For some reason I didn't put much faith in Kong doing well, but thinking it through, I'm not surprised it performed better overseas. The movie's more of an international crowd-pleaser and King Kong has historically had a worldwide mass appeal anyway.

Kong was a modern action film, it revelled in the spectacle and humor.
Godzilla was a disaster film which was subdued in comparison. At the end of the day people want to have fun at the theater.
