I generally agree with the idea of Shinji as being a realistic character, but there are times when he just acts like such a little bitch. Like when he completely refuses to fight the other eva because there's a pilot in it, despite the fact that it's an angel and it's going to kill a shit ton more people (including himself) if he doesn't do anything about it. And then he goes and throws yet another shitfit when Gendo takes over and does the job for him.

I sort of rationalize that stuff in my head with part of Shinji's character being that he is young and selfish. He prioritizes his immediate assessment of the situation to the more adult one because he doesn't understand the gravity of it and refuses to because he's a dumb kid. It makes him less relatable sure but I don't see it as unrealistic.
