I like it much better as it is. We only get snippets through the background of the film, so when Xavier is in bed, weeping and reflecting upon it, you kind of realize the magnitude of what occurred and can see how terribly painful it was for him. The movie's about not passing along your mistakes to the next generation ya dunce. Wolverine and Xavier were fucked up from a life of fighting and subsequent loss. Wolverine was created as a weapon, and lived as a weapon his entire life. Xavier just wanted a family, but was continually drawn into conflict. Throughout the film, they both struggle to find peace with their approaching endings as they reflect upon the failures of the past.

It's about not running away, it's about facing up to what has happened, who you are, and what you've done, so that those who come after you learn from your failures.
