That's the expected reaction. You'd have to be a massive cuck to enjoying watching numales and niggers do MST3k.
>>
>>81610768
Is it really that bad?
>>
>>81610846
Nah it's pretty decent. Has some problems for sure though. Watch the first two episodes (or just episode 2) and decide for yourself.
>>
>>81610846
I mean, maybe I'm blinded by nostalgia. I've loved the original series for decades, and to me, this feels like it's been made by people who know that it's popular, but really just don't get what made it lovable.

I also don't appreciate that they offer no reason for the bots to be back on the SoL. I know that watching MST3k for the continuity is like eating soup for the spoon, but if you don't have the original actors doing the voices and don't even bother to explain why the bots are there, why not just make some new robots?
>>
>>81610979
Yeah I don't know why a throwaway line like "oh yeah I found some spare parts and got these guys up and running" would be so hard.
>>
>>81610846
it's never a stellar idea to bring shows like these back, that had a small but loyal following, because theyre going to be the only ones who care and they'll be super critical of any changes.

It's very much the same show, only eighteen years later with a new cast.

It feels like people expect the new episode to be immediately Final Sacrifice / Space Mutiny / Manos tier, when for most of the duration of the show the episodes were just okay and the pleasure came from watching shitty movies being riffed with varying degree of success.

It's so easy to spot the redditors.

Most of the sets from the trailer look green screened.
>>

CGI sets are cheaper and allow Joel to pocket more of the kickstarter money.
>>
The comedic timing in the first episode is a disaster. It's like they thought they had to have a riff after every single line. They belt out jokes and leave absolutely no time to let them land. They rarely ever just watch the movie and find a moment to make a joke.
>>
>>81611302

It's all a practical set, but the static way they filmed it really makes it look like a green screen.

Watched the first episode and enjoyed it enough. I went in knowing it wasn't going to be able to compete with a top-tier episode and they'd be finding their stride so I rolled along with it. It's kind of refreshing seeing an episode tailored to Joel's style of riffing after years of RiffTrax even if I enjoy Mike's style of riffing more.

My two main nitpicks are that Jonah's and Servo's voice often sound similar in the theater and that at times they do a riff that involves a bit too much in a small timeframe and they start talking really fast and it felt stilted and awkward.

I don't give a shit about the continuity of this show at all so I started with episode 12 since the movie seemed like it would have some funny stuff.

-NuTom is average, not bad but not good either
-They move around a lot for no reason
-Jonah is actually pretty good
-Day is OK
-Oswald is bad and unfunny
-Feels like they rapid fire jokes sometimes and then there's some dead air afterwards

Still got a good amount of legit laughs out of it and I'm only 30 minutes in.
>>
>>81613434
That's an dumb comparison. Fallout is an expansive scifi world that contains coherent stories. MST3K is a comedy skit show that has consistently ignored logic and coherence for its entire existence and specifically tells you to chill out in its opening theme song.
>>
Mike > Joel > Jonah
>>
>>81613813
Well, duh
>>
How's the riff content? Is it more "dude obscure references lmao" a la Joel, or more "dude I'm a wiseass douchebag lmao" a la Mike?
>>
>>81613925
It's non-obscure modern pop culture references written for redditors.
>>
>>81613925
I would say it skews towards Joel, which isn't surprising since Joel spearheaded the reboot and Mike wasn't involved.
>>
>>81610846
It's fine. I watched the first half hour and laughed four or five times. Jonah Ray seems pretty likeable.
>>
>>81613925

Does Paul Chaplin write for either the new season or RiffTrax? He was the king of the eclectic references.
>>
I wonder, even if they got the entire original crew back together, would it actually be good? Or would it be one of those deals where they can't really recapture the magic of 20+ years ago anyway? I feel like it'd probably be the latter.
>>
>>81610814
Yes, I too am outraged that this dorky puppet show about bad movies has abandoned the alt-right, white nationalist values that we all remember it upholding so strongly.
>>
>>81613747
It's really not.

The original series maintained plotpoints throughout its run. Mike accidentally blew up earth, and then in subsequent episodes, they weren't orbiting earth anymore and were floating through space.

Imagine if they blew up earth, and then in the next episode, earth was just back and they never talked about why or how.

The "just relax" line is about absurdist stuff like making a bomb that could blow up a planet using just baking soda and vinegar, or climbing a ladder from a satellite to earth, not about paying attention to the story they wrote.
>>
>>81614274
I think what he means is that things were more open in the 90s.

"Take Track of the Moon beast"

There are a good amount of jokes that would be considered racist towards native Americans.

You just don't see that stuff anymore.

>The original series maintained plotpoints throughout its run
no just in the shit years
>>
>>81614540

Not really. Only during the SciFi channel years, and those were the worst skits in the series.

>The "just relax" line is about absurdist stuff like...

>>
>>81614382
>>81614274

Part of what made MST3K so great to watch was that they would do jokes and references across the entire spectrum. During Horrors of Spider Island they made several jokes about how sexist that movie was while at the same time making their own jokes that some might deem sexist.

Or like in Mitchell where in less than a span of a minute the riffs range from Joel just making a sound to accompany Mitchell jumping in surprise, riffing that Mitchell and his captain had an affair, riffing on how dumb Mitchell sounds and then pointing out an extra looks a lot like Harlan Ellison.

Really surprised about how similar it feels to the original series. But then the different things stick out like a sore thumb (Gypsy's voice, the intro, the credits that last an ice age).

Also, Jonah's pretty good but he sounds more like Tom Servo then the guy they got for Tom Servo.
>>
>>81615006
The new episodes are still just like that though.

>>81613959
You clearly haven't watched them. I'm watching episode 11 and they just referenced "Maynard G. Krebs." Do you know who the fuck that is? Nobody does.
>>
>the segments give me le cringe!

the sensation of "cringe" is for dull normies capable of feeling uncomfortable when confronted with weird shit. the original shows routinely had segments focused around sub-Carrot Top prop comedy. but that shit was adorable and earnest. the new segments are largely in the same vein. they're hit-or-miss and all dive headlong into some dumb premise. as close to the original series as anyone is capable of.

>Patton and Felicia aren't funny.

wew. i like Patton's stand up a lot, but yeah. he doesn't really have shit to do here and is plainly just along for the ride and the attention his name brings. i don't really know shit about Felicia, but same.

>new Tom Servo voice.

yeah. it's pretty far off base from the earlier Servos. apparently Joel told Baron to not stress getting too deep into a Servo impression because then you have to add on another layer of voices when doing impressions in riffs.

>the show is different in X way!

yeah. it is. and it's still pretty good.

Jonah is so fucking boring I can't stand him. Not as chill and natural as Joel or as talented and funny as Mike. He's really stiff and it doesn't help that he has all the bots crowded around him. Like he's trying not to accidentally hit them and fuck up the take

>Hodgson said a lot of the new writers grew up as fans of the original series. That includes Ray, who is also a writer, and Day, who wrote on four episodes.

Servo especially. At times it feels like he's reading someone else's jokes without any understanding of the context. Which may be the case.

It's not terribly bad, just a little distracting at times.

I don't know shit about this. But why didn't they just bring back the old crew? Is it because they're busy doing Rifftrax?

Because they all moved on with their lives and careers to new ventures and what's left is the bottom sucking scum that can't hack it anywhere else so they wish to revive an IP that was put to rest to shake some more coins out of its corpse.

>>
>>81611351
This. Fucking this. I know the original series did some quick one liners, but god damn, they usually worked off of one another. This one is like "YOUR JOKE, GO!" "OK, YOUR JOKE NOW, GO!" "QUICK FIT YOUR JOKE IN BEFORE THE NEXT LINE OF DIALOG!"

It was way, WAY too rapid for my taste, and didn't have nice timing. Also, I noticed most of the jokes were timed PERFECTLY with a cut, which I know they used on the classic series, but sparingly. This time, it just seems like they had to fill a quota.

I stopped half way through. I can honestly say I am not at all impressed.

Also, what the fuck is with Gypsy and Tom floating all over the place? That shit was annoying as fuck.

Props to keeping the low-budget stuff though.

Favorite moment: the Bubble Fan
>>
So none of the original voice actors for the bots are back? No Mike? Patton Oswalt is involved?

No thanks.

I wish we had more MST3K produced back when it was originally on, of course, but it at least had a nice ending. They should have just made new characters/setting for this and presented it as something that was in spirit of the show.

Hell, it's not hard to write up a concept for a show like that. Dude gets lost in the woods and finds cabin/abandoned drive-in with bunch of shitty movies and watches them with a fucking bigfoot/mothman/cryptid thing. Something stupid like that.

Mike and Joel were both awesome.

The Patton involvement kind of ruins this for me, personally. I still LOVE MST3K. Love. And I always will. Nothing can change that. All of the original creators could come out as full blown feminazi SJW trash and say Trump voters deserve death, and I would still love it.

That said I don't think I really need to watch this.

>>81614274
let me just say this... first off, times were different back then. it wasn't full blown degeneracy yet.

second off, the show was always kid friendly. it wasn't political at all. zero percent. it was just funny. it made you laugh. it was light hearted.

it was art.

that social justice stuff is the death of art and creativity, and humor. it just destroys and ruins everything it touches. you can believe what you want, just leave it out of the comedy and art, which is supposed to bring people together who wouldn't otherwise.
>>
>>81622871
I would watch that cryptid thing, that's a great idea

First episode was mediocre, some good jokes here and there but for the most part the film was pretty dull and there wasn't much to work with. Second episode got a lot of laughs from me except for the cringey segment where Pearl showed up again.

Everything you've said there is true.

BUT this show is not guilty of bringing in the politics. These new episodes do not have any political humor in them, and are still kid-friendly. I think it would work because it taps into the essence of the original show, but doesn't dig up what I would consider a resolved plot.

I think this series is just.. ten years too late. If it had happened back then maybe we could have had the whole cast back and it could be something more than whatever this is.

It just proves that Joel is the worst host and Joelfags worship him simply for the fact that he was the original host.

>Yeah guys that movie was really bad eh... hey Dr. Forester let's do a silly invention exchange LA EM AY OH

Joel sucks but luckily had Trace's Crow and Kevin's Servo to back him up.
>>
>>81610768
Just started watching it. They seem like they're trying too hard to be the old characters, and all it makes you do is draw unfavorable comparisons. They should have had the guts to completely cast new robots with new personalities, these guys trying to imitate Tom and Crow are cringe-inducing. 70% of the humor of the old show came from the way the lines were delivered, and these guys are not up to it. You can make the argument that the old show didn't start nearly as good, and it didn't, but these guys are standing on the shoulders of greatness and still failing pretty hard. Felicia Day is particularly unfunny. Patton Oswalt is okay, but I can't laugh at him after all of his embarrassing Twitter crusading.

The sad fact is that there are 18 episodes of the original series on Netflix, with more to come, hopefully. Unless you've seen them all within the past 5 years, you can watch them again and they're like new. There are always jokes and shit that you never noticed. May as well just watch those.

It seems unnatural. It seems HYPER scripted. (Yes, I know it was scripted before), like they're just trying to jam in every fucking joke they can think of. I really want them to just shut up for 30 seconds.

Fucking this. But people would have been pissed. They hate new takes on things. They'd rather have a pale imitation than a clever reinvention.
>>
>>81627894
Agreed. They could probably have stood to cut like 25% of the jokes and just take their time with the pacing to make it sound more natural. The way they did it makes it sound like they were being recorded at gun point.

Even with the less than stellar old eps I could always skip right to the movie part and it would be funny. I mean I'm going to try and give it a fair shot because I loved the original so much, but based on the first one they're really not off to a great start.
