What was his problem? Seriously, what was his actual problem?
Treason.
>>81831136
He's white and a male
>>81831136
Noone knows. George didn't think it would be important for us to know the background of the main villain for the entire trilogy, who would see to the death of thousands of people, including main characters like the Jedi who tried to kill him.
Hero of the galaxy against an unseen enemy.
He was literally psychotic.
>>81831421
This. Episode 9 better have some major revelation/redemption arc for him.
Malignant Narcissistic Personality Disorder
He was the living embodiment of evil in the form of a wizard
>>81831495
Ah yes, the Trump condition
>>81831500
He really cut through that republic bureaucracy though. You have to give him credit for that.
>>81831136
He had a completely unlimited will to power and an unwillingness to just be another mediocre member of the herd.
>>81831523
Of course, I think he was justified in his actions although killing off the jedi was too far.
>>81831136
He didn't have any problems. He was enjoying the shit out of life and true to himself.
>>81831451
Disney isn't even going to so much as mention Palpatine in the new trilogy
>>81831605
From his point of view, the Jedi are evil. So he probably didn't go too far enough.
>>81831573
In that sense, Lucas is a hack for making him just a human duplicate of Jar Jar.
When you consider who he was up against it's no wonder he was so happy
>>81831708
Jesus Christ. Were the Jedi autistic?
What would have happened if Vader beat Obi-Wan, didn't choke Padme, and didn't get fucked up in his battle?
Would Palpatine have abdicated his throne later on for him?
It seemed like he really believed Vader would be even more powerful than him, like he wanted him to take his place and run the empire.
>>81831764
>Would Palpatine have abdicated his throne later on for him?
No. Vader was always a disposable puppet. If Vader became a threat he'd kill him via trickery.
>>81831740
Was Patty Hearst?
I mean, this is an ancient nutjob cult that kidnaps children and brainwashes them to be part of what's basically a shadow government.
>>81831764
One would have ended up killing the other. Their partnership only went as far their own self interests.
>>81831136
So what was his endgame exactly?
>>81832068
Unlimited power
>>81831523
He was the senate.
Didn't have any friends and never got laid as a teen so he latched onto ultra dark wing alt-sith ideology to make himself feel better about being a loser and feel like he belongs somewhere and convince himself he's inherently special. His alt-sith mentor, Darth Plagus raped him and gave him force aids so he killed him in rage and then had a complete mental breakdown from loss of trust and belonging. He lost his mind, evident from constant shifting emotions, one moment laughing, next moment intense rage...and just devoted himself to lashing out at a galaxy of people who he felt rejected him. Some time later, he ended up dead at the bottom of a long shaft before being exploded by space fish.
>>81831740
Yes
>>81831764
It seems like he did genuinely want Vader to rule the empire one day but only through the Sith tradition of killing him first. Palpatine wasn't going to give up his power without a fight. Aside from that, however, Palpatine also seemed to care for Anakin to at least some degree. Of course how much of that 'care' was just Sith manipulation is debatable but I like to believe that, even if he didn't care about him, that Palpatine was more open and honest with Anakin than anyone else in the galaxy.
>>81832289
Not yet.
>>81832336
Wait, when did they attack one of those Trade Federation ships from the inside?
>>81831387
What background do you need? He was an evil, power hungry cunt. Nothing more or less. The only real question was "how did he succeed so thoroughly?" which the prequels do answer, for better or worse.
>>81831516
>politicize star wars even more
This franchise should be hung and left to rot outside
>>81832336
>that shot of them just flailing around while entering the control room
>>81832336
when the door opens lmfao!
He was sick of paying the republic's taxes
There was potential for a good origin story, but the prequel fucked it up. The jedi are kinda dicks and it easy to how not everyone would agree with them. If Palapatine had been set up as a revolutionary figure like Mao or Lenin with the goal of giving power to the common people rather than a handful of force user things might have been more interesting.
>>81831136
A lot of meme lefty film lovers (rian johnson included) will say he's the physical manifestation of fascism itself. He's actually supposed to represent the jew. Lucas can't outright say that of course but that's what we're all thinking.
>>81831451
>Archetypal embodiment of Evil
>HE NEEDS AN ANIME REDEMPTION ARC
millennials were a mistake
>>81832411
All of the prequels have loads of deleted scenes, Revenge of the Sith deleted like 3 entire subplots
>>81835935
Why are you using Endless Space art for a Star Wars thread?
>>81831136
Idk. The prequels were too confusing to understand what was going on
>>81832379
I feel this shot was meant to convey that Sheev did actually care about Anakin, he's weirdly tender in it
>>81831764
Anakin kills him.
He as evil.
