He was just a dude with a dumb idea (his calculations were way off, and there's no way China would have been there, which is why the Portuguese wouldn't fund him), who got lucky. He was also a shit governor.

He did nothing of real significance. Made it to America through sheer stupidity and then proceeded to genocide the native population and acted like he was a genius

I think he did a pretty good job directing the first two Harry Potter movies.
