For me, good aesthetics can never be 'shitty' because aesthetics is inseperable/indistinguishable from the heart of it all.

Like, take Conan the Barbarian for instance.

One might argue that it's simplistic, and that the lines are mostly stock fantasy jibberish and grunts. But the aesthetics are so perfect and are, you come to realize, the substance of it. Further, you realize the film actually has a very fully realized philosophy, and that it is one with the aesthetics and thrust of the film as a whole.

Even his best Gattaca has a glaring plot hole in that it's not unreasonable to not send off Astronauts who have potential heart problems.
