What time do you go to bed?
Sir?..
Pick a card.

Usually between 1 and 2 am
My grandmother had an island
It was nothing to boast of
Call 'em
I'm thinking of a number between 1 and 10. Call it, friendo.
So what was this scene all about?

He didn't have didn't have enough money to pay, just a quarter
That's the best deal, ya gonna get.

It was meant to establish Anton's sociopathic nature.

Sir?

He's not a mindless killer. He has a philosophy, which allows him to justify his actions. In Barton Fink, Madman Mundt claims, "I know what it's like when things get balled up at the head office. So I help people out".
Death is inevitable. Life is only pain, because death is also random, and the chances only increase as you get older, like waging a bet over and over again, which only increases what you stand to lose each time you win.
It's actually pretty difficult to argue with. Which is worse, death coming randomly, or being able to see it and prepare yourself? The only reason it doesn't hold up is that it applies to Chigurh too, hence the car crash at the end. If he was truly logical, he would have kill himself immediately after getting the briefcase.

Why didn't he just apply some more philosophy, go to school, and get a respectable career?

Because it's just a justification after the fact. He wants to kill people anyone, but he's smart enough to know it's wrong, so he uses philosophy to make it seem logical. Again, it all falls apart because he doesn't apply it to himself, so he's really not THAT smart, just smarter than the av-er-age bear.
Also, he got way more money than any cuck professor would.
