Just watched this movie two nights ago at the recommendation of /tv/. It was surprisingly raunchy. Not sure I approve.

Mathilda was a child who acted 'grown up' to help her deal with the trauma of her circumstances; while Leon was infantilised by his.

Mathilda is not a child exactly but nor is Leon really an adult, he cannot think sexually while she believes sexuality is crucial to adulthood because of her slut mom and gross dad. The reconciliation and admission of their love against all odds, both societal and personal, is the climax of the film.

Either that, or Leon thought/knew he was a dead man and lied to Mathilda (at least concerning the nature of his love) so she would trust him and eacape while he held Oldman's goons off
