They tried to put a 'Romantic' character into a comedic film and it just hadn't been earned at that point. Everything that occurs with FN is continuous but everything Kylo does is abrupt. He simply didn't have enough scenes.

I love the early scenes where the character drops so many acidic bon mots. If he had a sort of Spanish-French aspect, like a Philip Mackie character, he would be great.

Unironically one of the most fleshed out villains in the whole SW universe, certainly the best executed character in the new trilogy.

Great casting, great performance (both vocal and body language wise), interesting character traits, great costume design everything.
Even his lightsaber serves as an extension of his character (crude, highly unstable, amateur build, but very powerful).
If he get's a proper motivational backstory and further character development in the next episode he will become one of the best executed characters in all of Star Wars.

It would make no sense for him to look "badass" in terms of his character, Rey even calls him a monster and Kylo takes his mask off to show that he's just as human and "normal" as she.

He wears the mask which is ultimately pointless and not functional, but he wears it just so he can be more like Vader and impose fear with his appearance, not wanting to present his young face.

That other anon already explained the point of his lightsaber, he made this lightsaber himself, it's not like there is a lightsaber factory where you just go and buy a lightsaber for you, he built it himself probably with some scrap parts.
His lightsaber has a cracked crystal inside of the hilt that is so powerful it can't go in one beam so he made 2 vents to function properly. It's not like he made it that way because it's superior.

I think he will stop being a wannabe Vader in TLJ and that's that shot of the destroyed mask in the teaser, Kylo dismissing the Vader image alltogether (maybe because he finds out the true last moments of Vader?).

Rey tells him that he's a monster.
He takes off his mask to show her that he's just as a normal looking human being like her, not an evil disfigured monster.

It would make no sense in terms of his character to remove the mask and behind it to be a 10/10 badass evil turbochad villain. Why would he even hide behind it all then except for the Vader circlejerk?

I actually think he has even more Dark Side potential than Vader.
Vader felt the pull of the light and saved Luke at the end because of it, where Kylo straight up murdered his own father while feeling the same pull.

I doubt he will be anywhere near as powerful as prime Vader, but I'm pretty sure he's cemented in the Dark Side with no chance of redemption.

Just before he kills his father there is a blatant on the nose symbolism shot of light dissapearing with the prevailing total darkness. It was heavily implied that there is no "light" in him anymore.

most movies need a good villain. making Kylo into Elliot Rodgers or whatever is kind of a neat idea but if he is the main villain in the movie, it is an incredibly shitty idea.
we've seen Kylo with his mask off. we've seen the main character get the best of him in both an interrogation and a light saber duel with no training. none of the other members of the first order got enough screen time to make us feel like they share the title of "main villain" with Kylo. so why the fuck would I want to go watch Episode 8 just to watch Rey kick Kylo's ass again? I have no reason to believe that anything different is going to happen in that movie.
just spitballing here, but here are some things they could've done to make the villain situation less disappointing in this shitty movie.
> give Phasma or another high-ranking First Order member more screen time and character development. a proper fight between one of them and the good guys would help a lot
> leave Kylo's mask on for the entire movie. or maybe only remove it once in a new scene at the very end of the movie that shows his new scar
>don't let Rey make Kylo her bitch. there was no reason she needed to get the best of him in the interrogation. in the light saber duel, he could've gotten the best of her, and then her friends save her at the last second before he can deliver a killing blow

it was somewhat unexpected and mostly up til that point the movie, kylo was a rather intimidating character. unfortunately for Adam Driver, his face doesn't fall into the intimidating side for most people. So a dichotomy of his character and his look was created and the way people reacted to that was laughing.
