There are very very few anime that exceed the medium and can be considered a classic film, period.
End of Evangelion is one of those, Anno really catches lightning in a bottle not only with the series but especially with End of Eva, that is a movie that could have only been made with Anno's mental state at the time. Had he been healthy and optimistic at the time the movie wouldn't be the same.
Seeing symbols such as the tree of life, adam, and god taking on a physical form is really a spectacle.

Hideaki Anno had ambitions for a neon genesis evangelion episode that the broadcasting network wouldn't approve of so he held back the production intentionally so the animation studio would send it in extremely late and the broadcasting network wouldn't have time to review it.
When they received it there was no time, they just threw it on air without knowing what was in the episode.
Thanks to this, one of the most iconic moments in the entire show and possibly all of anime came to be.
