I don't necessarily mean the all time best (although pic related fits that too in my opinion) but "beginner" silent films - ones that you'd introduce to someone who's not watched them before to open their minds a bit.
My pic is the Cabinet of Dr Caligari. It was the first silent I watched, and I have since introduced it to my girlfriend who also enjoyed it. We watch it every Halloween (it's no longer scary, but is still pretty spooky and is fun to watch).
Any other suggestions?
Faust
Any Keaton
Metropolis
Sunrise
Metropolis is beginner? It's great, but try selling a 2 and a half hour silent film to someone who's never watched one before.

It's not? And that's no shame, it's literally the first horror film, and I love it - the scares have dated but the entertainment value hasn't. It's still spooky. I'd recommend it as a beginner horror for kids if I had faith in any child sitting through a silent film.

First time I saw it thought I'd misread the length as 1.5 hours rather than 150 minutes.
The film is pretty much constantly engaging you on some level. You're thinking about previous scenes, you're noticing small stuff that has been referenced in other films, you're seeing cool shit and so on. So those two and half hours goes by fairly quickly.
I mean, if you can tolerate silent B&W films, metropolis is an absolutely fantastic experience.

I do love it and you have a fair point. I watched it first time when I'd already seen a few silent films, so maybe I'm underestimating its accessibility a bit.

But from narrative perspective it's pretty accessible and hasn't aged so badly so it should be engaging enough even for a beginner.
It's great
Man With A Movie Camera
>Ctrl F - no The General
les vampires is entertaining as fuck
people act like it's a 10 hour long movie but it's not, it's a series of really short movies you can watch like a tv show and it's great, just endless double crosses and plot twists and amoral catsuited burglars fucking shit up

Someone said "any Keaton" earlier
