the best we can hope for is a story of a person uncovering the dark truth about a situation and the movie ending with the discovery of the cosmic horror. they might not even show anything, just allude to it, and with the power of filmcraft leave the audience in terror.

Me, too. I've always thought it would be one of the easiest Lovecraft stories to turn into a movie. It's story isn't that complicated; it's mostly just a mystery that follows ordinary people tracking down archaeological artifacts and looking into human cults. Plenty of other horror movies have pulled off similar plots, the only challenge would be making the end interesting.
