What bothers me about the reviews for this is how fucking much they whine about Pratt waking up J-Law, as if the film portrays him as a hero for doing so. It doesn't, the whole point is that he made a selfish choice. I especially like the part where he's trying to justify himself by forcing her to listen to him over the PA thing and she screams that she doesn't care, because the fact is he was thinking only about himself.

But the critics have their heads up their asses and whine about "toxic masculinity" or some shit. I'm not saying the movie doesn't have flaws, but it's just like Iron Fist where they exaggerate the wrong flaws, out of... I don't know, political correctness? It's another case of them bombing the RT average for political reasons instead of giving the film a fair shake.
>>
The movie was kino up until Pratt shaved his beard
I'm just imagining how much better, or worse, the movie would've been with different leads
>>
>>81975129
>reading reviews
wtf is wrong with you?
>>
>>81975129
No, Pratt waking up J-Law was the right thing to complain about. This was like Marooned in Realtime in realtime. That is the exact thing that would be right to complain about. Toxic masculinity isn't real but anti-PC PC police are becoming a thing and it's saddening.
>>
>>81975192
Apparently they were considering Keanu Reeves and Emily Blunt at one point, which could have been neat.

>>81975241
I didn't want to, but when I was pulling up the page the other day I couldn't help but have it shoved in my face because apparently someone JUST made a video about "fixing" the movie and I was like "What the heck was even wrong with it?"
>>
>>81975311
>keanu reeves in anything that requires the character to show emotion
'no'
>>
>>81975408
Maybe the Keanu Reeves version could have been a horror movie.
>>
>>81975309
It was a central theme of the film that what he did was not morally right. How is that the right thing to complain about?

Better things to complain about were the fact that they resolved the matter by taking the plot in a "the ship is going to blow up and we gotta save it" direction, or the fact that they gave it a Hollywood ending where they lived happily ever after.
>>
>>81975901
I honestly don't understand third wave feminism at all but what Chris Pratt's character did to J-Law was wrong. That's all I wanted to say.
>>
>>81975970
Yes, it was wrong, but that's the POINT of the film. It's like criticizing The Shining for "Oh god he went on a murderous rampage, this is the problem with men!"
>>
>>81975970
it wouldve been fine if the robot wasnt retarded
>>
>>81976047
I feel like you're raping me right now. I just expressed an opinion and now you're bearing down on me with the intention of defeating me.

I get it, you're a male, this is how you interact with the world. But maybe you could just let others express their views without being so oppressive once in a while? Just a thought.
>>
>>81976114
Oh, sorry, I didn't realize you were shitposting.

>>
>>81976160
Next time it would be nice if you didn't have to resort to this ironic posting. For the first couple posts I thought you were actually interested in having a discussion with me.
>>
>>81975129
>the whole point is that he made a selfish choice.

Which the film tries to walk back by having Laurence Fishburne tell J-Law to basically "look at it from his point of view," and then having J-Law forgive Pratt so they could tack on a happy ending. At no time is Pratt ever really seen as the bad guy, he's always a good guy who made a mistake and the film expects you to at least understand his actions if not outright sympathize with him. It was a shit film and deserves all the criticism it received.
>>
Woulda been better if he died and 5 years of isolation drove her to do a similar thing to another passenger, show how crushing loneliness can drive anyone insane.

Instead she just embraces him in the end and says she really loves him, his ripping her from stasis and thus her life was reduced to a romcom mishap like making out with the heroine's mother by mistake or choosing the big job in the city instead of marrying right away.
>>
>>81976321
Morpheus described "his point of view" as that of a drowning man trying to take someone down with him. In no way does that justify it.
>>
>>81976379
>In no way does that justify it.

It certainly seemed to work for J-Law.
>>
>>81976283
I non-ironically disagree with use of the r-word, and also, your entire premise is still wrong even though I refuse to argue with you anymore. Good day.
>>
j law went full retard at the end by not going back into hibernation. she literally said what he did to her was murder and then didnt take the chance at respawning
>>
>>81976405
That is clearly not what convinced her to fall back in love with him. It was listening to the advice from her friend that caused her to reconsider her feelings.
>>

No, seriously, your first couple posts made you sound at least somewhat rational and then you became an r-word.

>>
>>81975129

SJWs who complain about movies don't actually watch them, they are just copying what their friends say on social media to fit in

for example everyone dogpiled on the angry video game nerd for saying he won't watch ghostbusters literally just because the name of his character makes people presume he must be sexist when he didn't mention gender at all and is just was tired of remakes of 80s movies, no one watched his 10 minutes video

and even if they watched the movie and saw that it was a conflicted issue, which they wont, it doesnt matter, like that thing with X-Men, also featuring JLAW, where Apocalypse chokes her, it is fucking obvious that if a villain called Apocalypse is choking someone trying to stop him from ending the world he is in the wrong, but SJWs will still say it promotes violence against women

theres no logic to any of it other than what the latest meme issue is on twitter
>>
>>81978089

>>81978289
Did not read one word of your post past "SJWs".

I really didn't!
>>
>>81978222
This honestly. The whole "it's impossible to be awake" thing ruins the suspension of disbelief. Any real ship like that would have SOME kind of backup.
>>
>>81978269
In fact, I take that back, he wouldn't even need to wake up a sleeping child. Apparently, in the original ending for the film it was revealed that the ship had the sperm/eggs/etc. of the passengers so he would have been able to make his own kids without needing to wake anyone up.
>>
>>81978298
Convenient things happen all the time in real life, I think it's perfectly realistic for them to happen in a fictional work.
>>
>>81978385

>>
>>81975129
Yeah, as if no one would react like the 2 characters do in the ship.

People don't realize how fucking long they stayed awake in that ship, despite making it clear it's several years, because its still a movie you get to think about their interaction within a very short time, while the characters actually go through months of boring leisure daily life.

And then there is all the period after the movie where they spend like I don't remember how many years living together, who knows what happened then.

>>
>>81978629

>>
>>81978452
Exactly, I find nothing wrong with that plot point because they made it clear that they got so overconfident from all the successful voyages that they were sure nothing could possibly go wrong and decided to cut corners on their ship. It's one of those situations where the company in charge got greedy and decided to save some money. Especially since if something did go wrong it would be very easy to just sweep it under the rug.
>>
this could be the shining in space, but no, they had to make the 2 hot moviestars to fell in love and save the day. the end was ridiculous

This. The movie would have been fine if it didn't try to have it's cake and eat it.

Either don't hand wave away what a terrible thing he did so you can have a happy ending, or make it so that she woke up by accident so you don't have to face that problem. You can't have it both ways.

It's weird because they made a point of referencing The Shining all over the place and everything.

I have to assume they stayed away from doing it because they were worried people would just complain it's a knockoff of The Shining. Instead they ended up bombarding it with negative reviews for a different reason.

Make it into a horror where he wakes up and goes insane from being isolated for so long.

He wakes people up and rapes them or tortures them and then the twist to the movie is that he figures out a way to go back to sleep after killing the majority of the people and then he wakes up with the other survivors pretending that nothing happened

I don't mind romantic movies, but I hate that it suddenly turned to that after being billed as a scifi space station thing
>>
>>81978730
Is it ever even posited as a cutting corners thing?

The ship basically had an omnipotent super computer running it that could self-repair and maintain everything the ship did

They just didn't account for something both getting through the shields and compromising that super computer. And even then, they ship compensated for the damage for what, two years before it reached a critical point?
>>
Movie had a misleading trailer where people would have liked it if it was just the movie the trailer pretended it was
>>
>>81979552
j law drowning in a water sphere for 90 minutes?
>>
>>81979523
I mean, yeah, the technology was advanced, but when the ship has a SINGLE medbay for 5000 people you have to assume they're trying to save money.
>>
>>81979042

>>
>>81979583

>>
>>81979487
>>81979552
I think that was the point. They wanted to trick people with the trailer which is why they didn't mention anything about him being the one to wake her up.

I would go so far as to say it was an experiment to find out how people would react to something like that. What we've learned is that people don't like being tricked.

But hey, the movie still made back its budget despite that, so it's all good. And Spaights has a pretty good reputation in Hollywood so it's not like one poorly received film is gonna kill him.
>>
>>81979592
they are only awake on the ship for like 6 months, right? dont need more than one medbay for that

>>81979833

>i would assume they were fine with having no actual failsafes

... why are you trying to make excuses for this movie?

>>81980407

>>
When you think about it, it's no surprise that this film was received the way it was. It was written ten years ago, before the era of political correctness, when people had different values.
>>

Here's an article about it.
>>
>>81980476
But there's nothing petty here. The movie's literally built around the idea the term "failsafe" means "can't fail," but nothing is ever done with that angle. So it just becomes an excuse to have the ship designed by retards.
>>
Oh yeah, this was probably the guy who thought "run in straight line away from large rolling object" was a good idea. That explains a bit.
>>
>>81981497
The movie isn't about the little minutiae of the ship. It's about "What would you do in this situation?" and I think people are ignoring a very interesting discussion because they're too focused on unimportant details.
>>
>>81981610
The problem is "this situation" is built upon compounding idiocy.

>>
>>81981991
The Enterprise has one sickbay and it's a flagship that spends years out on the frontier

People are only meant to be awake on the Avalon for like 2-3 months as it slows down for arrival. It's like saying a luxury hotel needs a dedicated hospital.

how the fuck did jlaw come back after drowning in the water bubble? she literally drowns, falls back into the pool face down in the water and dead, and then all of a sudden she just magically breaks the surface gasping for air. what the fuck? makes no goddamn sense.

so they just loaded the crew onto the ship, asleep? how were they going to be put back to sleep at the destination?
>>

That bring up an interesting point I was thinking about.

First of, I loved the film, thought both leads were great, and dont really get the bad reviews. But here is my thought.

This would have to have been taking place at least hundreds of years in the future. By that time the average lifespan would have to be at least 120. Meaning there would be plenty of people who lived much longer than that. Plus, they now had access to the medical tube thingy so any diseases or illnesses they got or surgery they needed could have been done easily. Also, gene therapy and other medical advancement would have to be a thing by then. I just think they could have both easily still been alive by the time they made it to the new planet.

Also, they should have had some kids.

If that was me on the ship, I would have just woken up the 10 most attractive women, made them all my slaves, knocked all of them up repeatedly and kill all the male offspring and keep fucking all the females so I had and endless supply of young pussy like that guy from Game of Thrones. When the ship reached the new planet everyone would wake up to like 75 inbreed, feral women who couldnt read.

>>
>>81983402
The film was open-ended about that. They didn't show any kids or whether they were still alive so you could speculate about it. All they showed was the overgrown tree. Anything could have happened.

>fail-safe
>defined as failing in a safe manner
>"uh failsafe that means it doesn't fail like it's safe from failing XDD"
>t. retarded kike writers
>"a quintillion safe trips with no failures means it's failsafe!"
>"failsafe" pod literally kills someone with systemic necrosis (first two were arguably operating in a failsafe manner)
A fail-safe in engineering is a design feature or practice that in the event of a specific type of failure, inherently responds in a way that will cause no or minimal harm to other equipment, the environment or to people.

A system's being "fail-safe" means not that failure is impossible or improbable, but rather that the system's design prevents or mitigates unsafe consequences of the system's failure. That is, if and when a "fail-safe" system "fails", it is "safe" or at least no less safe than when it was operating correctly

Here ya go, idiot. Cant believe I wasted my time doing this, but your stupidity had to be addressed.

http://www.nytimes.com/1991/08/27/style/27iht-eco_.html

>If the 1980s go down in American history as the "glitz decade," the 1990s are bound to be remembered as the years of "political correctness." Never before has a nation of hell-bent-on-pleasure-seekers made more of an effort to curb their consuming instincts. One must not overdo it. One must not offend. One must not make haste, not waste. Above all, one must be sensitive.

-NY Tmes Aug 27, 1991

I swear you fucking teenagers think the world didnt exist before you were born. Like all this shit going on is exclusive to you.
>>
>>81984591
Is the New York Times writing negatively about PC culture? Would that even be possible today?
>>
>>81984393

"The notion of political correctness has ignited controversy across the land. And although the movement arises from the laudable desire to sweep away the debris of racism and sexism and hatred, it replaces old prejudice with new ones. It declares certain topics off-limits, certain expression off-limits, even certain gestures off-limits."
-George H W Bush, 1991

It was the some "boo hoo stop being intolerant towards my intolerance" whining then, too.
>>
>>81984643
Its not a negative article, per se, just commenting that that is how the world is now (then).

Which is why its so annoying when the kiddies on here whine about PC shit like its a phenomenon from the past 10 years and in the 90s we went around lynching niggers and raping women.

The shit has been like this since the 80s. Yes its worse now, but its been around for awhile. Millennials are just so self absorbed that they can only view the world from their own perspective.
>>
>>81984753
Surely it's a lot more pervasive now than it was in the 90s
>>
I like this genre of movie where the setting is SciFi but it isn't in your face.

I didn't hate Passengers either, it was a good way to kill time.

Suggestions for the "genre" or style of film?

What way to call this type of movie? Hard SciFi or lowFi or what?

Only in the sense that Tumblrinas can now doxx people and try to get them fired/ruin their life. Those same idiots existed in the 90s but without the ability to form the sizable presence they can now because of the internet.

People were still stumbling all over themselves not to offend niggers and to not label muslims as terrorists.

I happened to stay home sick from school when the first World Trade center attack happened in Feb. '93. I cant vividly remember the news as it was happening.

>Now we here at channel 5 News what to make sure that its understood we are in no way associating this attack with Muslims........

>people complaining that there were no failsafes

Did you guys not watch the movie? The ship tried to reroute the problems but was not able to and systems slowly failed. THEY EVEN FIXED THE DAMN THING IN THE END!
>>
Just finished watching some of the bonus features and a few of them were fake "ads" for the ship. They had some fine print about how the Homestead Company is not liable for any personal or financial losses so I guess that means that even if Pratt was able to communicate with them somehow he wouldn't have been able to sue them or anything.
>>
I thought the movie was stupid romcom in space but basing on this thread I guess I gotta see it. The arguments against the movie don't come very strong (every single scifi movie ever suffers from inconsistent technology; this doesn't seem to have it so bad).

As a side note holy shit you actual shitposters must be bored.
>>

>I thought the movie was stupid romcom in space
It is.
All the "science" is a tiny macguffin for the romcom bullshit that is 95% of the flick.
>>
>>81987876
You'd be impressed at just how much thought went into stuff like the set design. I can't find the exact featurette I watched but here's one about it if you don't mind spoilers:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nCNz1sM1Vqk

All in all it's clear they worked really hard at it and are proud of what they accomplished so it's a shame critics basically boiled down all criticism of the film to "male privilege."
>>
>>81987992
There is nothing "comedic" about Passengers. If you're going to exaggerate that side of it, at least be honest and call it a romance.
>>
>>81988026
Only a fraction of the reviews are tumblr meme.

>>
>>81988103
I looked at a lot of reviews and they all mentioned how "rapey" and "gross" and "problematic" he was, just like all the Iron Fist reviews I looked at whined about cultural appropriation, mansplaining, etc.

I don't know how you can deny this.
>>
>>81988162

A lot of reviews call it those things because it absolutely is those things

Like this isn't some ambiguous thing, the movie acknowledges exactly what it is, then promptly walks it back and decides "eh, no big deal he's a nice guy at the end of the day"

The reviewers never take into account that if they were alone for an entire year they would probably wake up an attractive member of the opposite sex as well.

There is a reason why the UN consider solitary confinement a form of torture covered under article 5 of the UDHR now

I think he just charged his account for stuff like the restaurant and extra circular activities. Like how he sent the video message that costs thousands of dollars. Kind of like how people who are on cruises have their keycard hooked up to their credit card, but they get some stuff included (i.e. breakfast, lunch) as part of their package.

Obviously he is never going to have to pay for any of it.
