It's a prequel series.
The first movie says at the end that there's a rocket being launched into space so I think eventually it'll lead into the original movie.

I get the feeling it was intended as a one off prequel but it ended up being surprisingly good and led to a kino sequel. I think everything's getting nuked at the end of this one though.

It's a reboot.
I think that they are going to do five films like the original series with the last one being a remake.
