Kek he pulled hilarious faces in that episode.

Peter Capaldi is not American. Therefore, he uses the word "liberal" to mean "liberal" (free trade, deregulation, and government action only as a palliative not to control anything), which certainly does not describe him.

Why have Americans redefined "liberal" to mean the same thing as "left"? And why, having done so, do they always use them together anyway?

You people actually have a party that's both liberal and left, that Gary Johnson one. But rather than describing them as left-liberal, you come up with clumsy mouthfuls like "socially liberal, fiscally conservative", while using "left-liberal" just as a pointless synonym for "left".

Holmes is different. A different era, a different time, a different environment — he'd even had experience working with the show before writing his own story. As far as I know, Frank hadn't worked on Doctor Who in any medium before doing Forest, and even then, I'm sure he never expected to be made a part of the regular writing team; I'm sure we won't see him on Chibnall's team.

For the kind anon who was asking about my timeline placements last night: No, I rarely ever have an issue with Eyespider's placements, just this one time.

>>
>>81750125
Do we have an official /who/ companion list?
I'd like to see how nuwho compares to classic who.
And also where Wilfred ends up.
>>
>>81750277
I think you're misreading anon's point. Space Pirates is crap, but Holmes (obviously) got better.

There are of course a few contrarians who love it, if for no other reason than that Ian Levine called it the worst story in the history of Doctor Who. But they have to try really, really hard. The characters are all one-dimensional, except for two pirates that seem to be a failed attempt at the Holmesian double-act he'd later perfect but are here just annoying. Two/Jamie/Zoe don't even appear for large chunks of the story, and don't impact things when they do. It's a generic American-style SF plot, with nothing interesting added. There's a bizarre insistence on being hard-SF any time it could derail the momentum of the story, despite being space-fantasy everywhere else. (On top of all that, it's one of LC's first recons, before they knew what they were doing, and one of the few they never revisited, but you can't blame Holmes for that part.)

The only problem with anon's point is that The Space Pirates is Holmes' second script, and his first one, the Krotons, while certainly not his best work ever or the height of the Troughton era, is nowhere near as bad as Space Pirates.

I don't know how to set on up with a rating system and everything.

Also, on the companion thing, if Wilfred counts, because he's been with the Doctor on at least two journeys in the Tardis and a prominent character, which also includes Jackie Tyler in this.
Does Grace count, if she was only in one movie? Do we count the books?
This could get complicated.

>Fans will discover the close-up shot of Capaldi’s eyes from the 50th special, The Day of the Doctor, was actually the start of his own regeneration.

Wasn't it very heavily implied that when he leaves for a moment in Deep Breath, that's when he does that?
>>
>>81750968
Not "heavily" but he changes the TARDIS colour after that so it's just logically where it could fall.
>>
>>81750846
Just checked the PDF, and yeah, it seems to be broken like anon was complaining about.

Scroll to the around the middle, page 748, click on the [1335] footnote, and it takes me to the right footnote on page 913, but then click on the [1335] backlink and it takes me to page 1186 instead of back to 748.

But if that's the only problem, plenty of ebook readers have a history/back button (even Apple's one does), so you could just ignore the backlinks.
>>
>>81750968
That's the part that proves their "source" is a GB thread that's not even a spoiler thread but a hypothetical discussion about what would be cool.
>>
>>81750948
Oh dear.
Well someone better than me is going to have to make this list.

>>
>>81750837
Rather than have our own big autism-flaring argument about who does and doesn't count as a companion, why not rely on someone else who's already done all those arguments and come up with a list that makes nobody at all happy but at least it's there? I'm sure TARDIS Data Core has one.

Why that's a problem either way? If one book counts as one episode, then Ruby Duvall or Alan Turing is the same as Lynda-with-a-Y or (assuming one classic story also counts as an episode) Samantha Briggs.

Really, all of the tricky issues already come up just in TV NuWho. Kazran Sardick had multiple TARDIS trips but only one episode; Craig Owens was a recurring character but had no TARDIS trips; Canton Delaware was in two episodes but only one story; etc.

>>81751154

http://tardis.wikia.com/wiki/Companion

Scroll down to the giant template-of-templates at the bottom.

But they break things down into "multi-story", "single adventure", "multi-adventure", and "narratively ambiguous" subcategories, so we'd still need to decide which of their subcategories count as real companions.

I do like that they count "John and Gillian" as a single companion. That's pretty funny, and we'd never come up with something that autistic ourselves. I wonder what the argument behind that was?
>>
>>81751654
>I wonder what the argument behind that was?
The characters always appear together, without exception, except for one exception. So forget the original question, let's argue about that one exception. We can't canonically prove that the exception is John, so therefore, John and Gillian can't be split into separate pages. Even though the same exception is the canonical proof that John's last name is Who.

I love TDC, especially CzechOut.

Nine cared a lot for Rose but as a lover, not sure. He wanted to protect her, and Rose made him feel like he was worth something and not just K/D Ratio 20 Billion - 0, and Ten, well, Ten loved everyone except for Martha.

I feel sorry for Martha. Can't even call herself the best friend the Tenth doctor ever had because Donna stole that away from her within like two episodes.

Yes, but the Mirror said she'd been recast, which never happened.

>And Patterson Joseph was offered Eleven.
Yes, but the Mirror printed that he'd signed his contracts and was preparing for the role.

That's the kind of shit they do. About one in ten times, there's a grain of truth to the rumour they heard, but even then, they embellish it to the point where what they print isn't true anyway.

For example, the "Capaldi fired" thing—at least the first time, they probably did have a source who heard that some executive at the BBC wanted Capaldi fired or something, but they turned that into "Capaldi has been fired", which never happened.

Blood control matrix. Big, red, threatening, and certainly not friendly. But, really, it wasn't threatening at all. In reality it was more like a wounded dog snarling at an even bigger dog. Of course, I like tricks as much as the next guy — if the next guy happens to be a guy who likes tricks — but when you're tricking people into thinking that you've got a loaded gun pointed at their faces, well, that's where I draw the line. I drew with Houdini and I drew it with this lot. So, I went ahead and SMACKED the button, OH YES! Didn't do anything, though — blood control has its limits. It could never really be fatal; survival instincts are too strong. No real harm ever came from hypnotism. W~ell, I say no real harm. Jamie once got hypnotized by this street performer in Sudan, made him think he was a rattlesnake. You've ever been bitten by a man in a kilt? Not pretty. ..Sorry, where was I? Oh, right, blood control, BLOOD CONTROL! Didn't do anything in the end. But that's why they had a great big threatening button, try and keep up, anon.
>>
>>81753388
but why would a blood control device have a huge button like that which disables the blood control as soon as it's pressed?
>>
>>81753388
And now I want to see the episode with that Jamie story.

>DOCTOR: Jamie! Jamie! What are you doing?
>ZOE: *laughs* He thinks he's a rattlesnake!
>DOCTOR: Zoe, oh! Don't just stand there giggling! Help me wrestle him to the ground! (as they begin wrestling with Jamie) Oh, my word, my my my.
>ZOE: Shall I flip him over, Doctor?
>DOCTOR: Oh, yes, Zoe, please. Then I can snap him out of it with a firm smack on the bottom. (they do so)
>JAMIE: Eh, wha' happened? Why are ye sitting on me, ye daft lass?
>DOCTOR: I really must teach you to resist such mental trickery one of these days. But first, I would quite like a hat like the one that fakir was wearing.
>>
>>81753415
It doesn't disable it, it activates it, triggering the next suggestion that's been programmed in. It only disables it in this case because the next suggestion is suicide, and human survival instincts are too strong for that to work.

The only question is whether the Sycorax knew that human survival instincts were too strong. If so, why actually program in something they know isn't going to work, when that wasn't at all necessary for the bluff? If not, how do they know so little about blood control and how it works on different species when that seems to be central to their SOP?

HOLY SHIT BASED KID DOCTOR IS BACK
>>
Why didn't "The Doctor" just fly his blue box away from the dullest franchise in the history of British science fiction franchises? Seriously each series following the renegade timelord and his rotating cast of spunky young women as they fight assorted villains has been indistinguishable from the others. Aside from the gloomy imagery, the series’ only consistency has been its lack of excitement and ineffective use of special effects, all to make science unscientific, to make action seem inert.

Perhaps the die was cast when Moffatt vetoed the idea of Capaldi directing the series; he made sure the series would never be mistaken for a work of art that meant anything to anybody?just ridiculously profitable cross-promotion for Sherlock. The Doctor Who series might be anti-Christian (or not), but it’s certainly the anti-Star Trek series in its refusal of thought-provoking dialogue, scientific principles and moral quandary. No one wants to face that fact. Soon, thankfully, they will no longer have to.

>a-at least the classic series were good though r-right
"No!"
The writing is dreadful; the show was terrible. As I watched, I noticed that every time the lead character should have died, the writers insisted instead that the character "regenerated."

I began marking on the back of an envelope every time that trope was repeated. I stopped only after I had marked the envelope at least a dozen times. I was incredulous. Doctor Who is so governed by cliches and dead metaphors that it has no other style of plot. Later I read a lavish, loving review of Doctor Who by the same Moffatt. He wrote something to the effect of, "If these kids are watching Doctor Who at 11 or 12, then when they get older they will go on to watch Graham Norton." And he was quite right. He was not being ironic. When you watch "Doctor Who" you are, in fact, trained to watch Graham Norton.

Kek.

But really, you could make more out of that one.

The first couple times they at least tried to be creative about it, saying he was "renewed" or "forced to take a new face". But pretty soon they stopped even pretending it was anything other than using the same death-cheating copout over and over again, just calling it "regeneration" each time as if that were an explanation, and eventually even using the same 2005-vintage CGI to try to distract us.

>Doctor Who will have a new time travelling companion in the Christmas Special – in the shape of the first Time Lord.
>Harry Potter star David Bradley will reprise his role as William Hartnell’s original Doctor, which he previously played for the BBC sci-fi show’s 50th drama An Adventure In Space and Time.
>He will flank Peter Capaldi’s 12th incarnation in this year’s festive outing, following the departure of Pearl Mackie as Bill Potts at the end of this series (despite rave reviews after her debut on Saturday).
>In the plot, the first Doctor has to help the current one play out his last mission in the Tardis. The pair must work together to save home planet Gallifrey by moving it to another dimension.
>Fans will discover the close-up shot of Capaldi’s eyes from the 50th special, The Day of the Doctor, was actually the start of his own regeneration.

If Russell T Davies was actually allowed to continue the Rose/Tentoo plot:

>They grow their own TARDIS with the piece of TARDIS coral from the deleted scene (that Davies considers canon)

>Because the Time Lords are back, travel through different realities is possible again ["It used to be easy. When the Time Lords kept their eye on everything, you could hop between realities, home in time for tea."]
>12 crashes his TARDIS in to theirs through some manner of plot bullshittery

>They're called to Gallifrey, like how Four was in 'The Deadly Assassin'
>After a double Doctor and companion tag team, they save Gallifrey for like the millionth time and absolutely nobody is surprised

Absolutely fantastic story, I see why everyone loved it. Just making sure I understand it, Mondas would have been destroyed due to the conversion, but the Doctor saved it by making them do the propulsion, setting it on its path seen in the Tenth Planet, right? anyway, overall I'd recommend it, good pacing and characters, good plot.

Next up on the list is ... ish. What are /who/s thoughts on Spare Parts and ...ish

if an actress could do a good job at the role, why not? quit being so triggered about it.

Why do you assume that if a female Doctor is cast the only possible motive could be pandering?
>>
Ramona didn't regen into a man in that one episode where she regenerated a bunch of times

Why should the Doctor?
>>
>>81760174
Why should the Doctor regenerate into a man? I agree!

But the Master has, and the Corsair has, and the General has, obviously it's something Time Lords do sometimes.

Not in classic Who
>>
>>81760245
But the 13th Doctor isn't part of Classic Who either.
>>
>>81760245
It's all the one show, Doctor Who.
>>
Seeing as Chibnall and Tennnat seem to have a pretty good relationship after 3 series of broadchurch id be hard pressed not to believe that they haven't at least toyed with the idea or had some talks about getting him involved in Series 11 some how. I think Tennant is done with the Doctor at least until 2023. But could he appear as another character? Maybe his half human counter part.
>>
...the show literally got rid of time travel for a period and it still worked. So for anyone arguing that a female doctor would change the format/formula of the show too much, that's the bar that's been set. You have to justify a penis being more integral to doctor who than time travel.
>>
>>81760214
Also, so did Drax in one audio.

He'd be much older, he already looked a lot different in the 50th anniversary. If anything he'd be back as Tentoo because he ages like a human does, so any signs of aging would be justified.

A device used by the Master, a laser screwdriver was a device unlike the Doctor's sonic counterpart. It was not only larger but bulkier and generally used as a lethal, killing laser weapon instead of a multi-functioning tool.
