Mad Men beats it by a hair, though they're almost companion series. It's tighter w/ Weiner exerting more creative control and writing the overwhelming majority of episodes, it feels like one well thought-out vision perfectly executed. Sopranos is a little looser and more meandering with a lot of different cooks in the kitchen. Still the best two series ever, unrivaled character work.

Sopranos is absolute tzrash compared to Mad Men.

There are episodes of Mad Man that rival the finest tv shows ever aired. And im talking only about episodes. As a whole Mad Men is in the top three of the best television ever produced.

Sopranos cant even beat shit like Six Feet Under or Breaking Bad, lol.

It's funny how you pretend Mad Men is this super focused oeuvre of a visionary when it meanders, scatterbrained much more than The Sopranos. While The Sopranos had different people directing and writing, David Chase's oversight was felt during the entire run. The only point in the series where the plot seems unfocused and aimless is during season 4, and even that is some people's favorite season.
I can't agree with you because you're wrong.

The show has proven extremely prophetic socially but that was never the point. The story resonates with the human experience. Time frame has little to do with the story, idiot.

Trolling?

The Wire doesn't really do anything except beat the viewer over the head with each season's slightly different version of "this institution (PD, drug cartel, schools, etc.) is dysfunctional and the people within it have little control against that dysfunction."

The Sopranos is about so much more and is much richer because of it. It roundly addresses the human condition from day-to-day and long-term perspectives and a variety of personal viewpoints. And the characters are much more fleshed-out and lifelike, shown in myriad situations that elicit a wide range of emotional states, variously resulting in personal growth and stagnation, in some cases. By contrast, the characters in the Wire are more cliched and simpler--you mostly see them as employees, and little else. Because the Wire really doesn't do anything other than convey its themes about institutional dysfunction, it has no use for its characters other than being vessels to help show how the PD, schools etc. are dysfunctional.

In all, The Sopranos is simply much richer thematically and in terms of characterization. The Wire's thematic portrayal is quite repetitive and simple by comparison, as is its characters, although it's still better than 90% of other TV.
>>
>>81673253

Not him, but throwing around vague buzzwords isnt very compelling.

Americans love mafia shit, its that simple. Most Europeans dont, since we dont have the mafia (apart from the Italians).

In all honestly I understand why people like the Sopranos, but its nothing special. Not the writing, not the characters and certainly not the acting.

In reality its just a window into the Italian mob's day to day life, which again you Americans adore.

The Wire is complex and well written. Details and LE jargon are dry, if you dont like that sort of thing.

>In all, The Sopranos is simply much richer thematically and in terms of characterization.

I bet that sounded clever in your head.

For whatever reason, The Sopranos is the most talked about show on /tv/. It ended a decade ago and there's always at least one Sopranos thread getting bumped in the catalog at all times. Sure, you might see the occasional Mad Men, Wire, Breaking Bad thread here and there (Deadwood threads dive to the last page), but nothing like what you see with The Sopranos. A decade later and it still inspires new discussions and new memes around here. Perhaps one of the Star Treks comes close to that.

>making general statements about an entire continent

I don't think it has much to do with where you come from but just personally taste.

In The Wire you are basically watching events unfold as if you were looking down on a miniature model Baltimore. It's very expansive and informative but the realism also makes it dry.

The Sopranos have a clear main chararcter and take a more artistic approach to story telling (e.g.dream sequences). You still get an overall feel of the setting, New Jersey, but you see it subjectivly through Tony's or the mafia culture's lens.

I wish I was more well-read to compare both shows to works of literature to showcase the different ways both stoires that are being told.

Madame Bovary is the perfect example of a book that does both.

It's purposefully very realistic in its descriptions (so much famously so that it started its own genre) but then you get a bit from Emma bovary's POV or another characters and it's suddenly quite different, yet because it's one of the greatest novels ever written the transitioning is seemless.

There's also don quixote
