It's why cinematic universe meme has never worked out for Sony, they keep trying to make cinematic universe with Spider-man, Venom, Ghostbusters, like there's going to be a big story, they force it upon the creators of upcoming movie that just want to do their own thing and the thing is that they in fact never fucking have the bigger story. It worked out for Marvel because they are flexible, when they were making Iron Man 1 they weren't thinking about how Iron Man 2 will be or Avengers will be, they were worrying if there will be things at all and movies clearly started suffering when it was confirmed that there will be things (see: Iron Man 2 was clearly made with Avengers in mind).

Force Awakens ultimately is just less of a movie, especially when the only thing it told us about this new Star Wars world in the future is that nothing has fucking changed. That's just plain stupid, it retroactively diminishes accomplishments of previous movies. J. J. Abrams is a mistake.

While I sort of understand the reasoning for this, it's shit because these characters are too big to be swept aside for the Rey, Finn, Kylo and all the other new characters.The gaping holes are incredibly distracting. The OT trilogy stood on its own and even the prequels mostly didn't need the EU to expand on them, though the Sifo Dyas shit and probably a couple of other things stuck out like a sore thumb.

They either need to keep the old characters prominent, or they should have just set it at a point in the future where everyone was dead. Luke Skywalker, in a Star Wars film, should never be a bit part.

i can understand that they wanted him and his rage to seem very in-character for a sith, but it doesn't come across as threatening, just embarrassing. if he had a single redemption or moment of true power, he would've gained some respect.

what did he do in the film? he ordered soldiers to kill villagers. he prayed to his mask. he got ordered around by his hologram. he ordered soldiers to destroy a spacebar. he caught the girl, but then failed his interrogation and had her escape, and then threw a temper tantrum that was PLAYEDF ORF UCKING JOKES in the moment where the audience should have been disturbed and worried for the girl. he fails to catch her again, and then draws her in a duel.

his moment of power was killing his unarmed father with a sucker-punch when he was opening up to him.

there are plenty of films with villains who aren't made to be given respect from the audience or other characters. they're usually psychotic or sociopathic with no respect for other living things to make your audience go 'wow, this guy's insane', but kylo doesn't go primal; he's just emotional, and kylo isn't a sociopath; he's just disturbed. he does NOTHING of note, not enough to make you respect or detest him. really a weak character, but the film's made of those strung together by action sequences lifted from better films.

Actually TFA wasn't a Star Wars remake so much as it was a pissy writer who helped Lucas write ESB and ROTJ retconning the fuck out of ROTJ because he was pissy that Lucas rejected all of his ideas for ROTJ, when Lucas decided to end the story with that film and not do Ep 7-9 in the 80s.

Ford hates Star Wars. He always preferred his non-genre work (like the Tom Clancy films he did) because unlike Fischer and Hamill, he actually went on to become a superstar actor who did other more prestigious acting work and didn't end up having to settle for work as a Hollywood script hack (Fisher) or voice over actor (Hamill).

TFA failed for me for two reasons:

1.) It is too blatantly a re-hash of A New Hope, but on steroids and without the same creativity

I'm gonna go against the grain here and say that ultimately I think Lucas made the right decisions with ROTJ. Ewoks are questionable, definitely, but all the rest was solid.

I never liked the 'dark' version where the film is only about Luke vs Palpatine and Han dies.

It was supposed to be the ending of the trilogy so ending on a positive note, and having a climax that gives all the central characters a chance to shine and take center stage, is a good idea. The film has flaws, but I think the emotion of the script outweighs them and leaves the audience with a very satisfying ending.


If they wanted to retcon ROTJ... then why not just do that? I don't understand the logic behind TFA's backstory.

If they just wanted to do films about the rebels vs Empire again... then do that. You could even write the backstory to be that despite the destruction of the second death star, the Emperor, and Vader, that the Empire held together and crushed the rebels anyway. After all, that massive fleet of star destroyers was never defeated in the film.

The rest of the Empire rallying and continuing to dominate the galaxy is depressing, but at least it makes sense.


Perhaps a better backstory would have been that after the Emperor's death the remnants of the Empire remained dominant... but fractured.

There is no galactic Empire and there is no Reublic; just isolated worlds and anarchy. A new dark age, within which evil is growing once again in the shadows, offering to bring order to chaos...

I can buy Rei being a good mechanic and skilled fighter since she scavenges crashed ships and lives in a dangerous environment, but we should get a sense that her life experiences are limited to her simple scavenger's life and she should probably, to her detriment, be mistrusting of everyone else since she is so used to being alone and having people try to rip her off.

Don't forget that they cut as much of Maz's shit as possible at the last minute because they werent happy with the effect and performance.
