Only three other movies don't have monster brawls. Most importantly the original (which is a must anyway) and the 1984 one (not to be confused with its 1985 US edit which deliberately cranked up the cheese).

These aim for a more serious tone, and they are the most political entries on the franchise, aside from Shin. '84 does suffer from a mediocre human plot that doesn't come close to delivering the drama of the original, and instead of having another giant monster to fight, Godzilla briefly clashes with a flying tank thing.

The third is the '98 Murican one.

The followup to the '84 film, Godzilla vs Biollante does have monsters duking it out, but it also tries to keep a more serious feel, features the topic of bio engineering and eco terrorism, and it awkwardly tosses in some esoteric, psychic bullshit too which I personally never cared for. But a lot of fans praise it, and it was voted the best Godzilla film by a bunch of Nips some years ago.

After '84 and Biollante, the series went back to crowd-pleasing corniness, aping Western movies, and repeating itself over and over.

What if I really like shin and 2014 for different reasons?

Mere minutes of screen time form the entire basis of arguments against the early Godzilla films while all of the gaping flaws of the Heisei and Millennium Series often get as pass. You want your monsters treated with more seriousness than the lighter touches of the 60s. I understand that. But something not appealing to your preference doesn't make an entire film awful. As complete packages, Honda's early stuff is easily among the best Godzilla has to offer as cinema.

SHIN Godzilla legitimately had some of the most impressive CGI I've ever seen.

Shin has superior atomic breath by a massive degree, both in terms of range and destructive power, but in every other way it's weak. It's a lot slower than LegendaryGoji, and a hell of a lot less durable. ShinGoji got pretty severely injured by regular bombs, LegendaryGoji could tank nukes. What's more, after using radioactive breath, ShinGoji was comatose for several days.

All in all, it really comes down to how much damage ShinGoji's atomic breath can really do to Legendary Goji, if Legendary Goji can tank it, even for a few seconds, the fight is over. LegendaryGoji just has to get within arms reach of the essentially immobile ShinGoji and the fight is over.

I really hope they do more unconventional stuff with the license. Shin was similar to the original film, but was unique enough that it stands on its own as a good fucking movie. I appreciated that it wasn't about nukes anymore either, but about a different disaster analogue instead (the earthquake/tsunami that hit Japan).
Hopefully Monster Planet does well, and Toho will allow the series to have some wiggle room to do more interesting stuff like Shin.

I think the visuals on the damaged road and buildings were more in line with what happened after the 2010 tsunami and fukushima meltdown. The roads looked exactly like that. Bonus, the evacuation of tokyo was nearly called for in days immediately after it happened, just like in Shin Godzilla.

It must have caused a big rift with the rest of the effects, though. At some point they let their concepts get ahead of them. Animal tails are way too fluid for animatronics and that became an important foreshadow for the ending, there's also the opening mouth which would have been an entirely separate puppet, and the speed at which he shoots his beams around.

Anno is usually pretty averse to CGI when it comes to kaiju stuff. The first film he ever did was an Ultraman fan film in college. He also did this little short about the God Warriors from Nausicaa using zero CGI.
