Amour is a clearly a combination of both films. The use of Riva, who was so youthful in Hiroshima makes the film much more devastating, the play on the title of the film as well. The obvious similarities to Haneke's previous film, the use of Schubert, the main characters being piano teachers, the dynamic of dominance and submission, a woman who craves death, and a climax of a man climbing on top of the woman and destroying her life, emotionally in the Piano Teacher, but literally in Amour.

It literally does not work unless you've seen both other films, it's far, far better than either.
>>
>>81942552

Good guess, it's The Human Condition. Probably the best japanese war movie made.
>>
>>81942531
i love Innocence, Evolution was nice but it couldn't compare with the atmosphere Innocence creates, the way water is used in the film, all it's so amazing, so dreamy, all of the shots worked
some will say it's a film only for women or whatever, but it's so thematically rich and it's so well made that I still loved it a lot, even if it gets memed a lot here
I could talk about it forever.
sorry for the autistic rant

evolution was ez modeo imo
water is such an ez thing to use in film, it's basically cheating which is y i didnt like evolution that much compared to l'ecole which was a fucking fantastic debut
her other films are dead tho altho nectar was pretty interesting
>>
>>81942734
>The use of Riva, who was so youthful in Hiroshima makes the film much more devastating
while I understand your point, since the same was done with Jean Pierre Leaud in Death of Louis XIV, and it's certainly very interesting how he chose that actress to represent decay, however, this, or all the other aspects of the film you mentioned in your post, make it "far better" than Mon Amour, a film with a Duras script, so the dialogue is perfect and works in an incredible way with Resnais' use of memory and antithesis in his films, all in a very subtle use of filmmaking.
Hiroshima Mon Amour changed film forever I'd say, so I just don't see it as a film that allowed Haneke's amour to be a thing.

I don't agree at all with you, I think Resnais is a much more intelligent filmmaker than Haneke, and his films are more complex (both visually and thematically) than steady cam social political drama (I like Haneke, though).

Hiroshima Mon Amour plays with linearity and flashbacks in such a unique way too, with recollections of memories that the viewer (achieved through her narration) and the main character (She doesn't know Hiroshima) may have never even lived through. Playing also with Nietzschean perspectivism and digging into a Borgesian "fake memory" territory.

It's a three way win, in image, dialogue, and themes.

I could give you the point that it's better than The Piano Teacher, but I haven't seen it in a while so...

>>81943045
when i was talking about water, i meant how it was used in Innocence, not Evolution, with the girl drowning, and the girl sailing way on the decaying row boat

>Can't recognize any.

Seems like top middle is The Rainbow or something. Can't tell if you intentionally choose bad screens or not.

Oh. And I think left middle is The Pianist?

Noice.

Middle left is Place Between the Pines right? Pretty good movie.

Hi

I wasn't fond of Amour, but your post makes me want to watch The piano teacher and then rewatch it.

I think it was very nice, esp sound wise, the sounds effects were nice and the use of music was really great.
What did you think of it ?
>>
>>81956386
feel pretty mixed about it, I agree it sounded great in the theater, also liked the first shot where we see the girl jump to the street, then the car, then an empty road again, that was nice, I think that shot was great at trying to establish that little lost in space/time road, for only a few seconds, idk why but I really liked the intro.
It had some nice shots, like using mirrors to have two people in the same shot, this is only used once or twice if I remember correctly, but the rest I didn't think was particularly visually striking.
Some of it reminded me of the Neon Demon, which I despised a lot, but Raw was less symmetrical and the music worked better I guess, but that being said I still don't think it worked.
Idk, maybe a film about a girl's sexual awakening told through cannibalism just isn't for me.

Yeah it reminded me of The Neon Demon (and Suspiria), but mostly on a stylistic level, since the content is very different. The shot in the hallway where the lights turn red just before the paint scene looked very much like those two movies.
I think that you can really tell that this was directed by a woman, and that was a positive point because it's not very common. I'm thinking particulary about the epilation scene, or placement of the camera between the legs of the protag, but I understand if people can find that offputting.
Regarding the intro, I also liked the wide shots in the parking, it worked nicely for the atmosphere too.

What's top mid?

I finished Welles and started Tarkovsky. Solaris was also very good, it'll probably make the next rotation of recent faves. Thanks again to the anon that gave me At the First Breath of Wind, it was surprisingly different from Piavoli's others but still wonderful
>>81943776
For some reason I really didn't care for The Third Man. Synechdoche was extremely fascinating though.
>>81952334
The Seventh Seal, The Thin Red Line, and Lost Highway were all on mine at some point, very nice
>>81952937
Nice picks, I especially love seeing Knight of Cups. May I ask why Mulholland Drive though? It felt, in comparison the Lynch's otherfilms, very watered down and inconsequential

What was your favorite? and why is Ambersons the best?

glad you liked Al primo sofflo di vento, probably one of the best films from this century

Have you seen the other recent refn ? I found The Neon Demon to be weaker than OGF stylistically, and most people seem to prefer Drive so I'm curious to what shaped your preference over those two.
