I didn't understand the suffocation thing very well.
Is he doing it just because he feels good dying and coming back?
Also, what was that intro set in 1844 supposed to be? A Guilty Remnant early settlement or just religious people waiting for Jesus unironically?
>>
>>81771332
The Great Disappointment in the Millerite movement was the reaction that followed Baptist preacher William Miller's proclamations that Jesus Christ would return to the Earth in 1844, what he called the Advent. His study of the Daniel 8 prophecy during the Second Great Awakening led him to the conclusion that Daniel’s “cleansing of the sanctuary” was cleansing of the world from sin when Christ would come, and he and many others prepared, but October 22, 1844 came and they were disappointed.
These events paved the way for the Adventists who formed the Seventh-Day Adventist Church. They contended that what had happened on October 22 was not Jesus’ return, as Miller had thought, but the start of Jesus’ final work of atonement, the cleansing in the heavenly sanctuary, leading up to the Second Coming.[
>>
>>81771369
I'd never guess that. I'm guessing they'll try to push the Kevin=Jesus narrative then.
>>
>>81771332

Someone pointed out that he is probably doing it to sleep. Nora handcuffed herself to Kevin to keep him from sleepwalking, remember? This is probably how her arm got broken. So he decided to just stay awake from now on, and then kill himself after she had left in the morning because he knows he can't stay dead. This is why he didn't burn the book, he knows that they are all right but he won't admit it.
>>
>>81771745
The broken arm thing makes sense, but the asfixiation is a bit weird, because he used to take hours to come back, yet he kills himself in the morning and still leaves in the morning. It's like not even one hour passed. Unless he "evolved" and can come back faster, but to use that as a sleeping method is a bit much.

S1 starts slow, and gets tedious in the middle, but I remember the finale being the tying of the bow around that tied it all up incredibly well. I watched the show for the quality of it despite being unpleasant to watch until the finale. The finale is where I was hooked and completely on board. S2 is still the same type of show, but there is something about the S1 finale that almost acts as a secret door that has you ready for everything that follows it.

I small part of me is really disappointed that they brought back the hunter just to explain him away as crazy. I understand the point is to ground some of the mystery as being the simplest explanation (so by turn, Kevin probably is nu-Jesus), but at the same time "let the mystery be" was part of what sold me on the show to begin with. It's much more powerful for him to just be a stranger who leads Kevin astray then vanishes.

They've already established that the government hate the GR.
In season 1, ATFEC ask Kevin if he wants them to kill the GR in Mapleton.
In season 2 they released Kevin after he get arrested with Patti's body because she was a GR member and they didn't care.
So using a drone when the GR attacked Miracle, a symbolically important town seems ok to me.

It's not. It's about grief, humanity and feels.
>>
>>81780026
I really enjoy it, but I would concede a lot of the criticism the show gets. It's complete emotional porn, which I love but others may find overbearing; and it flirts with a lot of huge themes with arguable success. But there is nothing else like it on tv right now. It's not an antihero study, crime drama, or period piece, no tits & gore, plot twists, bloated subplots, unnecessary episode lengths/counts. It's sad how refreshing it is to see a long-form drama that isn't the same thematically as every other show and doesn't fall prey to the structuring issues of 90% of other shows today. They really seem to have a vision here, though how much that works is up to you

Agreed about Kevin but I don't know, something about the fact that they weren't blood related but were still involved in the whole mysterious dealy made me like Tommy a lot. And that scene in Season 2, when he offers his hand to Nora when shit goes down on the Bridge. Add the music to the mix and holy shit, all my hair was standing up.

the book isn't that big to begin with.
>>
>>81781015

>>
>>81780874
The point being, you can only draw out "just ignore the setup, focus on characters" type drama for about 23 minutes. see; the twilight zone. After that, further explanation/expansion is needed. Hence the reason the season the twilight zone went to 50 minutes is commonly regarded as the worst season and returned to 24 minutes.
>>
>>81779845
Also the drone strike is not acknowledged by the government. The incident at miracle is regarded as a gas leak as indicated by the conversation between kevin and tom in the cruiser before they get lit up by dean
>>
>>81781195
the point of the show isn't to explain the departure though, it's to live through the consequences of it through the characters, who also will never get the explanation of why it happened. Explaining it to the audience adds nothing to the show and takes away everything from it. Why do you need an explanation?
>>
>>81781085
>when the shills start claiming BTFO when they have no counter arguments

... just stop. I watch this shit in hopes for unintentional hilarity and lindelof proving he didn't just fail upwards for almost two decades.
>>
>>81779845
the cost of the strike isn't worth even considering. The use of it on american soil is the more troubling part.
>>
I kinda want John to go back to being a "thug" tbqh. It made the last episode of S2, with him and Kevin, all the better.
>>
>>81781280
the problem with that argument is there is nothing organic about the characterization at all. Its rife with cheap plot devices that are all related to the departening in some fashion that it considers perfectly okay to never address, because the show is supposed to be about characters.

>>
>>81781513
Thanks, now fuck off.
>>
>>81781512
what ruined lost was going full dead-dream-magic in the last season because they'd written themselves into a corner.
>>
>>81781416
I don't get the hype for the Sopranos. Something tell me it's overrated by white people and associated nostalgia because they're triggered by the Wire's casting and superior quality.
>>
>>81781561
the show was the absolute height of spoonfeeding. as every time anything happened, tony was in with melfie hashing through it all.
>>
>>81781512
What ruined lost was the writers reading fan theories and literally saying "let's do that"
>>
>>81781609
they did the opposite though, they were under a directive to keep the audience guessing, so every time fan theories were correct, they had to go a new direction, then in the last season ended up with something no one wanted to think because it was fucking stupid.
>>
>>81781657
Either way, listening to the fans is poison for your show.
>>
>>81781195
twilight zone is nothing like this show though. You can't even compare the two. Leftovers doesn't reset after every episode. It takes its time establish characters and plot lines that don't need the mystery to be explained. We don't need to know why the departure happened to stay interested in Kevin dealing with his insanity. We don't need to know why the departure happened to stay interested in the community dealing with the guilty remnant, or why people decided to join. The explanation would add nothing to everything matt does.
>>
>>81781708
Twilight zone is mentioned because its basically proof you can't demand people ignore the plot setup for even 50 minutes, much less ten hours or thirty hours. It's just admitting you've got nothing and when the characters are weak, it's a mark of pure hackery.

I think what we're trying to tell you is that there is a thin line between explaining shit and pointless spoonfeeding, it's probably best not to have either one.
>>

i think leftovers is what he tried to do with lost but failed. He tried to say lost wasnt about the mysteries but almost every episode ended on a cliffhanger about the mysteries and major characters were motivated purely by the mysteries and they had the lost alternate experience all about the mysteries whereas in this everyone who cares about what the depature was is in a cult or dying religon.

Except they didn't do that. It was another scene showing the effects of cults on human beliefs and vulnerabilities. It showed how a cult can take everything away from you until you have nothing but your faith. The woman keeps going back because by the end she has nowhere to go. Without her faith she has no purpose.
>>
>>81782766
Who said I hate it? I enjoy it for reasons that aren't intended.
>>
>>81782737
no. if a black man is with a white woman. it will always be accused of being a liberal agenda.

maybe in a 1000 years if we've colonized other planets and live among an alien community racism between humans may be gone and people will not think twice when seeing a white woman with a black man.

to be fair, "muh characters" was blatantly a cop-out when they knew they had totally fucked the dog but were contractually obligated to act as if the show was still good.

Though not having as many edicts, like making sure characters have redeeming qualities and having to actually explain shit, like a competent writer would, was definitely lindelof's motivation here.

Great episode, it even made me forget why i hated the previous seasons, but the REMEMBER fags at the lake made me remember.

Still there is something about the atmosphere: even if I don't appreciate the parts the whole thing works for me, especially with the main theme playing in the background.

They have a shitton of stuff to go through in the remaining episodes and I'm thankful for the low ratings that will allow show to be concise.
>>
I love this show so much. I did a big rewatch before the premiere and it was great. I remember when they originally aired I thought the second season wasn't as good as the first but now I see the highs were just as high as the first and it was much more coherent and focused. TV lately has just felt like such a chore, then the premiere came out and it was so much fun just to see the Leftovers gang again.
