The first movie has the fun Battle choreography.
It's a more entertaining movie.
The sequel is too slow and serious for its own good and it doesn't really work.

upon first viewing, I preferred part 1. Then, after a couple more viewings, I liked Part 2 better.

But now, I re-watched them recently and... I like them both equally, for different reasons. Part 1 is more stylish, has more action etc. Part 2 has better writing/dialogue.

2 is more restrained and more mature in a way. 1 is just HELL YEAA JAPAN SWORDS!
