You should check out the books. They get progressively more shit, but they are definitely worth a read if you have the time. In essence the sequence is about an existential cowboy knight from a parallel mytho-futuristic America on a quest trying to save the multiverse from sublime evil. The setting, at least in the first book, is quite haunting and even later books have the occasional decent meme or chapter

It's no Clive Barker, but for what it's worth, The Dark Tower is one of King's finest works. I would have liked to see a cinematic adaptation, but I'm not holding my breath that this will be good. Same with American Gods.

Judging by the trailer, very, judging by the total black hole this has ended up in promotionally, insanely.

Overall problems, Dark Tower does not work as a film, it would need to be a tv mini series, going by the trailer they try to compress it into a movie which is simply pointless, it will just be a mess.

Also, if you are a fan of the books, there just no way you will ever have envisioned Roland as anything other than a Clint Eastwood'escue white guy with steel cold blue eyes.

It's not as if King is ambigous about the ethnicity, Susannah Dean is clearly described as a black woman.

So from a fan-perspective, it's going to be very hard to accept Idris Elba as the gunslinger, and given that there is no point whatsoever in casting him as Roland other than the racial card (it's not as if Elba is some box office draw), it's bullshit.
