It's been a while since I read them, but I think the books did a much better job of characterizing Denathor. He wasn't a totally bad guy at heart, if anything he was doing the best that anyone could to keep Gondor above water. But ultimately he was a victim of Sauron's corruption.
In the movie, he shows up and is just this pouting, grumpy despot, and we don't really find out why he's acting that way, even in the extended edition. Boromir gives us more expositoin as to the plight of Gondor, and Denethor became almost a cartoon villain by the end of ROTK.

That exact solution is suggested at the council of Elrond in the book, Gandalf or one of the elves basically says that it would eventually be found again, it's only delaying the inevitable. Gandalf I think says that their council is not to deal with the ring and Sauron just for their lifetimes, but to try and get rid of them permanently.
