So let me see If I understood, The Emojibots became sentient and built the city for themselves? So the Doctor pretty much wiped past events from the minds whilst jeeping their sentient status therefore achieving cooperation with the humans?

Great music reminded me of sci of 80's movies and Mass Effect. Overall good episode. I think it would have been better without the survivors they dragged it down a bit.

Enjoyed that episode more than I thought I would, despite the whole "Wiping their memory so live together" ending, first half was a nice flesh out for Bill and The Doctor and how they'll interact, already prefer Bill to most companions desu.

Also, I am liking the Hartnell feel to these episodes, the end leading into the next is a nice touch though I bet Briggs is shitting it for Big Finish shoe ins.
>>
>>81922220
Once again an ep with a good concept was ruined by "le human colonists are ignorant" cliche yet again. The episode was so good until the little boy turned up then I knew it was about to take a U-turn. And what was with the wacky camerawork? When 12 said "he fancied me" why did the camera linger on him for like 10 seconds? I thought doctor who had one of the biggest BBC budgets, couldn't they afford a decent editor?

Nah that's a load of shite. Regency era London exists at the end of the era when the city had a population of 'black poor' which went into decline after slavery was fully abolished between 1808 and 1833 as they all began to emigrate to places like Sierra Leone. During the 18th century, Lord Mansfield had declared that a slave who fled from his master could not be taken by force in England, nor sold abroad. Up in Mile End, Stepney, Paddington, and St Giles, there were populations of blacks living amongst whites, The majority of these people did not live as slaves, but as servants to wealthy whites. Many became labelled as the "black poor," defined as former low-wage soldiers, seafarers and plantation workers.
There were bunches of black campaign groups in London at the time as well, like the Committee for the Relief of the Black Poor, and the Sons of Africa.

Still, the population was relatively small when compared to South Asians and East Indians (lascars) who were also sometimes referred to as 'black', leading to confusion.

Famous black people in Britain during this time include Pablo Fanque, Olaudah Equiano, Ottobah Cugoano and Joanna Vassa.

Enjoy the episode quite a bit, but the third act felt a tad schlocky and it was a bit distracting. Visuals, music and acting from Capaldi and Macke were really good though. They should definitely bring the direct back for Season 11.

This is a reference to one of the most famous novels of the 19th century, the first "failed utopia" novel. It's called Erewhon because "Utopia" means "nowhere", and because Samuel Butler can't spell backwards.

What kind of cuckshit was this episode?

So the humans have to abide by the robots, serve under the robot's rule, continue to smile for the robots, robots who by the way would still be confused by human emotions, pay to live there, and the previously sentient robots get away with murder?

Why the fuck can't the humans reprogram them exactly?

>>81929195
I'm sure people spelled it that way, and every other way you could spell things, back in 1500 or so, but all literate people in 1872 spelled it the same way we do.

The reason Butler gave was for pronunciation. If you read it backward and sound out each letter phonetically, it sounds like (upper class) rural Midlands English of the time, not like (upper class) urban London English, because they pronounced "wh" with a strong "h" sound before the "w".

But I always figured he just screwed up, and it was way too expensive to pulp and reprint a run back then, so he just made up a reason it was intentional. :)
>>
>>81929389
I was joking but then on second thoughts.

He seems to be a loose end and nobody has served the BBC more royley (haha) than being in one of its best loved shows and then doing 10 YEARS of Two Pints of Lager And A Packet Of Crisps (which wasn't one of its best loved shows but worth watching for Sheridan in chav-slag mode if you go in for such things).

He's done a fair bit of kid's TV, some theatre, a "BBC man" through and through...fits the profile better than most suggestions.

A cheeky fiver ahead of the rush?
>>
>>81929389
He made a series trailer?

>>81929095
I'm kind of surprised Doctor Who didn't reference Nehwon before Erewhon.

I know at least Gatiss is a Fritz Leiber fan.

The intro to the first Swords collection, with the whole bit about beyond the gulfs of time and the stranger dimensions of dreams, that's perfect Doctor Who.

And the whole point of the name, besides the Samuel Butler reference, is that his fantasy world isn't just cod-medieval or cod-Roman or cod-Viking or whatever, it mixes and matches from all different periods of Earth history, which is basically every dream Moffat has ever had.

Speaking of the ship's name. Why does it seem like it was purposely hidden?
The camera never panned down far enough to so the name on the door when The Doctor and Bill first entered. There was rust conveniently covering it on the map. In fact the only time it was ever shown was when the robots unlocked the door.
That seems like a lot of effort to try and hide a reference that most people wouldn't get.

Pretty good episode, but not great.

I can see why people made Tom-era comparisons, but unfortunately, one of the reasons is that the ending kind of let the rest of the story down in the same way as so many later Tom-era ones.

Still, it looked beautiful, the pacing (up until the ending) was relaxed without being slow, the interaction between Bill and 12 was great, the story (up until the ending) was solid, and all of the references were subtle instead of sledgehammery. 7.5/10.

And this isn't one of the episodes I was looking forward to. If this is as bad as it gets, it's going to be a great series.

It's not even remotely recycling THP. It just borrows one idea from that story. It also borrows ideas from The Ark in Space, The Chase, the Samuel Butler novel Erewhon, and a dozen other sources. There's no evil Thatcher analogue, no rebellious gay-rights analogues who demand the right to be glum, no satirically camp costuming, etc.

Saying this recycles THP is like saying The Aztecs recycles Marco Polo because "le going back in time to a famous historical period".
>>
>>81930085
Not saying there weren't black people around back then but even in this century the percentage of black people you see outside of the major cities is very low.

It's just with the Beeb, and especially on Doctor Who, you'd think there were as many black people as there were white people when there wasn't and still isn't. And the high percentage black areas of the country are usually shitholes that have barely any white people (basically south east london).

It's not even a race thing to be pissed off about it's just historical inaccuracy. Yes there are black people about but they're way over-represented. Not saying it's a problem because they're black, just that it's inaccurate. It's like seeing vikings being portrayed with horns on their helmets. They didn't. And it pisses me off when i see it.

Oh yeah and gas the kikes race war now.

The BBC is terrible at diversity, when it does 'diversity' it means black people from the same handful London postcodes.

Its effectively more homogeneous than a Bullingdon Club charabanc outing.

Its easier to understand the BBC in terms of it being more focused on London than it is on race.

>outside of the major cities
But that's just the point. The episode is set right in the middle of London, not "outside of the major cities". In other words, exactly where all the freed slaves were living in that era.

And it's also right in the era when the number of black people was at the highest (until maybe the modern day). By the turn of the century, it had been firmly legally established that any slave who could get to England would be freed, but it wasn't yet legally clear until 1821 that they would remain free if they emigrated to the colonies.

And people at the time even wrote about how surprised they were by how many black people were out at the frost fairs. Because most of them were spontaneous, unplanned events, they ended up with every stratrum of society mixing with the others.

Although most people at the time didn't distinguish between black, north African/middle Eastern, and Indian, and many of them would have been surprised by just seeing more than a handful, so it's hard to tell from that how prevalent they were, I'm willing to bet that it's enough that you, also, would have been surprised.

So you really are complaining about a "historical inaccuracy" that doesn't exist, just because it doesn't fit your preconceptions.

>And why just not take the mood badges? No mood badge, no monitoring
I'd imagine that refusing a mood badge would mean the robots couldn't register you as happy. If they detect an absence of happy that means you get to become fertilizer.
>>
One minor thing that bothered me a tiny bit about the episode.

They went to the trouble of post-processing out most of the obviously-modern fixtures at the City of Arts and Sciences to make it look even more futuristic, but they missed a few. You can see what are obviously present-day sodium street lamps in one shot, and there's a cable run that appears in one shot but not in two others (and I don't even know why they removed it, because it looks futuristic enough).

Again, only a tiny thing. But… were rushed in post or something? (If so, I guess that makes it even more impressive that they did as well as they did, but you'd hope after all these years Moffat would have figured out how to deal with production schedules and BBC budgets and all that shit.)
>>
>>81931002
>And it's also right in the era when the number of black people was at the highest (until maybe the modern day)
>freed black slaves were at a higher level than the post-west indies migration of the 1960s

Are you retarded?
>>
>>81931154
How would you detect an absence of something that you can't measure is or isn't there in the first place?

They go strictly by the mood things, anyone that opts out, they can't see as happy or sad, they don't register whatsoever.
>>
>>81931306
>until the modern day
>but what about the modern day?
Duh...
>>
>>81930993
1) Privilege is on a systemic level, rather than necessarily individual level. Overall, society systematically favors straight white men, even though individually there may be outliers.

2) Compared to a minority individual in your situation, you still have more privilege of getting out of the situation. It's not that you don't have it bad. It's that a minority person in your situation, would have it even worse, because they would have to deal with the biases of being a minority, on top of your issues.

3) If you're in Britain instead of the US, it might be more complicated, since classism seems to be more important in Britain than in the US.

In the early 1800's the main ethnic group in london was white british, followed by the irish, followed by french, italian, german and spanish refugees, followed by small communities of chinese people, and black and indian sailors.

They just weren't that big of a presence.

>How would you detect an absence of something that you can't measure
That's the very essence of being unable to detect something. Look at it like a percentage. Whenever the robots detect a lifeform, they might anticipate seeing 80-100% happiness. Anything less than that raises concern, then goes into execution mode. If they find someone unreadable, they might come up as 0% happy. So the robot tries to give them a meter to verify if that's true or not. If the person refuses the meter then that means they have something to hide, or that they're staying at below 80% happy.

Why would it go into execution mode?

They only attack at sadness and grief. Didn't attack for example when the Doctor and Bill were just being curious and stuff like that

They didn't even attack the guys with guns until the guys shot them.

But anyway:

https://www.oldbaileyonline.org/static/Population-history-of-london.jsp
>Following the end of hostilities at the conclusions of the Seven Years War in 1763 and the American War in 1783, a large number of black men and women from Africa, the Caribbean and North America settled in London. By the last quarter of the eighteenth century the black population of London is estimated to have been between 5,000 and 10,000. The outcome of the American War in particular also resulted in the establishment of a large American loyalist community, both white and black.

First thing that comes up if you ask Google for the number of black people in London in the 1810s. Of course it's a few decades off, but you can see that it's definitely not "probably about 100 black people in total". It's nearly 1% of London, not "less than 0.1%".

Capaldi:
>And also I like when one adventure is connected quite directly to the next one because then that suggests that when the next one is not connected, that there is a chunk of time in there in which anything could have happened, in which a spinoff series could have happened.

Is he looking forward to Big Finish?

I could have tried to argue the first part but yeah this is a really good point. Never mind, I'll go fuck myself. I got nothing here.

Will Bill be Capaldi's signature companion? The one he'll turn up with in multi-Doctor episodes to come?

The only choices are Clara, Nardole, and Bill.

And I can see Big Finish doing a bunch of 12 and Nardole stories, but a multi-Doctor episode isn't likely to do that.

But I'd say Clara has a better shot than Bill, given that she had two seasons with him, and was central to his return to Gallifrey (and Gallifrey is involved in a lot of multi-Doctor episodes).

Unless by the end, S10 is received a whole lot better than S8-9 were.

1) maybe because white men are usually the breadwinners as they have always been expected to, white because the country is majority white and male because women tend to go for lower paying jobs and/or choosing to stay at home.

2) I am getting out of the situation by paying for a distance learning course that i work on on my days off. It's not that fucking hard for a black person or some other minority to do the same, all you need is an email account and some money put to one side to pay for it.

3) Class really means fuck all anymore, it's just an excuse for lazy people to blame all their troubles on rich people who have spent decades working tirelessly on one job in order to earn their promotions and bonuses rather than getting a degree in a pointless fucking field like art or gender studies and then going from retail job to retail job.

She should be, not even two episodes in and she's already much better than Clara. You're thinking with your dick if you say otherwise.

I'm optimistic, but it's never guaranteed.

I mean, look at the first two episodes of S6, and S6 Rory looks like one of the best companions ever. But the failed arc plot really dragged him (and Amy) down, to the point where some of the writers clearly didn't know what to do with them, and I think in retrospect nobody would say that S6 Rory > S5 Amy or S5 Rory.

Also, just being better than Clara isn't enough, she has to be so much better than Clara that it makes up for only one season vs. two, and for not being part of FtR/HS/HB. And she is great, but it's not clear yet whether she's that great.
