This is like the only mean thing he does all movie (unless you count the pepper burger bit) but he really commits.

Sure there is slapstick in the movie, like Lloyd falling off the jetway, the tongue on the ski lift or Harry's diarrhoea episode (even then, it's all just sound effects and top notch facial acting by Jeff Daniels) but most of the laughs in this movie are just from the dialogue, when they get stuff wrong without knowing it, or from funny interactions.

"A rapist wit", "the salmon of Capistrano", "John Deere letter", crying at a telephone commercial, SAMSONITE, etc

It wasn't just them going "duh, me dumb".

This is something the sequel lost, it was way more cartoony and slapsticky. It felt, well, dumber.
