I don't Rick and Morty because I feel like I could write it. Something about its style just reminds me TOO much about my sense of humour and comedic timing (my friends say I'm the funniest person they know). I tend to like shows I wouldn't be able to write because they are too clever, like Malcolm in the Middle, Nathan For You, or Arrested Development. I don't really respect Rick and Morty because I feel like I could write for it, so maybe its a very personal gripe.

Rick's edgiest thought is that familial ties are irrelevant because it flies in the face of what is natural for a human. This is a problem for me for a lot of things. I flirted with trying to seriously be a comedy writer for a while, but I decided I really kinda sucked. So it's very annoying when jokes or dialogue is really transparent and you just see the writer talking to you instead of a character.

For all the bullshit this show gets and dishes out, nobody notices that Rick is well written as a man of constant contradiction with himself. A massive atheist that prays when things get out of his control. A man who denounces love but gets suicidal when he loses it. A man who says he cares nothing for others but certainly put an effort to keep his grandkids alive & stay on his daughter's good side. He's smart, but too stupid to know how to heal his own suffering. His nihilism isn't real, it's just a ploy he uses to distract himself from his personal demons.
The whole show is wrapped in complete idiocy, memes, and popular culture. If you can ignore that, you have good story about a moderately unstable Morty that's slowly becoming a stronger person and his grandfather who's travels across time & space might as well be him running from an unknown past.
