Yeah the show seemed sold on the idea that there'd be this mystery about why people just suddenly vanished, yet the entire show just focuses on mundane day to day of everyone.

The major event, the vanishing of tons of people, is just something that goes on in the background as some major catastrophe that people are mentally trying to cope with.

Nothing supernatural is going on in the show and it's entirely about the people that are 'leftover'. I tried watching a bit of season 1 before getting bored and just looking up what happened in the synopsis. Made me loathe the characters all the more.

They spent inordinate amount of time on acting like they were going to answer some of those questions, so it came across as a bit of a cock tease.

I get why someone would want to use such a fantasy element, it makes it easier to talk about the people that survive a disaster than if they used something like a terrorist attack, but spending so much time acting like they were going to explain the fantasy element to just not do so felt kinda bullshitty.

the first episode has, what would be, in a competent work, decent foreshadowing of mystery investigation complete with recognizable actors cast in roles that would turn out to only have one line.

the show definately tries to use the happening as a hook and then proceeds to just ignore it in favor of milling around with mildly altered lost characters.
