Neat beginning, middle, and end. Sense of continuity and pacing that doesn't slog like LotR. Conclusion neatly tied together at the end, though predictable. Brilliant action sequences and smartly comical cultural references to both high and low culture sources.

Wasn't it just a single movie that got cut into two for American theater? And while they are pretty good, production-wise, it just got boring to me halfway into the second half. Just seem to drag on, with no point really being made, so I jumped out somewhere around the time she abandons her family on Christmas to beg for dick she never got. Did it ever go anywhere beyond the whore telling her lifestory to that autistic virgin?

I was hoping they would continue with the HHGTTG series, but considering how uneven the one film was, perhaps just as well.

I really hope War of the Planet of the Apes turns out to be good, I thoroughly enjoyed both Dawn & Rise.

Not really. It was an amplification of the flaws present in the LOTR trilogy, increased by Jackson's creative burnout, lack of time to produce the movies, and the terrible extension of a tiny book into an unusually long trilogy.

Some of it is color correction meddling but a lot of time the master prints are just degraded. Film stock was never meant to last like that, the new colors might be the result of some restoration instead of just fuckery too.
