Alamarain! Pro-tip, the secret to making not shitty trek threads is to not put /trek/ in the title. Generals are always pure cancer.

Don't play dumb. The last thread isn't even dead yet, and this thread has only been around for 20 minutes. You've been there. Anyone can see that you're being disingenuous.

Can't you post honestly for once, or has your 7-year vendetta caused shitposting to become the very core of your being?
>>
>>81827064
It came to early in the series to be effective, but is a hidden gem in rewatches. DS9 is so radically different from other trek series that it's still establishing expectations for the show and characters, so the sudden shift in tone is confusing the first time you see it.
>>
>>81827288

you are clearly obsessed so I am going to ignore you from now on
>>
>>81827413
As long as you make it an obscure reference instead of one of the constantlyreused memes they can work out. I know what you mean though, some of the best trek threads I've seen were on /v/ or /pol/.
>>
>>81827103
>>81827533
It's boring, and intentionally so.

The characters explain to the audience that the novel is poorly-written cliche-filled trash. Because of this, the setting is meant to come off as "intentionally bad". And indeed, the guest characters are flat, their delivery is wooden, the pacing plods along, just as the show's writers intended. However, too much time is spent in this setting, because the regular characters never seem to take it seriously or make concerted attempts to move the story along. There's an overload of this "intentionally bad" style that shifts the episode from "intentionally bad" to just plain simple "bad".
>>
>>81827630
maybe then you should leave and join the other teenagers and manchild so we can actually talk about star trek instead of having people whine about other people not accepting different tastes

Well, considering the Queen and her agenda concept bullshit VOY introduced this indeed seems like a strong possibility.
>>
>>81828093
Maybe you weren't paying enough attention, but that's not just my opinion. That's the opinion from the episode itself.

>"I have come to understand that the alien contaminators created this place for me out of some sense of guilt, presuming that the novel we had on board the shuttle about the Hotel Royale was in fact a guide to our preferred lifestyle and social habits. Obviously, they thought this was the world from which I came. I hold no malice toward my benefactors. They could not possibly know the hell they have put me through, for it was such a badly written book, filled with endless cliché and shallow characters. I shall welcome death when it comes." - Colonel Stephen G. Richey
The audience is forced to spend too much time in a setting that the characters in-universe describe as trash.

No, no, no. There's nothing gay about being a manlet. I'm not one, mind you, but your premise is wrong.

In fact, the oppression one faces as being a man of low height often results in greatness.

I think a human being's mind is what matters, not his height.

JK Abrams is notorious for not understanding distances in space. Prime Spock and 09 Kirk get stranded on some ice world close enough to Vulcan for them to clearly see its destruction in the sky. Vulcan has no moons so JJ probably just made up a random planet close enough to Vulcan for dramatic effect. Then he did the exact same thing in TFA when death Star 3.0 blows up five planets and somehow all of this is visible from the planet our main characters are on IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DAY.

Yeah, the fact that he's able to go back to life fairly quickly and proceed as normal really weakens this episode. It's strange that it's so highly rated. I mean it's comparable to being kidnapped by the Borg, maybe even worse in some ways. But then it might be that he wasn't actually forced to live through a lifetime's worth of memories on a hopeless planet, but was given a limited number of very strong memories that his mind filled in and rationalized, like the way we do for dreams but on a more sophisticated level. I mean a pre-warp civilization with the technology to probe an alien race's mind has to take some cheats.

He doesn't have some kind of wireless uplink to the ship all the time. He's his own dude.

In all seriousness, where could they possibly go with the Star Trek franchise at this point?

All four quadrants of the Milky Way galaxy have already been visited and explored, and pretty much all of the galaxy's major civilizations and empires have been contacted, allied with, or defeated.

I figured that they would have tried to connect the Star Trek franchise with the Andromeda franchise in some way, possibly setting the new Star Trek series 3,000 years after the events of Star Trek: Voyager (in a time after the Federation has already visited and explored both of the Triangulum and Andromeda galaxies, and the Federation has collapsed.)

But the new Star Trek series will be set before the original series, suggesting that they'll just be retconning the entire Star Trek franchise once more by going the same route as Star Trek: Enterprise and the new Star Trek film series (involving time travel and alternate realities and whatnot.) And considering that it seems that Star Trek: Enterprise was the least popular live-action Star Trek series, it does not seem that Star Trek: Discovery will be very successful.
>>
>>81849732
Is discovery in the prime timeline or reboot alternate timeline?
>>
>>81849732
>All four quadrants of the Milky Way galaxy have already been visited and explored
This is untrue. They barely explored the Beta quadrant and we're never, at least explicitly told, about being in the Beta quadrant so as we'd know it's a part of the adventures.

But some have expressed interest in exploring a new galaxy. And connecting with Andromeda, a series no one watched and for most people wasn't that great, would be terrible for Star Trek.

They could still do even more than they are doing in a fixed period of time with canon crunching it between ENT and TOS/TNG/DS9/VOY (which is WAY worse than being in Enterprise's position).

This idea of having it near or prior to TOS is clearly a move targeting the JJ era crowd of Gen Z/younger millenials who never got into Trek.
>>
>>81849943
Oh, and I forgot, we also see only bits and pieces of the Gamma Quadrant. They could explore further in the center or outer areas. Geographically, none of this is even a issue. In TNG's era, they are mostly trouncing about in Alpha quadrant, and it is basically the reason the franchise still exists.

Isn't the capital planet of the United Federation of Planets supposed to be Earth (which is located right in between both the Alpha and Beta quadrants)? And both the Romulan and Klingon empires are located in the Beta quadrant, while the Ferengi and Cardassians are located in the Alpha quadrant?

>But some have expressed interest in exploring a new galaxy. And connecting with Andromeda, a series no one watched and for most people wasn't that great, would be terrible for Star Trek.

Well the Andromeda series lasted five years, and managed to last longer than Star Trek: Enterprise.

I think that with Star Trek: Discovery the writers will quickly realize how restricted they are setting the series before Star Trek: The Original Series, and will inevitably introduce: the Mirror Universe, time travel (and introducing future technologies to the past possibly allowing the cast to travel beyond the Milky Way galaxy.)

>>81849977

>Oh, and I forgot, we also see only bits and pieces of the Gamma Quadrant. They could explore further in the center or outer areas.

Didn't they already reach the core of the galaxy and find out that the Borg pretty much dominated that whole region at the end of Star Trek: Voyager?
>>
>>81850378
Lol, that is hilarious.
>>
>>81850791
Thr Borg dominate the Delta quadrant, the Dominion has the Gamma quadrant, and the Alpha and Beta are dominated by the governments we are most familiar with; Federartion, Klingons, Romulans, ect. To be fair though most of the shows take place in the Alpha quadrant and rarely do much in the Beta. Also, as of early TNG, only about 11% of the galaxy had been explored by the federation.
>>
>>81850378
why are there two NCC-1701s?
>>
>>81849732
>>81850791
We barely know anything about the Gamma and Delta Quadrants.

Most of the exploration in the Gamma Quadrant has been in the immediate vicinity of the wormhole. Nothing has been shown that's even, say, a month's travel distant from the wormhole.

Most of Voyager is spent traveling in a straight line, and large sections of the journey are skipped thanks to Kes and slipstream and other bullshit.

There's so much of both that we haven't seen.

I want to see the Andromeda Galaxy to, but Star Trek has barely touched our own galaxy so far.

Yes it is.

Hard Sci Fi is about the reality of space. The vast, unending nothingness and despair that comes from the finality of the universe. Coming to the realization that you are nothing more than an amoeba compared to what's out there. That the vast majority of your life, your hopes, dreams, aspirations, ambitions, all of it, is largely out of your control.

The actual story from The Royale is fucking horrifying. That letter that the astronaut wrote explaining the situation brings it all back in the end.

The term Hard sci-fi means it is based on actual science with efforts made to make it as scientifically accurate and realistic as possible. The term has absolutely nothing to do with the tone of the work

Why didn't you address my comments? I said that most of the time we can never tell anything is happening inside of the Beta quadrant unless they explicitly state in the dialogue.

>Didn't they already reach the core of the galaxy and find out that the Borg pretty much dominated that whole region at the end of Star Trek: Voyager?
No, they didn't. One episode of finding a Borg trans-warp conduit inside of nebula doesn't count. The only other times I know of where they explore the center of the galaxy is the Citherians and in the fifth TOS movie.

I remember when this happened, and I still think it's petty as fuck. Love him or hate him, JJ raised Star Trek from the dead. He breathed new life into a franchise that had over 40 years of baggage, and I will never fault him for that, no matter how logically incoherent Trek 09 was.

Into Darkness was inexcusable though.
>>
>>81851939
right, but I wasnt talking of the air date to end, in which case enterprise lasted just under five years, but counting production and all of that, it was closer to 5 and half years, in which case you are splitting hairs, and what was your original point anyways? How is the difference of literally less than a year something to hang your hat on regarding the respective success of each series? And don't change the issue, you made the timing of the shows an issue, not their ratings or their critical reviews. make a point please
>>
>>81850001

Not necessarily though, 2001 is considered by most hard sci-fi, but it doesn't go to painstaking lengths to be super accurate science.

>>IS this real?
>
>Please explain it

a shitty appeal to the old fans, even though it literally doesn't matter because of how garbage the show is turning out.
>>
>>81852129
Dude this is autism. When discussing how long a TV show lasted, you go from when it went on the air to when it went off the air. Andromeda lasted for 5 seasons, Enterprise for 4. In the Television business, that means Andromeda did better than Enterprise.
>>
>>81852357
Perhaps, but that is the definition. It is not based on the philosophy on human existence the work has but on the "perceived" rigor of scientific accuracy.
>>
>>81852464
My point is that the scientific rigor found in hard sci-fi generally moves the tone of hard sci-fi stories that way. Look at 2001, Interstellar, The Foundation series, Ender's Game, etc.

Sci-fi itself in the broader sense is a genre explicitly concerned with the human condition, and humanity's place in the universe. The Royale was not a terrible episode.
>>
>>81852448
>still evades my question
Read my post again.

>How is the difference of literally less than a year something to hang your hat on regarding the respective success of each series? And don't change the issue, you made the timing of the shows an issue, not their ratings or their critical reviews. make a point please
How is that a point to be made against the respective success, respective critical acclaim, respective relevance to the Star Trek franchise when discussing the difference of a "season" (which has vacillating definitions based upon the network and the timeslots)? How is that a point to be made? Answer that, stop switching goal posts, you typed it out, now you keep doubling back.
>>
>>81852513
I never argued that The Royale was bad, just that it was not hard science fiction. Which it isn't, nor is any Star Trek. That does not make them bad, it is merely a stylistic choice. I personally prefer soft sci-fi like Trek and Farscape myself.
>>
>>81852536
I'm not the guy you've been arguing with even though I wrote that last post, but my last sentence alludes to your main question.

In the old school, network TV business, every season matters. Something like 80% of all TV shows never make it past the first season. A show that lasted 2 seasons compared to a show that lasted one is considered WAY more successful. In that old-school world, every season a TV show is on the air represents continued success. So yes, one extra season does mean a lot.

Let's also not forget that Enterprise started out in Voyager's Monday night timeslot on UPN (primetime), and by Season 4 it was sentenced to the chopping block of Friday night. Enterprise was declining from the moment it premiered.

None of this means I hate Enterprise by the way; I loved the show.
>>
>>81852625
Trek is hard sci-fi, they had science consultants on board TNG to make sure things were at least somewhat plausible.

Soft sci-fi doesn't even bother with that.
>>
>>81852513

If you aren't that guy, you have to acknowledge that he was trying to argue using Andromeda and making it a part of the Star Trek universe somehow.
>>81849732

And when pointed out it didn't have many viewers and by most people around Trek considered garbage, that it would be a terrible backdrop for the new series, he responds with a comparison to Andromeda and Enterprise, assuming he knew he didn't have a leg to stand on comparing Andromeda with any of the other Star Treks so he'd use the weakest to help his weird, awful argument that it would be a good idea to use Trek in Andromeda.

There, I just fucking murdered that guys argument and any ancillary consideration about seasonal renewment of shows is completely unnecessary and irrelevant to the main point.

Trek is a mix of the two, a lot of the concepts in the show are based on some sort of real scientific theory, and they put some thought into the tech in the show instead of just pulling it out of their ass like they would in, say, Star Wars. However, "soft sci fi" also means that it covers soft science, that is to say social sciences, which is pretty much the defining theme of Star Trek. It is generally classified as soft sci fi but it definitely has hard sci fi elements to it.
>>
>>81852899
>I just wanted to point out that he was right that it was a more successful show.

No, he wasn't right. I keep having to point this out because are about as daft as they come it appears.

Star Trek: Enterprise got put to Blu-Ray. It was the fourth in a series of four series, the second on it's network, suffering from franchise fatigue, pulled down a greater share, and has sold more merchandise as a result of it's being on air than Andromeda could've ever hoped to have accomplished.

This is not in ANY dispute, I could post all of this as it's provably so.

Please stop posting. Please be better at life. Something.

I'm the guy who originally wrote the post here >>81849732 and I suppose that I have no choice but to agree with you on this. The reason I suggested that Star Trek should be merged with Andromeda in the first place because I was disappointed to find out that Star Trek: Discovery would be a prequel series rather than a sequel series. If the new Star Trek series had been a sequel series, the writers could have tried going in a new direction by having the Federation explore new galaxies leading into a setting somewhat similar to Andromeda.

But if Star Trek: Enterprise turned out to be more successful than Andromeda as you say, then maybe setting Star Trek: Discovery before the original series might not be entirely bad idea.

I've also been able to enjoy both of these series (Star Trek: Enterprise and Andromeda) for different reasons.
