What are your thoughts on Alan's father and the hunter being played by the same actor? What were they trying to convey?

Overcoming fear of loving the father.

To be honest, I didn't realize it until I was an adult.
It's pretty straightforward, isn't it? Facing your father like a man, instead of sulking like a child, is part of growing up. Alan was a little whiny bitch who got bullied by everyone and responded to his dad's advice by throwing a tantrum. 30 years in a jungle and dealing with a demonic game gave him a little perspective (namely that his dad wasn't so awful and could be reasoned with).

This. It's similar to how Captain Hook is traditionally played by the same actor as Wendy, John, and Peter's father.
(Jason Isaacs as Hook was fucking awesome.)
He harbored a fear of his father that manifested as the hunter cause the game kinda knew that already.
