Good god, is this from the 3rd movie? I just couldn't stand their design choices and changes to the plot in the first two.
They actually cut out or changed all of my favorite scenes. Like the scene where they first encouter that shapeshifter (whatever his name was again) or even worse, the fucking dragon kill scene.
I still cringe at the scene with the stone giants. I also hope the guy that suggested to make Esgaroth built of solid stone, suffers a slow and painful death.

I saw the making of documentary about the original trilogy, they put a lot of work into their miniatures.
All of the important sets, including mordor, were handcrafted. I wish filmmakers nowadays would put as much effort into their sets, instead of succumbing to cheap and shitty CGI.

The Hobbit movies had 6 months of preproduction compared to the Lord of the Rings movies' 4 years. It was never going to be as good, and frankly it's a miracle that the first movie was even decent.

I hate the second and third movies because there's a lot of cool stuff in them and some very good scenes but it's all mired in CGI vomit.

The "Battle" is the biggest problem. It's not a battle scene. It's greenscreened actors waving plastic sticks in front of them while the occasional footage of CGI constructs gives the illusion that a battle is happening around them.

I did the math. "battle" footage, that is, soldiers fighting, formations lining up, charges, stuff like that, but not counting anything involving the main characters directly, accounts for about 1 minute and 50 seconds. Compare that to The Two Towers, where the "battle footage" of Helms Deep adds up to about 15 minutes.
