What's a film that evokes the same emotions and themes that this painting does?
Not a film, but maybe "Shut up and dance" from season 3 of Black Mirror would interest you

Othello

Last of the Timelords. This scene literally happens. Just it being Doctor Who.. it's shitty.

Love that painting.
Maybe There Will be Blood when he screams
>I've abandoned my child!
But that doesn't quite feel the same. It doesn't match the finality of this picture. The horror in Ivan's eyes, the realization of what he did to his own first born.... the lavish but somehow empty and dark background
A powerful image

>no mention of Barry Lyndon
wtf senpai
This is complete dramatization. There's not much evidence Ivan IV actually regretted killing his son that much. He later would go into fits about it, but he was probably bipolar and would throw fits over everything.
Whichever kino this shot is from

This is surprisingly accurate. Despite it's cancerous tumblr following, this show was into some pretty touching tragedy.

>>81864432
How does Barry Lyndon capture similar emotions to the painting. It's extremely un sentimental if anything (excluding the scene of Brian's death).
>>81863996
Absolutely not, where the hell did you get that from?

Jake in that scene is seems more subtly defeated. You can tell that he's trying to hold it together on the outside while the guilt and the vindication of all of his previous worries are brewing underneath.
>>81864447
>what is drama but life with the dull bits cut out?
>>81864540
You notice better how broken he is in motion. He's somewhere between the the two figures in OPs painting when it comes to his state of mind.
But the end of the day, a great wrongness has taken place, and there's nothing to be done to take that back.
>>81862053
FUCK that painting is *amazing*
Just fucking damn. More. I long to give a performance that harrowing.

This. Still the only film I've seen where I needed to go for a walk afterwards to get fresh air.

You should watch Ran.
>>81864723
I prefer OP's because it looks like the only light is coming from a fireplace and gives a more claustrophobic and lonely feel to me.

Ivan the Terrible realizing he just accidentally killed his son in a fit of rage, which would destroy his legacy and leave Russia on the brink of disaster
His thought his daughter-in-law was dressed immodestly, got into an argument with his son, and hit with him his staff (laying on the ground in the photo) as he was known to do when mad
>>81865127
>>81865279
this left him with no suitable heir and too old to father another one.
the only other son was mentally slow or something
>>81864523
I was thinking the feeling of complete despair and stressful atmosphere
>>81864131
This, despite the cancerous tumblr fanbase. It's a nice tragic love story.

it's kind of a shitty translation, it's more like "Ivan the Badass"

I bet none of you have watched this Turkish TV show but it literally has this theme where the ruling father murders his own son who was accused of being a traitor, only to regret it until the end of his days.
