That's all hindsight talking. The main lesson to take from either the book or movie is that sometimes people reach that point and shut themselves off from all help, and then it doesn't matter what you do for them, they're going to end their life. Bullying is a theme, but they repeat in the show that ultimately Hannah is responsible for her choices, even if those people on the tapes contributed to it.

Loved the show, hated all the cliffhangers. Literally none of the stories were capped off.

this show portrays depression in a totally inaccurate way. with real depression, there is no cause and effect. you don't feel bad for a reason. you don't want to die for a reason. you just want to die. no one can change that.

I would dispute that. Sometimes there is a clear cause. Sometimes there is a shitty pointless cause that still somehow triggers it. Sometimes there is nothing at all. Depression manifests in lots of different ways and can appear for lots of different reasons (including no reason whatsoever).

I agree that this show didn't really portray depression very well though, or at least it didn't really show any of the telltale signs that I've come across. There was no withdrawal from social group, no real isolation. No feelings of worthlessness or self-loathing. No lethargy, no anhedonia. I never really bought that Hannah was depressed, I don't know if that's the fault of the actor or the writers.

I think it's partly down to the format. You aren't waiting a week in between episodes which means there isn't that gradual downward spiral - it all happens really quickly (assuming you binged it) which makes it feel false.
