I'm still annoyed when he raged at Gaiman because his book got nominated by the Sad Puppies even though a) Gaiman had no idea that this was happening, b) Gaiman is a very open Leftist with no sympathies to the Sad Puppies, and c) any of his books would be nominated anyway simply because he's Neil Gaiman. It came off as Sandifer attacking the very people the Hugos stood for, and possibly did more to help the Sad Puppies than anything. Plus, for all their prestige, the Hugos are just another awards show, and making so many angry blog posts about that seems like looking at the small picture. His obsession with Vox Day just felt weird and made both sides of the argument seem like loons with too much time on their hands.

>>81681152
I hate using that word, but Gillen's writing comes off as pretentious. Wicked and the Divine, Phonogram, and Uber are utterly joyless reads that seek to give you a message rather than an actual story. Just seems like Gillen aiming for high concepts, but having too immature a writing style to really deliver on those ideas.

This is the same non-news already posted earlier.

The Sun doesn't even have a source, they're just quoting the Mirror (plus a month-old tweet by a music journalist).

Meanwhile, the Mirror article they're using at their source is full of nonsense.

For example:
>Bookies Ladbrokes stopped taking bets on him becoming the next Time Lord after a huge rush from punters.
Well, that's true, but that happened weeks ago—and since then, they reopened betting, then suspended it again because of an even bigger rush on Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who's still the favourite at every bookie site, with Kris vying for fourth place with David Harewood and Natalie Dormer. So, if this is actually meaningful at all, it argues against their own headline.

Sure, I wouldn't have said I can see your point and I'm not 100% sure I disagree with you if I didn't see any nuance there.

>I'd expect Phil to at least be aware enough to point out the multiple perspectives here and the aspects that could be questionable, even if he himself doesn't actually find anything wrong with it, but instead all you get is him literally calling the word choice "magnificent".
Again, I think the problem here is not that Phil's "on the wrong side", but that he's being shallowly reactive—he's looking at what people on Twitter are complaining about, which is not his (self-appointed) job.

And getting back to my original point, I think Phil's moderation-seeking position is a perfectly valid one, but it's a strange position for someone to stand on a soapbox and shout about.

Gallifrey Falls No More was a Gallifreyan landscape painting made using stasis cube technology, depicting the fall of Arcadia, Gallifrey's second city, on the final day of the Last Great Time War. The painting was believed to have two conflicting titles: No More, or Gallifrey Falls. However, according to the curator of the National Gallery, the painting's full title was actually Gallifrey Falls No More.

'The Pilot' is the name both fandom and the BBC have been using for decades to refer to the original version of 'An Unearthly Child', before they revised and reshot it. This change will make it a huge pain in the arse for anyone who ever wants to buy the actual pilot episode on DVD or search for information about it online again. And trolling our own fans is hilarious. Notice that we've also called an episode 'Thin Ice'? Yeah, just wait for my last Christmas special, it's called 'The Runaway Bride'. Well that episode was fucking awful.
At least we'll get ghetoo cybermen at some point.
I may skip this season anyway, though, guys. Bill did nothing for me and the premiere tried so unnecessarily hard to attract newcomers that it didn't even bother being engaging.

So, where should I start with the audios this year? Haven't taken the dive yet, but I hear they're generally good.

>While it was a good show on its own right, it was an appetizer during the off-season between Who episodes.
Yeah, having a full season of SJA every year, and of TW some years, made it feel almost like Doctor Who was a year-round thing, not just a thing that came around for 3 months and then went away again like any other UK TV series.

Still, Lis got in 4-1/2 series, which is more than most Doctors.

>Can't remember where abouts i stopped but I think it was just before that little girl came about. Skye was it?
You stopped just before the end. Sky joins at the start of S5, and the show ends in the middle of S5.

(I ask because I need to know whether to begin preparations for pitying a foo.)
>>

I tried rewatching some episodes, but I just couldn't go on. I know it's just a kids show and I've never even met Lis Sladen, but seeing some scenes that were meant to be heartwarming before she died are too fucking bittersweet for me. Especially the later seasons where I go "But she looked so full of spirit and not sick at all, why the fuck did she have to die?".
>>
>>81683296
What didn't you like about Asbill? I went in thinking I would have white knuckles all the way through. But she wasn't nearly as bad as when she appeared in that short clip beginning of last year.

Not sure what I said to get that reaction. I would've gotten into them earlier, but I had 26 seasons of catching up to do.

It wasn't unnecessary, DW's ratings are in the shitter. And it seems like it might have worked, there's a lot more buzz about the show than there was last year.

She just didn't appeal to me as a character, and Moffat's been doing the whole "let's have the companion dominate the narrative" thing again. It's just gotten old at this point. The dialogue was also subpar and the plot this episode was paper-thin. Has all the makings of a tired showrunner.

NuWho was just when I was getting into British TV as a whole, so I was a little pissed that I had to wait nine months for a new season compared to three for American shows. Torchwood and SJA helped ease that wait for me, and probably a lot of other Americunts as well.

I enjoyed it until halfway into Matt Smith's series then it just became shit. Moffat is a terrible writer who caters to the fanbase instead of the original theme and story set by the other writers. Even when he does stick to his own story (Sherlock) after a few series he ends up repeating shit and recycling overused storylines like some autistic OCD kid.

David Tennant was an amazing doctor, not least because of Russell T. Davies writing. In fact, Broadchurch is better than this overhyped shill TV program. Matt Smith also had a great spark, and under a better writer could have really shone.

I rewatched a bunch of it recently. Once you get past the sad, it really is a good show.

I was struck by how far out of their way they went to tie in with the Big Finish SJS audios. Even if Big Finish weren't such a niche market in the first place, how much of the SJA target audience was going to remember something made for an adult audience five years earlier?

Alright clearly I upset you somehow. Was it because of my bad first impression of series 10? Don't get me wrong, I wish it the best, and we're both well within our respective rights to have differing opinions of it. That said it's becoming very clear that Moffat's wellspring has dried up. Here's hoping Chibnall might pick up the slack next year.

Shame about Capaldi's departure as well. I've heard he wanted to stay longer.
>>
>>81683687
So he won't return for fear of Colin eating him?
>>
>>81683296
I recommend to pick holes that you like and fill them. You can find out what 6 was up to after Trial and before Time and the Rani. You can continue with 8. Etc. Otherwise, I would just recomend the audios as something to do when you're trying to fall asleep or when you are in transit.

This is useful for the hole filling
http://www.eyespider.org.uk/drwho/cb/list.html

Otherwise, the main range and any general set of audios can be enjoyed in order of release as that's how they're supposed to be listened to. Honestly, I would just recommend listening to all of the GOAT stories and then you can move on when you've finally finished that. There's too much audio honestly.

He's been recycling ideas and character arcs. His "I'm the girl who met the Doctor, this is my story" approach has been present as far back as The Girl in the Fireplace and Blink.
It would be fine but they're almost always fundamentally similar characters.

There's also the fact that Moffat has a bad habit of forgetting how characters he's created work, and he seems to generally have a hard time juggling large season-wide arcs in general. He's great with small-scale standalone episodes, though. Heaven Sent and Listen were both fantastic.

That said, showrunners, being human get tired and start to run out of ideas. It happens. It's nothing to even be ashamed of; Moffat's had a nice long run, even longer than average. The time has come to move on, though, and this first episode of the series hasn't given me much optimism.

K9 breaking down and Aunt Lavinia dying and leaving her the house were both straight from SJS.

Meanwhile, there's flashback stuff to the 80s and 90s, but they almost always avoid 2002-6, which is the only way they could avoid contradicting the audio series (short of actually continuing it and resolving its cliffhangers).

And the ambiguous way they talked about her past relationships (or lack thereof). School Reunion implies pretty strongly that she never even looked at a man because she knew they'd never compare to the Doctor, but SJA sounds a lot more like she looked but never found anyone, which fits a lot better with SJS (and the BBC novels, but the Virgin novels are still impossible to reconcile).

There's also a couple offhand mentions of someone named James from her past with no explanation of who he is, which is kind of weird, but I'm pretty sure it was Phil and Gareth giving a shoutout to James Stevens from Who Killed Kennedy, who gets mentioned a few times as her original mentor in SJS S2 (which was written by the same guy who wrote that novel).

>>
>>81684685
And Moffat failed to blend a decent or even creative plot into it. He's done that before, and he fucked it up this time. Hell, Rose and its mannequin monsters did a more entertaining job of doing what the Pilot did.

Style over substance is a bad thing, but removing style entirely and turning your episode into a strict tool isn't any better. Shows lazy writing as well. Very paint-by-numbers episode, and I hope Moffat doesn't make a habit of it this season.

Any references to old series?

How was Bill?

Any hints or beginnings of season wide arcs?

Not too bad, final ratings will be around 7 mil

>season wide arc
There's something in the basement
12's been at the university for over 50 years, we don't know why he's had to keep himself grounded
>>

if they want to get a brown girl at least get one thats pleasing to look at, she's so terribly ugly

-Don't know what a skinny is?

-Yes quite a few, don't really see how this ep can be called a jumping on point it had tonnes of continuity to Classic and nuwho

-She was actually alright, not amazing but a really solid intro. Think Martha in Smith and Jones, lots of potential (hopefully not wasted like Martha though)

-A couple, firstly The Vault is an obvious arc (The Doctor keeping something in the basement); then there's Bill's relationship with Heather that might get revisited; and why The Doctor decided to come to the university in the first place

I think it's actually refreshing to have a companion that's not a top Qt/supermodel again like Donna or Rose. Thought I agree that if they wanted to relaunch the show to normies they should have casted someone less hideous

These may not be the real ratings. Everyone on GB is unsure.

The skinny, aka the details, how the episode went, ect.

Any allusions to what might be in the Vault? Maybe his next regeneration, or The Master?
>>

all we know is that 12's protective of whatever's in there. When the water monster went down to the basement, he wanted to know if it was after the vault or just wanted to kill them

If you don't know how to protect yourself against adware, there are two basic options:

>Dailymotion. Don't use the search engine on the site; just google "dailymotion doctor who the pilot". Generally not the first place it gets uploaded, but it should be there by now, and it's a harmless site.

>Use a front-end program, like the Exodus add-on for Kodi, to watch stuff on the real streaming sites without having to know where they are or deal with all the cruft.

Third of the night isn't too bad right? even Britain's Got Talent had smaller numbers that doctor who used to at its peak, I don't think they're just damage controlling when they say viewing behaviours have changed
>>
>>81685762
The fact that fewer than 1 in 7 people watch non-timeshifted TV, and yet people still pretend these ratings mean anything.

For anyone except obsessed fans or old people who don't know how to work a DVR or iPlayer, what reason is there for anyone to watch anything live? (Except competition shows where viewers can vote or the like.)
>>
I'm in the middle of series 6 and its pretty awkward as to how much gay pandering shit is in the show for no reason. It wouldn't be a big deal but it's very nudge nudge dude gay people. Does moffat stop this? At least with rtd, it was a bit less out of touch.

Hey anons :)

>>
>>81685911
>even Britain's Got Talent had smaller numbers that doctor who used to at its peak
Not quite, unless you're counting specials rather than sustained ratings.

S1 had the highest overnights ever for NuWho, and it averaged only 7.3M.

The numbers you've seen closer to 9M (in S4) are final, not overnights—they include 7-day time-shifted views and iPlayer views.
>>
>>81685938
the paternosters are very blatant 'dude gay lmao' and never get better
they haven't been seen since the first episode of S8 though
gay people are still around - the newest companion is gay and it was relevant to the plot but they were pretty tactful about it imo
>>
>>81686025
For reference, S7 averaged 7.5M finals, but only 5.5M overnights. And with L+7 views increasing about 10%/year and iPlayer views more like 50%/year, you can expect the gap to be a lot wider this year.
>>
>>81686018

3 > 4 > 1 > 2

The plot actually starts moving in DC3 and 4 which puts 1 & 2 to shame. The overarching 'Doom Coalition' plot should have started a lot earlier and makes the earlier stuff, especially DC1 feel like filler.
>>
>>81686060
I've only listened to DC1. Do they ever actually explore the Eleven's mental condition in depth?
>>
>>81686085

In DC1, I thought The Eleven was a pretty mediocre villain. He gets upstaged by The Sonomancer in DC2. He gets a lot more backstory in DC3 and in DC4 he's actually really threatening and a great villain that I hope we'll see again.

In short: Yes, in DC3 and 4.

4.64m overnight is pretty good actually. Final figure will be around 7.5m. Also figures will no doubt get higher when Simm's Master re-appears, and heading towards the finale and the regeneration.

As a quick easy comparison:

Tennant's run averaged final viewing figures of 7.77m. Matt Smith 7.55m. Capaldi is averaging 7.1m so far.
>>
>>81686132
Yeah DC1 and DC2 and 3/4 of DC3 was pretty disappointing but DC4 was pretty good.

It's from the trailer. No idea what's going to happen. People are saying it's a fake-out but I think it looks too far for that. I'm almost expecting Capaldi to actually regenerate into somebody else, just for an episode, before some sort of reset button is hit on the whole world.
>>
>>81686390

we already know 12's regeneration isn't going to be a normal one, he's going to hold it back or something
>>

It's from the Coming Soon... trailer.

So we don't know what causes it, or if that is even The Doctor.

Nick Briggs:

The issue of skewing opportunity to favour unrepresented groups in any creative field is a really difficult one. We have an ongoing discussion about this in Big Finish circles. We are certainly very keen for there to be more female writers, for example. But we are a small company with tough deadlines, so actually managing to get scripts from anyone in the first place has to be the major concern. That said, I’m very mindful of this issue and the justified strength of feeling from people who feel under-represented, so I am certainly making efforts to change things. I think there’s a very valid argument that like prefers like, so I think there’s some truth in the fact that I may unconsciously be drawn towards people who are like me - white, male, etc. That’s certainly not a conscious choice of mine. So I hope that the more I consider this issue, the more capable I will be of doing something more positive about it. But, as I say, because time is always short and deadlines are always tight, my major concern is just getting the best stuff out there. I don’t ever want to be in a situation where I would have to put a brilliant idea or script to one side because the sex or race of the writer didn’t meet certain criteria.
>>
>>81686475

I'd take anyone if it meant we didn't get another Dalek Invasion of Earth rip-off script from Briggs.
>>
WHOA JOHN SIMM IN THE TRAILER TOO HOLY SHIT

I wonder where in his timeline this story is going to take place? It'll have to be after he disappeared with Rassilon in The End of Time but before he regenerates into Missy, right?
>>
>>81686475
>I think there’s a very valid argument that like prefers like, so I think there’s some truth in the fact that I may unconsciously be drawn towards people who are like me - white, male, etc

lmao why did nick briggs just out himself as a racist sexist bigot
>>
>>81686536
It doesn't have to be. The Doctor has been scooped up from right in the middle of his timeline to meet future Doctors before, so the Master could just as easily.

But it does seem like the most obvious choice. We don't know what the Master was doing after he got sent back into the timelock, while we have a pretty good idea of what he was doing while, say, he was setting up his Saxon persona. Also, taking him from later in his incarnation is a great explanation for why the actor looks older.
>>
>>81686475
>But we are a small company with tough deadlines, so actually managing to get scripts from anyone in the first place has to be the major concern
Meanwhile one of their most prolific writers was discovered from a competition and they'd have dozens, or even hundreds, more fans who are gagging at the opportunity to write for them.

The rest of the post is kinda mature of him to say though.

Not to mention how many of their other writers are either holdovers from previous ranges with open submissions (the novels, and the semi-pro audio and video stuff), or people brought in as personal contacts of such holdovers.

I almost enjoyed it as much as the Eleventh Hour.
>>
>>81686656
I thought it was great and far better than The Eleventh Hour

New thread when?
>>
>>81686655
Maybe it's because many of those writers have experience in churning out Doctor Who work at a quick pace, and it's hard to find up and coming writers who will dedicate that amount of time to a tie-in work while keeping up to that schedule.

Briggs could hire a new writer every now and then though.
>>
>>81686631
That was almost certainly an inside joke at Nick Briggs' expense.

When asked what his favourite Dalek line from the classic series was, Briggs said "Seek! Locate! Destroy!" from Destiny. But the actual line in Destiny is "Seek! Locate! Exterminate!", while "Seek-Locate-Destroy" is the name of a Blake's 7 episode.

And then Moffat lets him do "Seek! Locate! Destroy!" in a scene set in the middle of the Dalek-Movellan War from Destiny.

>Missy

If she is the Master, she should still be referred to as the Master.
>>
>>81686655
Honestly drives me crazy how ignorant of this they seem to be. I understand why a company wouldn't want to have to deal with unsolicited scripts, but don't then turn around and say "oh it's so hard to even get anything written". Especially when, as you point out, the entire EU's foundation is essentially open submissions. And they have recent evidence that it works well for their company, in Matt Fitton.

I wonder if they'll even bother doing the memorial comp this year.
>>
>>81686875
They've obviously gotten themselves into a bind in that everyone at Big Finish who knows anything about scripts is so busy writing scripts (and, in many cases, also producing and/or directing) that they don't have time to handle submissions, much less work with new writers.

So they need some kind of filter between the slush pile and the overworked people. If they can't afford to do that the professional way, maybe do what the novels did: hire a fan to be a "freelance editor", who basically gets next to nothing, but with a bonus for each script he passes up that actually gets made.
>>
>>81687052
Yeah, that makes sense. I do know that going through slush piles would be a hassle and fairly labour-extensive. Obviously they wouldn't be able to keep submissions open all the time, but maybe a couple of weeks every few months. The memorial thing seemed like a good testing grounds. Because it's only for a Short Trip so the submissions aren't as long, and you can then ask the winner(s) to do a full-submission and see if you want to give them a contract. I wonder if they even considered doing that with the winner

I think it just bothers me in particular because I'd dive at the chance to work for BF (I did a submission for the short trips last year, and will submit again if they continue it this year) and I feel like discovering new writers is such a positive thing the EU can do.
>>
>>81687198
Wow, you're cross-posting my posts into the old thread too. You're like the string holding the tin cans together for me and this anon.
>>
>>81687182
They really needed to work this out before they got this big. Software companies that don't plan out how they're going to deal with growth in advance either don't get investors, or get their upper management replaced by the investors, but in most other industries nobody thinks that way so startups grow until they're too unwieldy for their original structure and then they just collapse.

Also, ideally they should have done it before NuWho, when nobody was thinking of Big Finish as "the EU" in the first place. Part of the reason they got so many up-and-coming TV writers and novelists writing for Virgin and early BF was that it was "real Doctor Who", and even for writers who had a hard time believing that, it was at least as real as Doctor Who was ever going to get again
