If you'll notice, Jerry is wearing the same colors as Superman in the pilot.

Before the first real episode, a Jewish magician visited Jerry and trapped him in the vessel of a Superman action figure, which is seen in every episode, then assumed the form of Jerry to cause misfortune for others in the guise of a Regular Joe. He also transforms his apartment to look completely different for some reason.

After the last episode when they are all in prison, the magician reveals his true form and intention to the other three, having used them for years to spread misfortune and now they must suffer as well. He fades out of the cell and is never seen again.
