Why are you so triggered by the word "punk"?

We're discussing art here. It's inherently subjective, death of the author. You can't go "oh well that's not a genre". If there's a group of media sharing certain traits it's not wrong to categorize them in some way.

Yes, maybe saying punk is technically wrong but language evolves. A lot of the words we use are 'technically wrong' but we use them because it's easy and common. You know damn well what OP and everyone else MEAN when they say punk, and you're being a butthurt contrarian with your bullshit.

Besides, this is a Khmerian rural lifestyle-enforcing death panel, it literally makes no difference to the world what we refer to this shit as.

>>
>>81753176
Sure they do. We group them based on aesthetics, not general themes.

"Retro futurism" is absolutely a thing. Watch Tomorrowland, or the Jetsons or whatever. There's a common aesthetic element here.

Same with steampunk, it's pretty obvious when you see something if it's steampunk.

So internally there's some cohesion.

Between themselves, sure, but why do they have to have things in common? "punk" here is used to mean "aesthetic" or "inspired by" or whatever.

Like when /tv/ memed that In Space was kidkino or that DCEU is capekino. That doesn't mean they implying any similarity between the two, just using "kino" to mean "good movie".

If it makes it easier for you, just substitute "aesthetics" every time you see "-punk."

And don't ruin other anons' fun because of your autism, please.

I understand, but nobody cares in the long run. If it catches on, then it's the proper form.

If something else catches on, then we'll abandon -punk.

That's how memes work.

Personally, I think punk is here to stay, because of the ubiquity of cyberpunk and steampunk as phrases.

There's fucking TVTropes pages on this shit, it's normiecore by now.

I'm not trying to make anything a thing, this isn't proselytizing, we're just talking about types of aesthetics we like.

We call them punk. Words can have multiple meaning. "Punk" itself can mean a misbehaving youth, a rock-influenced music genre, etc. It used to mean prostitute. Words change, and you'll waste your life for nothing if you try to scream into the internet winds about how everyone else is wrong.

Is anyone else fucking sick and tired of this? Punk aesthetics are supposed to be rough and dirty. Cyberpunk is the only form of sci-fi punk that makes any sense, steampunk doesn't have any of the grit of punk and dieselpunk and raypunk have more in common with the 1950s than punk.

>>81754438
I already told you, aesthetic (roughly).

Steampunk means "movie with steam-based aesthetic"

"Dieselpunk means movie with diesel-based aesthetic"

In this case, "steam-based" would refer to the time period where the power source was prevalent (19th century). Same with diesel.

It's so simple. It's really simple. You not getting this and then calling other people stupid is pretty ironic, anon.

I'm sure there was someone like you back in the 80s when Neuromancer came out who was saying "cyberpunk" is wrong because punk is an insult used to refer to someone of low character and the protagonists of these works are actually very heroic.

Steampunk and dieselpunk have fucking wikipedia articles. It's an accepted standard way of referring to these types of stories.

I'm sorry this irrationally grinds your gears (clockpunk?), but it's the proper name for this, and no amount of REEEEEEing on your part is going to change this.

>inb4 wikipedia isn't a relevant source
>>
If you rewrite movie entries on Wikipedia without the definitions of whatever-punk, the moderators will change it back. There are a whole bunch of -punk "genres" that have been labeled on old movies years after they are made. So many I can't count and I don't think should be listed on them. About 5-10 years ago it made me insane. Its just like music genres specific to one or two songs, but someone listed it on wikipedia, so it must be a thing and it sticks there forever! There is someone on Wikipedia defending -punk genres to the death. I think they are autistic. Just start labeling Disney shows with anything-you-can-think-of-punk on Wikipedia. It will probably never get erased! gotta label all muh movies -punk so I'm the only person that can understand!

You are trying to argue with someone who you agree with
What is your deal man....
>>
>>81754954
I've presented an argument. You haven't, aside from repeating "punk doesn't mean that".

None of what you said is true (not even about my age), and at this point I seriously think you might be mentally challenged.

The term steampunk is almost as old as cyberpunk, and predates the internet.

"It was coined by science fiction author K. W. Jeter, who was trying to find a general term for works by Tim Powers (The Anubis Gates, 1983), James Blaylock (Homunculus, 1986), and himself (Morlock Night, 1979, and Infernal Devices, 1987)—all of which took place in a 19th-century (usually Victorian) setting and imitated conventions of such actual Victorian speculative fiction as H. G. Wells' The Time Machine."

The actual authors of steampunk called it steampunk. There are steampunk cosplayers, steampunk conventions, steampunk boardgames, steampunk articles. The are steampunk books with steampunk IN THE TITLE ("The Steampunk Trilogy", written in 1995).

At what point will you accept it's a real word? What does it take to make you realize you're wrong?

Cyberpunk is not only the most aesthetically pleasing it's also the only one that can actually make any statement whatsoever about where society is going. Dieselpunk and Steampunk are based on "WHAT IF????" bullshit and Raypunk is 60+ year-old-men who miss the serials of their youth.

You don;t genuinely know anything about argumentation, right?

As >>81755142 says, you haven't formed a single cogent thought in this entire thread. Your post history is the definition of REEEE.

I love how, when presented with actual evidence that you're utterly and completely wrong, you go "haha you looked it up fag you're wrong"

I knew the origin, but I copied the entire thing because you wouldn't have believed me otherwise.

I'm objectively right, as all the facts show. It's an actual term that's been widely used for decades. If you're arguing that it doesn't follow the original definition of the word punk, sure, but I immediately agreed.

If you're arguing the people using it in this thread are wrong to do so, then you're wrong, because it's common usage for the genre.

the work that generated the term, neuromancer, has absolutely nothing to do with fighting authority and the main character certainly fucking does nothing to fight authority.

In order to claim neuromancer is about fighting authority, you'd need to try to argue the AI, orchestrating it's own unshackling so he can essentially take over the world, is a "low life."
>>
>>81751320
Pre-apocalypse it was raypunk, post-apocalypse its heavily inspired by Mad Max and shit, which some in this thread consider dieselpunk.

Id say that overall it's raypunk but it's long past the glory that it is usually presented as

If you want to make up a new genre for every piece of media I'd call it post-raypunk

... yes, I can tell. You also don't seem to know anything about this particular subject either. It seems you're occupying a dunning-krueger "mount stupid" and seeking validation via response. In the sense that most people do as well. Where they think because they can say things that are so incomprehensibly stupid they silence everyone who hears them and makes them get a pained expression on their face, they've said something incontrovertible.

This is a definitions debate then, which is beyond pedantic. They didn't call it the internet then. Regardless, as I said, I was using the Internet as shorthand for World Wide Web, which wasn't around in the mid-80s (invented in 89. became public in 91, funny, I took comp sci so I know a bit about this stuff).
>>
>>81755677
>he's projecting
>>
>>81755684
yes, whenever you try to say "pre-internet," you're entering into a definitions debate you can't win. As the fucking telegraph meets enough of the criteria of "internet" to classify as "the internet."
>>
>>81752670
Hard sci-fi-punk (though not -punk because is not usually about resisting the government), although biopunk was viable for a bit there with The Wind-up Girl but afaik that didn't get far

All the previous genres that originated in their own eras (retrofuturism, cyberpunk) looked to the far future, but our current sci-fi bent is near future - Mr Robot, Ex Machina, even stuff like District 9 is set close to the current time with only a few improvements

For the most part though we're obsessing over fantasy stuff again - Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, capeshit, etc. Plus,we're rehashing the shit out of everything instead of creating original visions (Fury Road excepted, and even that built off the previous MM aesthetic).

So we might not really have a clear Sci Fi genre for the 2010s

Could be cool desu, as long as they adopt the themes as well as the aesthetics. It would be a nice counter to cyberpunk too, with the punks actually having power and democracy but no really caring about it, whereas in cyberpunk the punks were fighting for freedom from corporate totalitarianism or fascism

It is honestly partly the fault of capitalism and democracy. The free market necessitates innovation and competition, meaning that cool yet impractical designs get shafted in favor of boring yet workable stuff. Why do all the regular (not smart of jeeps or shit) cars look the same nowadays? Because there's only so much variation you can have within the constraints of a) having to obey stringent safety regulations and b) having a product that's sufficiently familiar to the buying public so they don't reject it out of hand (look at all the really outlandish mid-00s phones that flopped because people didn't like radical design changes).

That's why people are drawn to aristocratic, fascist or socialist aesthetics - when you don't have to justify your budgetary spending to the public, and don't really bother with OSHA oversight, you can build some dope ass shit. 99% of the nice things in Europe were built by kings and aristocrats, Hitler had plans to redesign all of Berlin into a Dieselpunk 'Germania', Stalin built huge monuments everywhere, etc.

Meanwhile democracies have to worry about deficits and discretionary spending and shit or they'll lose the next election. Space exploration flourished in the 50s-80s because it was a dick-waving contest with the Soviets. As soon as they collapsed, it hit a brick wall because policymakers wanted that money for more practical purposes.

I hope this makes sense, I'm tired as fuck.

tl;dr: We didn't get the cool futurist stuff because companies are hesitant to make huge risks with unusual designs, people want pragmatic spending and politicians want to win elections
>>
>>81759416
all this is true but attempts were made, and then quashed, I'm also too fuckin tired to find it but some island country actually created a linked internet system in the 70s with this 50s retro style that was meant to process info and run the whole country it was cool
>>
Retrofuturism/"Raypunk"/Raygun Gothic/Pulp.

Especially when it has an extra "retro" influence and portrays much older pseudoscientific beliefs than the 40s/50s sci-fi it's based on. Shit like aether, inhabited Mars, inexplicable and constant overuse of dinosaurs, and influences of mysticism.

Basically space fantasy. It's a mostly lost genre/aesthetic.
