As if there's anything to find, out in that desolate void. We are already living on the most attractive planet known to mankind that shelters us from cosmic radiation, meteors, and dangers innumerable. It offers us freely nutrients, food, endless oceans, gravity, companions, music and beauty beyond comprehension.
The most precious blue jewel, that glimmers brightly through the solar system and beyond.
As if I'd ever leave this heavenly paradise for some god-forsaken, dead, lifeless rock.
Humanity has a tough lesson to learn, but only then will it be able to ease the restlessness and greed poisoning its heart that always seems to yearn for more. The truth is, we're the wealthiest in the known universe, and we don't even realize it.
We must look deep into ourselves, see this planet, truly see it, as if for the first time - and finally find harmony and peace where it all begins: at home.

>>81826077
I got curious about how the amount of water on the moon would compare to earth in relation to the surface area. Little rough math:
>In March 2010, it was reported that the Mini-SAR on board Chandrayaan-1 had discovered more than 40 permanently darkened craters near the Moon's north pole that are hypothesized to contain an estimated 600 million metric tonnes (1.3 trillion pounds) of water-ice.
Which equates to about 130,000,000,000 gallons, on just one pole.
Which sounds like a lot but earth has appx:
352,670,000,000,000,000,000 gallons of water.
Stopping right there and eyeballing the numbers it looks to me like the moon is a lot dryer than earth even if you melted it all. They'd either have to be really efficient with what they have or ship some up there.
>>81824412
>say something nice to her.
I guess her acting has improved slightly since the start of the season
>>81826452
We're not all going to go to space. We can clone the entire human population and send it out to individual planets. There will be automatic genetic divergence from that point on, due to the different environments.
how much spook will be in tonight's episode? last week I got scared
>>81826802
If we travel beyond our solarsystem we might be considered competition and get stepped on by ayys
>>81826236
>You really think humanity will stay just fine if we stay on just one damn planet?
If our species stops being a greedy little bitch, thinking of only itself yeah. Look at yourself. You'd send people into space colonizing without even knowing what kind of lasting effects it could have on them. FYI we can't even reach high orbit without running into the Van Allen radiation belt.
Who knows, it might as well be that this show is right and you'd have a bunch freakishly tall monsters on your hands that can't even handle breathing on the surface of Earth after a few generations.
Or microbes. In space there are no microbes, fungi nor bacteria. We're only just starting to understand that our gut flora is detrimental to our health. It digests your food for you, protects you from illnesses and rival organisms. When the gut flora is damaged obesity, diabetes, allergies, various cardiovascular disorders or even cancer are very likely to appear in the body.
That is with a merely injured gut flora. When toddlers put everything in their mouth, cat tails, houseplants and most importantly, soil, they're effectively training their immune system and likely creating their own gut flora which they partly acquire from their mother's milk, because the earth is ripe with bacteria and a lot of them are quite beneficial to us actually.
So how do you think people would fare without it in space? Or what if shit goes wrong and our microbes turn against us?
We're tied to this planet in more ways than you could possibly imagine.

Wish she'd die so they could recast her.

desu one thing scifi shit never properly accounts for is the very real and serious limitations of space travel. people always like to compare it to the age of discovery when no one knew about the americas, but its simply not comparable to space.
the sheer distance alone is a near insurmountable obstacle. the utterly inhospitable nature of space is another.
and its funny, because even though this show might not be "hard scifi," it definitely works to stay grounded in reality. but even the epstein drive is space-magicked out of nowhere to even make the story work

There's really not much discovery in this. Pretty much all destinations are places people have known about for dozens of not hundreds of years. The tiny numbered asteroids they sometimes come across I assume were close enough to a human outpost that they were named automatically by some sort of scanning system. The Mormons are doing their thing, but everyone besides them thinks they're idiots for exploring. The drive is kind of bullshit though.
>>81827555
No, I agree. I was more referring to the anons arguing about space colonization and shit.
I like that the Expanse stays solidly in the solar system (and really the inner planets). But even then, you still need the magical Epstein Drive for the story to work, where Earth to Mars is only hours instead of weeks.

>>81829642
Yeah I was thinking more about this, the amount of water on earth vs the number of inhabitants doesn't mean that much. We don't have access to the vast majority of the water. It's really tough to say exactly how much water would be needed on the moon to sustain people long term without knowing what kind of technology we have by the time we reach that point, but it might not be that much.

Actually the fact they can't use robots for that job is the whole reason tat the belt and even mars were colonized in the first place.
Robots controlled from earth would be subject to speed of light delay so it's better to have humans nearby controlling them and it's cheaper to just send humans to do the job than transporting the whole infrastructure needed to automate that work.
Also UN controlled earth doesn't have a functional economy and settling other worlds is basically their version of paying people to dig and fill ditches.
>>81831433
>Decent episode, but it didn't feel like a finale. Oddly enough, episode 5 felt like this season's finale overall, everything else after that was like a new season.
It's because 5 was the ending of the first books plot and everything after was the first 2/3rds of book 2
Why do they keep fucking up and not have the end of the season be the end of the book? That's like book to tv adaption 101. At least season one still ended with a climax, but this is just embarrassing.
Why did no one just go get Holden while the creature was distracted by digging for energy? The biggest problem with Mars is the gravity. Everything else there's a solution for, granting that some of them are far-fetched. But there's just not an answer for the gravity. So even if we could figure out every other aspect of surviving there and terraforming, any colonists that settle there are very quickly (in generational) terms going to deviate from Earth humans biologically. You would very quickly have a new phenotype that would grow ever less compatible with Earthlings, until they were a different species entirely.
This is why I think that, when it comes to space colonization, planets and large bodies won't be used for that for a long time. It will just be artificial space stations and relatively small bodies that can be "spun up" as in this show to come relatively close to Earth gravity.
>>81836451

I don't think colonizing the solar system in the next couple hundred years is realistic. Not that we couldn't, it's just that it's very hard to colonize anyplace available - hard enough that we would need a good reason to. Overpopulation of earth, sure, but it's less expensive to figure that out locally than build a bunch of domes on Mars and ship people up there. If we found some really useful mineral to mine or something like that maybe I could see it.

He's a huge fan of the show and he's been bringing it some publicity and making some behind the scenes videos of the props and costumes. Not sure if he's a paid shill though. Either way, that's why he's in the show.

No, it's all over the fucking place, the pilot episode had shit from book 2 because they do that stupid jumping back and forth between characters thing that the Game of Thrones books do. They're most of the way through book 2 now.
>>81842106
thanks a lot mate
not sure reading spacekino gives the same experience, but will try
Naomi and Holden keep getting worse.
I'm 10 minutes into the episode and I already paused twice because of that goddamn atrocious accent of Naomi. Couldn't they have cast anyone else. It's even worse when she's yelling and trying to be bossy, which is completely unconvincing. Just yapping in that out of place British fucking accent.
Holden I can live with, even though he's got a literal "I'm acting" face going on every time he's serious or angry. Yes you can use squinty eyes sometimes man, but not for half your screentime.
>>81824672
The Cantabury and other ships like it were literally just water haulers though. Ceres got stricter water rations because it got blown up. If you've already got gold and platinum out the ass, you'd rather have water.
>>81841928
the producers are pretty adament about the seasons not being a book each. Chrisjen doesnt appear until book 2 but she is season 1 because they wanted the story's perspective from Earth's POV
>>81842078
>that time Amos and Alex fought and Amos almost threw Alex down the stairs
makes me sad bro

>>81826202
Granny > Drummer > Amos = Alex
>>81830108
thats how you fight in space. space is big but you dont have to worry about the nuclear fallout so you use nukes
>>81836573
Wrong on both accounts. You can't spin up a rock like ceres to 0.3G and expect it not to disintegrate.
And unless there's selective breeding on mars you won't suddenly have a different species after a few generations. Humans seem to be able to breed with eachother despite multiple thousands of years of living in different locations. Growing up in 0.3G will give complications though and might end up with people looking different but genetically they'd be the same.
Did the guys in the science drop ship die? I assume they were in open space, but they looked happy.
>>81836776
We won't be able to fix overpopulation on earth either way. However getting a head start and developing new technologies and perfecting old ones is a good goal itself.
Eventually human kind either dies on this planet or spreads the solar system and possibly beyond. The first step is having self sufficient and growing colonies on other rocks in our own system. Only a select elite of people will be part of those groups.
At least if Islam doesn't win and we spend our days plowing trucks into each other for not adhering to the correct version of the death cult that is. Because honestly that seems more likely.

>>81843018
i believe so, i think they looked suprised and awe-inspired by wtf was happening

The books are great. Holden gets called a stupid cunt by virtually everyone, and Bobbie is infinitely better.

>>81844005
This. Just finished E13 and i think im done with the show now. How can an actual well written strong womyn character be miscasted and ruined so badly by the show. The writing is appaling, she has very little in common with book characters description and she cant act for shit. She shouldve been crushed by this stupid elevator.
Atleast it was fun for a bit over season, i just cant stomach this character for several seasons to come since she has thick plot armor in books.
