He may have signed on before the story was finalized. Either way he was damned: he would've been the target of a lot of resentment if he let the films happen without him, and it wouldn't have been good for Luke's character (assuming they kept the timeframe the same and Ford and Fisher also appeared).

These movies simply shouldn't have been made to begin with. The prequels didn't need to exist either, but at least they didn't have to contend with RotJ's rather satisfying and conclusive ending (despite its faults).
>>
>>81787805
It'll be exactly as good as Rogue One or TFA, which is to say it'll be completely uninspired but will languish as a mediocre 6-7 thanks to the sheer amount of production value they put into it and the fact that they're ripping off story structures that are foundational solid

I really feel like if they fuck up Luke they will have officially shot themselves in the foot with their grand star wars plans.

Since the hype has worn off, people are starting to turn on Ep.7. Episode 8 needs nothing short of a homerun to keep people invested. Luke is a great opportunity for this as he was THE main character of star wars for most people. If he doesn't live up to the expectations people have been setting up for him for 30+years, there will be massive disappointment.
>>
>>81788126
People aren't hating on Episode 7, though. The 40+ crowd loves it and kids are connecting to it due to the cartoons and films. Disney's attachment will cause a new fan base to maintain regardless of how shitty the product is.

It doesn't matter what they do. If they put out a movie with Star Wars in the name it will make lots of money. People will still like them even if they're bad because of cognitive dissonance.

Rogue One made considerably less than TFA, and you're starting to see more and more people speak out against the Disney movies online when not too long ago that was practically sacrilege.

I agree they will always have at least some fanbase thanks to the SW brand name and Disney's marketing powers, but I think things could fall well short of everyone's expectations. Including Disney's. Not that I think they'll ever lose money on one of these movies or anything.

Disney Products in general are facing a shitton more cynicism than they did pre episode 7. Look at Marvel. People are getting tired and while it was popular to be a crazy nerd about star wars when 7 first came out, that fad wore off and now having a generally more negative opinion about it is more common place and accepted.

I'm not saying that star wars and marvel are being unanimously hated and theres a fair bit of residual fanboyism that redlettermedia just loves to mock. I'm just saying that its becoming more accepted to look at it critically again and their representation of luke is going to be really important to keep the train going.
>>
>>81787596
Ok Zizek I yield.
>>
>>81788428
Sure, people will look at it critically. But they'll say, "Oh I didn't like x, y, z, etc. This didn't feel like Star Wars. I really didn't enjoy the movie that much. I'll give it an 8/10. I love Star Wars."

Then I guess you are far more optimistic than I am. I can see people rating episode 7 down with the likes of the prequels already and contrarian faggots saying that the prequels were miles better. (I'm just going to go with the opinion that they were all pretty bad)

I feel like now that the novelty is wearing off you'll see a lot of people doing plinkett-esque scathing reviews of the sequel trilogy very very soon. And I'm not talking about just memers like e;r.

Also, if Disney has any sort of control over him any more, they had really better reel in Mark Hamill. The guy is starting to be blatantly overt with his negativity towards the movies and its not good marketing at all. Just like my previous posts: luke skywalker is more important than you think for a lot of people and Mark Hamill is a well liked guy. If disney fucks luke up and mark gets pissy, people will see less star wars.

Is John Williams going senile?
>>
>>81788711
How did you find a photo of Mark where he's not pointing at something?
>>
>>81788678
The reason why they were better than the awful episode seven was because they were prequels. I liked rogue one. It was tired and the characters were uninteresting but for what it was, I was okay with it. The Force Awakens was the most anticipated Sequel in film history, and it was shit. That's unforgivable. This guy literally says it's shit, Mark Hamil i mean, it literally called it trash, and now he fully disagrees with what they're doing to Luke. He's saying to us that they're trying to undo the myths of Luke and reduce him to nothing. Instead of bolstering their shit mary sue on her own merits, they're going to tear down the established mythology of our beloved characters and hope Rey becomes as beloved because of the resulting vacuum. But they've deceived themselves.
>>

>Also, if Disney has any sort of control over him any more, they had really better reel in Mark Hamil

Why? As long as it's not prequels-bad Star Wars fans will defend literally everything and anything with the IP slapped on it.

If a low-effort reboot of A New Hope didn't make people stop caring about Star Wars, I really don't see what Hamill running his mouth off will do

Something that bugs me about a lot of these current reboots and sequels is that they bring back all of the old characters without any attempt at class. Harrison Ford is one of my least favorite actors right now because of this.

>TFA
>"Make me old, washed up, crusty, divorced, and then fucking kill me in the end so I can stop doing this shit."
>Blade Runner 2
>"Make me old, washed up, crusty, and then fucking kill me in the end so I can stop doing this shit."
>Indiana Jones4
>Just fuck my movie up senpai

At least Mark (unlike Harrison) wanted to actually jump into his old role with gusto and he expected them to go with that and try to make Luke fun. But no, it sounds like they just want to do what they did to all the other old characters and make them depressing curmudgeons.
>>
>>81787632
>be Mark Hamill
>JJ, Ray Joe-Shmoe Johnson, and some other Disney execs call you into their office and tell you coldly, that you're "too old" to play the heart throb that Luke was known to me. To put it kindly, "You've just now aged as gracefully as Ford."
>Your entire stock shorted and your dignity robbed because you signed your contract without reading the fine text, believing that you had some good will control over your character.
>get shoe-horned by Disney to keep their end of the contract, into the last minute of SW7 the franchise you made into what it is.
>still legally enslaved to Disney for the next half decade as they decide how to best write you off.
>keep up a passive-aggressive PR image to make sure your image is not forever tarnished as a push-over as well when people look back in a few years.
>>
>>81789162
My point has been that people are over the initial hype and the seams are starting to show. Negativity abounds surrounding TFA and if they don't nail this, they might permanently shin themselves for the rest of their star wars cinematic universe. People are starting to get cynical.
>>
>>81787596
Kek'd.
>>
>loved seeing Lukes post-Jedi journey into a wizened jedi badass
>Disney wipes that all away
>Luke at least looks like a wizened jedi badass at the end of TFA so I'm hopeful
>more I hear about TLJ the more hope dies

Life isn't fair.
>>
>>81789365
Because like the Marvel films there's a cyclical pattern to nerd anticipation

>prolonged masturbatory anticipation (muh trailer analysis, muh autistic interpretation of released/leaked set photos etc)
>brief climax when it's out in theaters
>ennui sets in now that the dust has settled and the film watched didn't meet half its expectations
>new sequel is announced
>the next obsessive anticipation begins OH MY GOD THERE'S A TRAILER OUT

The hype will build until the next film is released, and after the nerd fanboys climax over it they'll return to this stage of ennui over how empty the actual experience was before hyping themselves up for the next one
>>
>>81789667
Sure but this cycle is having diminishing returns. Quicker now more than ever. The hype for episode 8 is much less overwhelming on the internet than it was for 7. I think this diminishing hype is effecting Marvel movies even more. I think when they finally do this infinity war series that they've been planning since ever, people will no longer care about thanos or any of that bullshit.

When did they start the Thanos buildup anyways? the first thor movie? Captain America?
