Favorite Parks and Rec character? Pic related.
>>
I love Jamm. Everything about him is seedy and gross, including his name and the fact that it's spelled with an extra M (I don't know why that makes it worse, it just does).

I started rewatching this a couple of days back and I forgot how good it was. Leslie Knope is very funny too, I thought she would just be annoying but I was wrong, she had some funny moments.

Don't know who my favourite character is though, they're all very funny. Although I like Chris Traeger's ridiculous personality.
>>
i watched pickle and morty and thought that was the most reddit show on the planet. then i watched parks. dear lord is this really what america finds funny?
>>
>>81931476
Did they fit Jon Glaser with a wig for that look?

His natural hair is the Jewiest Jewfro.

I'm Perd Hapley of channel 6 news. The newest story is that it's not a story, it is in fact a sentence, that /you/ are reading in /my/ voice.

>when she puts the words "kick" and "ass" on 2 hardhats and Rashida quickly picks kick so Amy is walking around with a hardhat that has the word ass on it
>>
i like p&e because it's a show about someone that works hard and gets results from it
i can't think of many modern shows like that, they're always drenched in self deprecation these days
>>
>>81932098
You can be a synical cunt and be edgy on /tv/ all you want, but Parcs and Rec is one of the few shows that allow me laugh out loud by myself and feel some actual joy in my shitty 1 bedroom appartement when I'm not working my shitty job. Not everything has to be edgy and depressing asshole
>>
>>81932062
They made her funny and likeable even thought her character is well read and somewhat intelligent. It was a nice change after someone like Michael Scott in the Office.

Ron Swanson, as meme-tier as he was.
Guy had some superb quotes.

Funny thing is, I learned about Parks and Rec from a university classmate who kept telling me I reminded him of Ron.

The way that guy cut it off before he was done falling made it so much funnier. I can't remember if that's how it was on the show though.

The best scene in the entire shows was Knope's poorly-organized walk across the hokey arena for her election speech.

After I was done watching Parks and Rec, someone on /tv/ recommended me to check out 30 Rock, saying it's like Parks and Rec, but funny. What do you guys think of 30 Rock?

Admittedly, it's not a bad show, but I enjoyed Parks and Rec way more.

Also, Venezuelan visit was the best episode.
>>
>>81933350
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vz68mPMRGmg

>>81933532
30 rock is good I think but I have to admit that I haven't watched it much, just sometimes when it was on tv. I feel like it's a little more serious, where parks and rec is pretty much just 100% comedy.
>>
>>81933350
Why not? More actors should get that sort of opportunity. My money is currently on Ben Foster.
>>
>>81933532
30 Rock was pretty good but I think it went to shit pretty quickly. Parks and Rec is more consistent.
>>
>>81933602

Just before he got on Parks and Rec he was considering leaving acting, so you can tell it was somewhat tough for him to break in.

Some of the shit he dealt with would crush other people, some comment he made about people staring right through him could easily be felt by others on this site.
>>
>>81933618
I think 30 Rock remained average all the way through. No severe drops in quality or anything.
Parks and Rec was all-around better, but could have done without the last season, desu.
>>
>>81933532
Alec Baldwin acting as every member of black household was hilarious.
The show made me grow a weird obsession with Tina Fey, even though I didn’t watch the while thing. i even read her book.

I agree but who he should really be thanking is aubrey. Her character getting paired with him made him likable to men and women. Any time parks and rec gets raised, it's literally everywhere, even now. Infact show is probably more popular now than when it aired.
>>
>>81934377
I'm impressed you admitted that.

Are you new, per chance?
>>
>>81934390
Women sort of have that effect to push guys forward. I am sure he is fully aware of it.
>>
I'm surprised that /tv/ likes P&R to be honest. It always had a lot of charm, just a good, honest comedy without a lot of pretense.

>>81932490
>>81932594

I agree that Ann was the weakest character, although I also hated Craig from towards the end.

I liked Ben a lot, particularly his moments with the accounting firm and Barney. I liked Jerry/Gerry a lot too.

Lots of the smaller recurring characters (animal control, Jamm, Ron's wives etc.) probably made the best standout scenes.
>>
>>81934464
No, been here from ’15. Just a middle child. I learned that by admitting my mistakes and saying I am wrong from time can be quite good.

I didn't actually was P&R till show was almost over and was watching one of the panels about the show and found out she adlibbed that line about liking/him and his band at end of season 1 and writers decided to use it to see if they had chemistry.

Some random act on her part.

>>81935207

from comments pratt has made, she tends to be 'on' around media and quote she often uses is brando one about actors should never be boring, so stuff like that suggests she is always 'on' around cameras, giving a performance of some kind, so its on purpose and most likely not her real personality.

I've watched literally all of her late night interviews, and she never breaks character. She is genuinely that awkward and weird. Even one of her earlier interview with Jay Leno, she said in one interview because its that she just gets really nervous, and she likes to lie as a way to be funny.

Theres another P&R interview with one of the producers, casting had been filled up. There was no April. And he gets a phone call from his assistant, "hey, you have to put his girl on the show. she is the weirdest girl i've ever met"

Ron doesn't reach for much, tho. He's very contempt with having the bare essentials, and does not give much of a fuck about other people. I can respect that, but I can't admire that.

I don't understand this show. First of all S1,6 and 7 are flat out not good. that is half the show's run that is noticeably worse than the other half. I'm not going to defend this opinion I think its quite evident to anyone with a modicum of taste.

S2,3,4,5 are decent enough. But even then they aren't something incredible. You still have to deal with aubrey plaza's abysmally unfunny character the whole show. the jerry jokes that stopped being funny after the 3rd one, and Aziz occasionally says something funny 99% of the time you just have to listen to a voice that sounds genetically engineered to be as annoying as fucking possible to human ears.
>>
>>81935649

Ron helped April and Andy, helped leslie by giving her a job.

Ron reaches by helping people reach their potential without trying to interfere overly much. Its the libertarian in him.

He does what Jack does, just more parsimoniously.

I disagree. Parks tried to have more heartfelt bits, while 30 rock, regardless of how serious a subject might be, is still just characters saying hilarious things one line after the other. It also doesn't have the mockumentary format, I was tried of it by the time parks and rec aired. Not a bad thing, just my taste.

I liked Parks and Rec but it went downhill when it forgot that Leslie would really be an annoying person to be around.

In the first few seasons she annoys the people around her - sure, she's still nice and friendly and a genuinely good person, but she's also flawed, she's pushy and unsympathetic and expects other people to live up to impossible standards. She wasn't annoying to the audience, but she was annoying to the other characters.

But as it went on she became the writers' collective waifu and became obnoxiously perfect. Everything bad was bad because it opposed her, everything good was good because it supported her. Dare I use the M-word?

It also got too fucking political. Even when I agreed with it, like in the episode about sex ed, it was still prachy and unfunny. I get it, abstinence-only education is retarded, move the fuck on already because telling me this through boring, transparent strawmen isn't fucking funny. Other episodes like pie-mary and soda tax were equally cringeworthy strawmen political sermons that dragged the show down.

It also ruined the characters of some of the others. Tom went from a sleazy middle-manager to a drooling fucking retard who for several seasons couldn't do anything but yell "Swagger! XD". Donna was always an unlikeable alpha bitch. Ron went from a libertarian man's man to literally, LITERALLY, giving Leslie a speech about how government is a thankless job but they have to do what's best for citizens even when they're not wanted to. Ann, eh, she was always boring. At least they couldn't ruin Chris Pratt. He's just so loveable.

I'm sorry, but you're just wrong

The best scene in the show is this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LinpRhB4aWU
>>
>>81937313

The beginning of the seventh season is how she fucked up with Ron. So maybe they realized your complaint?

I think even the most preachy episodes usually had some counter tid bit in them to show other sides.

Tom needed to go somewhere character-wise, and i'm not sure where you got drooling retard part, he was trying different business ventures the entire series, I think what you mean is he became a hyper-caricature of his former character at times which could be obnoxious, kind of jean ralph guy. and jenny slates character.. they were obnoxious on purpose and I remember Boston legal doing something similar where David kelly would throw characters with ticks on screen because of how funny it was to watch even though it also got obnoxious.

Ann is the straight man in series so she is going to be the most staid.

The more in shape pratt got, harder it was for them to make fun of which was best part about the show. In later seasons they wanted to take his shirt off and show him doing more prattfall like stuff but forgot he looked like a superhero.
>>
>>81937313
well its a show about small government, some politics are going to be essential to the theme. It is pretty slanted though, if you can ignore that and watch it for character interaction then its fine, but they really try on some of those episodes.
Leslie's character definitely goes off the rails, but at least its a tangible story arc. It has much more replay value than the Jim & Pam saga.

The show still has like 4 solid seasons IMO, the 6th gets pretty cringey but at least they knew to wrap it the fuck up.
>>
>>81933532
30 Rock has much of the same sense of humor as P&R. It has that same offbeat, takes-mundane-things-seriously humor. However, 30 Rock is synical in tone, while P&R got less and less cynical as time went on and it shed its The Office-clone themes after season two.
>>
>>81935427
Her actress plays Leslie in the porn parody version.

So she is literally, LITERALLY, the porn star version of Leslie Knope.

>>
>>81937606
I do try to tune it out, but they're just so obnoxious and aggressively in your face about it it gets difficult to tune out, even when I agree with them. Like I said, the sex ed episode was basically a 20 minute attack on abstinence-only education. It's one I totally agree with, but that's hardly humorous. It and the other "time for a special politics message!" episodes were so filled with obvious strawmen I couldn't hear any jokes over the writers circlejerking about how correct and progressive they are.

And even outside of those episodes, it comes up. I'd be fine with the government having to face issues, like for instance the budget crisis in seasons 2-3, as that's part of the setting. But just as one example that sticks out in my mind, the two-parter where Ben and Leslie get married. Ben suddenly stops in mid-scene to mock the idea of wives taking their husband's last names, then both of them laugh the idea off and proceed. It's not that it's an issue that personally affects me or anything, it just annoyed me. It feels like a fuck you to anyone who dares actually care about the characters. No, hold on, we want to mock a pretty standard and widespread practice because we dislike it, instead.
>>
>>81938252

and yet april is forced into having kids because andy wants them.

wouldn't the progressive thing side with april not wanting to have kids? (even though the actress wanted april to have kids sooner ironically.)
>>
>>81938482
He didn;'t force her to do shit, she ultimately wanted them after deciding having kids would be cool instead of lame.
>>
>>81938252
Yea I can pretty much agree with that, especially
>I couldn't hear any jokes over the writers circlejerking about how correct and progressive they are.

However I feel its hard to find character-driven comedy like this that isnt specifically "liberal and progressive" by identity. It's unfortunate that the writers take themselves so seriously though, it sticks out like a sore thumb.
It's almost as bad as the forced friendship/relationship memes that overrun both this show and the office towards their later seasons.
>>
>>81938552

She literally said it would be disgusting to have kids in that same episode. His wanting them was the literal impetus to her having kids. You can't have the one without the other.
>>
>>81938252
Or that time Michelle Obama showed up and randomly plugged her school youth exercise program.

30 rock is one of the funniest shows to ever air. Easily top 3 along with Seinfeld and Arrested Development. You will not regret watching it.

30 rock is nice because character development and story arcs are not the central focus, and sometimes absent entirely, though completely on purpose to drive the comedy.

Parks and Rec and The Office try to hit on all sorts of personal themes in life, relationships and the workplace while 30 Rock is just pure comedy.

In that scene early in the show where he shows up to Ann's house naked and Leslie answers the door - he surprised Amy Poehler by actually being nude on the set. >>
Man, I'm really surprised that /tv/ likes P&R. It's basically a liberal show that comes off as very Tumblr. Not that I'm complaining.
>>
>>81935207
Not quite as weird as April, but yeah, she's genuinely an awkward person. That was always the impression I got from her interviews, that she just plays an exaggerated version of herself on P&R, and before someone says it, no, she isn't playing the character in interviews. I listened to a podcast interview of her where she explicitly says that.
>>
>>81935437
It wasn't a bad season, but I agree that it was completely unnecessary. The season 6 closer was a perfect ending. If they really wanted to do a new season, it should purely have been a brief epilogue that wrapped up all the characters, rather than introducing a bunch of completely new sideplots like they did.
The finale was still kino, though.
>>
>>81937606
>well its a show about small government
Eh, not really. Leslie was the advocate for big government, Ron was the advocate for small, and 80-90% of the times that they came into conflict over that, Leslie ended up being right.
>>
>>81940954
The finale was too saccharine in my opinion. It was just really sugary and sappy.

she has a long pedigree in improv comedy, her interviews are literally just more performance art. You can tell because the guys with comedy backgrounds play along with it and its not only less awkward but tends to work out better.

she runs up on stage to steal will ferrells trophy and he doesn't play along but gets kicked out of mtv awards.

her entire shtick is always being 'on' and several people around her have said the same shit.

now watch this https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/aubrey-plaza-told-desus-and-mero-she-still-texts-her-parks-and-rec-senpai

she's capable of acting normal and not playing along, essentially when she is shilling her boyfriends movies.

it's all a game anon and all she believes in is being entertaining.

when I find one of the multiple repeated/retweeted posts talking about actors always needing to be entertaining and never boring, i'll post it to this but idea is the same.

It's all in her training and her 'schtick' has literally given her a career.

There's a very clear difference between the character of April and who Aubrey is in real life. She's incredibly accomplished. Her shtick, even in the real world, is somewhat similar to April. But that's not who she is. She's very intelligent and she cares about people a lot. If you get a chance to see the real her, consider yourself lucky, because that means she likes you. >but mostly just people who want to discuss film and tv without all the shitposting

This sums it up. There are a few people from my town that like exploring their own interests in movies, series, music and literature in general. They sort of watch whatever somebody else recommends them so I go on /tv/ to see some news and read something somewhat interesting because I clearly cant do it when everybody around me is watching football or going to the gym.

You must be tired taking all those screenshots and croping.
I read she also practiced hindusim. Does that also fall into the category of DROPPED?.

I didn't mind Mark at all

take the advice from Ron from the show

>"awards are pointless"
>>

At least it was done with some class. Unlike BAZINGA or something like that.

That's not Mark

Tom had some great material
>food rakes scene
>DJ Roomba playing "i'm on the floor, floor"
>plant the seed, harvest like 30 minutes later
>Fart attack
>>
>>81954263

he got screwed being sandwiched between pratt charm and rob lowe. That would make anyone seem dull.
>>
>>81954315
>NO DJ ROOMBA
>you killed him
>he was like a son to me
>>
>>81954315

Snake juice is still one of my favorites.
>>
>>81942522
I didnt mind Tom too much. I really hated the way he said "puppy".

His relationship with Anne was also totally unimportant and meaningless.

I love that scene from Season 2 when the accounting guy is giving his presentation at Leslie's party and Andy loses his shit at the 'no accounting for taste' joke.

you forgot:

I did notice they get drunk a LOT in this show.

>gets caught cause he rocks up at his own funeral

>>
>>81954528
Now that you mention it, they probably have an entire episode every season based on being drunk
>april drinking wine in the office
>leslie being drunk in the interview
>snake juice episode
>the halloween one where they drink and try to get tattoos
>the one with rons mom and the moonshine
>>
>>81940827
It's liberal as hell, but still very funny and the smartest, most successful character on the show is staunchly anti-government, so it's almost a wash.
>>
>>81940827
>>81952494
Until you hit the later seasons where five good jokes an episode are scattered among issue-of-the-week saccharine plotlines that wrap up the same way every single time (guess what Leslie, we won!).
>>
>>81942980
>>81943024
Massive respect to whoever saw that guy was a black hole and booted him off after 1 season
>>
>>81954906
I always thought he just left the show. It really seemed the character and the actor didn't want to be there.

>Right.
If I'm always working on my career or pursuing jobs in acting, what am I going to act about? Don't I need to chew on other stuff to shit out something good? I just need different stimulus.

>Is that why you left 'Parks and Recreation'?
That experience was very strange for me. You know, I signed up for a specific character that was changed in mid-season. And it became a character with a lot less to do. And, all of a sudden, I was kind of confused and kind of having a lot less to do.

>I'm not sure the show knew what it wanted to be when it first started.
And what show does? Those guys are working on something that I have no idea how to captain that ship. And I was very happy for the experience to be involved and those guys really figured out what it is they're doing. I mean, decidedly -- they have fucking the First Lady in the show. Now, the difference for me is, I don't have cable TV. I watch 'America's Funniest Home Videos' and I watch 'Frontline.'

>When you first left, Mike Schur mentioned that you might come back now and then. I get the impression that's not going to happen.
No, I'm not interested in going back. And that's very generous of him. But I've never been contacted about that nor have I any interest in going back.

So he hated it

>that scene where andy breaks the lights, makes a break for it and breaks a monitor doing it
>>
not sure why people complain about mark

the format of this type of "comedy" is that you make the retards act like retards and then bounce it off a normal character who is "surprised"
he acted performed what was written for him
>>
>>81955191

I just looked at his career post-rec and while everyone else's profile got raised, some significantly, he disappeared into middle billing and foreign films.

wow that has to hurt.
>>
>>81955331
That's something Adam Scott did better.
>>
>>81955362
I remember at the time the PR on him leaving was because he had some semblance of an indie film career at the time, and being on the show was preventing him from doing more movies. Clearly that was bullshit since he never showed up in anything else
>>
>>81955462
thats because after a while the writers realised they need to make him funny if the viewers are expected to put up with him every episode

mark didnt get "cones of dunshire" and whatever just "ok I am drawing plans at my table, oh hi leslie"
>>
>>81954891
sure anything about Andy being in London or Leslie meeting Joe Biden stinks, but those middle seasons though
>>
>>81955514

They did do a sort of rebalance on the show after season 1 and they did give him a chance in season 2 and a lot of the time he was on there got ate by people like pratt/aubrey who moved from the 'c' story to 'b' one. Character heirarchy got reshuffled during mid-season 2 and he largely disappeared.
>>
>>81955518
It's like how Ann was dull and boring until the episode where she goes on a date with Leslie and was finally allowed to be funny. They never let Mark have something like that
>>
>>81932154
Perd is easily one of the best side characters, along with Harris
>>
>>81955759

Joan was probably one of my favorite sidecharacters just because of her interactions with ron and april
>>
>>81955514
>>81955362
he doesn't live in LA anymore, I think he's more interested in being a writer/filmmaker not an actor. He was generally involved in independentish films before he was on Parks and has a weird Australian connection I think through The Assassination of Jesse James director. I just mean I don't think his end goal in Hollywood was similar to Pratt or Poehlers.

>>81955331
he played a good straight man. I honestly think the writers just hadn't figured his character out when he was on the show. Season one was panned when it came out.
>>
>>81955759

I do know I want pratt and aubrey to get on another show together, podcast they did together for pratt's wife left me in tears.

>heaven cafeteria
>rubbing dicks together

and that conversation started with pratt wanting to burn to death so he'd get a seat at cool kids table.
