THIS

Nobody in their right mind wants to live in NYC unless they're the 1%. It's great to work and enjoy the nightlife, but no way would I want to live there. It's overpriced as fuck.

I can't believe this film is almost 25 years old now.
>>
It's mostly set in North Jersey, but plenty of it takes place in Harlem and other parts of NYC.

Great portrayal of 70's urban decay. I love the scenes in the projects, absolute commie block kino.
>>
>>81656962
That's Philly. I even walked down the park where Eddie Murphy's character was picked up by the cops.

The only scene of New York was near the end at the Exchange and that hardly gas us a glimpse of what a shithole it was in the 80's.
>>
>>81654820
It really is. I grew up the 90s NYC and while I didn't grow in the rich parts of Manhatten, there was still a general optimistic feeling happening in the whole city. Crime was going down, the city was getting a bit cleaner and people seemed a bit happier. Then 9/11 happened and some people just went overboard with the whole terrorism fright.

I'm just glad I didn't grow up in the 70s and 80s NYC. That place looked like a shithole based on the movies and news reports I've seen.

up until the 90s (maybe mid 80s) you should shoot any movie you wanted in New York
this meant a lot of sleazy crime flicks where made there

then the State/city government refused to give filming licenses to people that wanted to make New York look bad
so now we get safe/clean new york in movies instead of crime riddled shithole

though to be fair...the crime rate has dropped off since the 70s. It just means the films are worse.

Being a black guy from Bed-Stuy I have to say that Everybody Hates Chris was pretty accurate, except Brooklyn in the early 2000's wasn't that dangerous anymore.
Brooklyn is almost completely gentrified now and people still have a bad perception of it because of Biggie's music and shit like Crooklyn, it's infuriating.

>Was the 90s the last time of unbridled and naive optimism
It sorta was.

Think about it. It was 1993, 2 years after the Soviet Union fell. The Cold War was over and the US was riding high on job growth and prosperity. We were unmatched in economic, cultural, and military power in that decade.

Now look at us today. It's fucking terrifying that college grads can't get long-term employment. People get divided into shouting matches between pretentious SJWs and asshole alt rightists. Race is becoming more and more of a powder keg issue than it's been in decades. Everyone is connected to the Internet and smartphones, thus isolating individuals more and more from real life while drawn in their virtual vindication.

Fuck, I'd give anything to go back 20 years ago. 1997 was one of the best years in my life. Mid-90's (1995) to August 2001 was comfy as fuck to live as a kid.

Don't get me wrong. I love high-speed, torrents, streaming, and the rest of modern convenience, but there really was a bit of innocence back then.

When you DL'd something on a 56k modem through Usenet or mIRC, you made damned well sure it was something you wanted and appreciated it.

This is hands-down the most inspirational speech ever. And it's absolutely right. We determine our future and we alone can make it happen.

Well, the difference is quality sci-fi flicks and historical epics build a believable scenario. You're clearly retarded and/or deluded if you think EWS was a meticulous adaptation of NYC.

That's a legitimately accurate east saint louis simulator. I highly recommend not going there.

Seriously anon, we're talking about art here... After seeing that movie, I couldn't have guessed it wasn't actually filmed in NYC. The setting of the story was in NYC, but I don't think it was aiming at a meticulous adaptation of it. I bet you think Once Upon a Time in America wasn't a "meticulous adaptation" of prohibition-era NYC

You're clearly not from NY so I suggest you stop typing. Remember the words of Honest Abe.

If you are from NY and couldn't tell, consider leaving your basement and exploring your environment. That, or you're from upstate, in which case the previous advice applies.

Upstate NY is amazingly beautiful, I was very surprised when I was there. Hudson area was a bit shit around Albany but whatever.

The Hot Rock was good too, and you got money shots of the WTC under construction.

Didn't get that far North sadly. Basically took this route over a few weeks.

>Woody Allen, especially in the comfy 80s like Hannah and Her Sisters and stuff
This. I hate Woody Allen as much as the next guy, but his earlier films have a quintessential New-yorker charm.

Nice, glad to hear you had fun. Upstate New York is indeed beautiful. It has a rustic charm to it that outsiders don't associate with the state since popular perception is tied to the metropolitan areas.

What was your favorite area?

You know that shits made up right? Yes no one jumped down to save her like a retarded super hero but people called the police and the articles over stated how many people saw the attack.

He's one of the greats and gets a fair amount of love from critics and fans in the know

The bit around Syracuse was my favorite, but the Catskills were nice as well. Rochester was also surprisingly nice. Basically anything near the water or hills was great. Except for Buffalo, which was shit. Albany was a bit shit as well.

Gotta say I was surprised when I left NYC to go north to the Catskills how abrupt the transition from built up to wilderness was. Where I'm from the suburbs go on for 30-40 miles before even rural starts but there it was like a magical forest or something.

You ever step back and think about how much your wasting your life being needlessly angry about literally everything?

If you need to be inspired by another, you were never going to do anything of substance to begin. Only the self-driven move mountains.

You will move shopping carts.

Sounds like an awesome trip. I'm not the biggest fan of Rochester, but Albany holds a special place in my heart even though it is a dump since I went to SUNY Albany for two years. Lots of fun times were had.

Thanks for visiting, anon. Next time you make it to NY, make sure to visit Pommes Frites if you're in the city and the Adirondacks if you're going up north. Cheers.

Unless you live in a part of the world where free speech is suppressed and the populace is subjugated by their own government so fear and survival are the only two thoughts you have from morning to night.
