Currently reading it and taking my time. Its pretty enjoyable. Haven't gotten to the part where Paul Owen (not Allen apparently) gets murdered, but so far it seems like you can just read any chapter and know whats going on.

Do you like End of Evangelion? The early part is too new wave for my tastes, but when it hits the second half, I think it really comes into it's own. Both commercially and artistically.

ive listened to the audiobook of american psycho. its very linear and easy to follow but interesting enough to keep your attention. its basically just a longer and more fleshed out version of the movie. half of it is basically demonstrating the shallowness of these wall street people and the other half is bateman mental issues, but even knowing that the book is suprisingly creative and convincing. depending on who you are you will propably sympathize with bateman and want to be him at times but when he goes full psycho the books becomes fairly disturbing and goes into a lot of detail. its actually very effective at making people rethink their concept of being edgy because bateman is so over the top but still believable.

Not sure if you actually wanted a real answer or not but excluding all the dubs in this fucking thread, it makes a cretin amount of sense you would feel this way.
Whether the murders were real or not in the movie wasn't really important: what was important was that he became a psycho because of his self made purgatory created from forcing himself into being an empty, egotistical, yuppie that can be interchangeable with every other empty, egotistical, yuppie.
Shit, the guy can't even get the gratification he wants for being a murder because everyone else is too caught up and self absorbed in their own bullshit to care about his confesses - and on three different occasions at that.
Anyway, that culture, for the most part, doesn't exist anymore but self made purgatories are a mechanism to cope with physiologically shitty society's created by institutionalized and diluted adults who just happened to be born before us.

will this be the thread we'll finally discuss the movie, kek will show.
>>81615085
in my experience the lower you are on the social ladder the more there is a certain need to conform.
it's not about getting ahead, it's about surviving the day, work in unity, also there's a lot of jealousy, pressure from above because everyone all the way to the top delegates their shit to whoever is beneath them and you're left to deal with the most soul crushing menial shit
>>81615085
No, it's a lifestyle of that particular job/class. In high society, you are expected to act a cretin way and obtain a cretin kind of job. Eventually there becomes no distinction between you, the class, and the job you have. And the constant bombardment and perceptions of others around you keep you in that loop.
This is one of the many reasons why Japan's birth rate is in decline, along with anime wifus, old people not dying fast enough, and our Japanese generational counterparts watching how fucking miserable their parents were living in their "you need to have a family and be a salary man" societal conformity.
>>81604822
Bateman was only supposed to be 26 in the book and movie right?
>tfw 27
>>81615193
I've been around long enough to have been in threads where they talk about the movie, it really does happen.
>>81615330
>in my experience the lower you are on the social ladder the more there is a certain need to conform.
It's been the opposite in my experience. The higher up the latter I got, the more I had to put on a face to prove I was worth the money they were giving me.
Unless we're talking about tech companies here, and even then it depends on which one. Some still have underline symptoms of shallow 80's yuppie culture.
>>81604822
It's kind of weird to think of this movie as being newer than Fight Club, but it's true.

Was like that when I was 25. Now I'm approaching 30 and feel... this might sound awkward, but the most precise I can manage to describe it is that I'm rediscovering my teenage self and making peace with it, while not reverting to it entirely, but looking at it from the perspective of my accumulated experience, my freshly found Zen. It doesn't actually feel as cheesy as it sounds. Often it feels depressing: I feel a lot of regrets about not being bolder before, not being true to myself sooner. Sometimes I feel like I'm going crazy. But the only thing I am sure of is that I'm not going back to merely existing. Perhaps it's midlife crisis coming early, I don't know. But I feel like I finally found what I want to be and what I want to do, and even when the devil(i.e. my weaker, lazier and more cowardly part)is whispering into my ear that it's too late or it's too ridiculous to be true, I keep going.
>>81604822
The older I get the more I start getting dubs.
>>81615085
It's all about perception.
You know, Goldman doesn't get the big M&A deals because they're more competent than your average local corporate finance boutique full of frighteningly smart state uni grads. Most large companies have had decade long relationships with other consulting/M&A firms, that have handled all their small acquisitions and so on, who know the firm inside out. Yet when it comes time for the big show, they get frozen out. And the Goldmans, Rothschilds and JPmorgans get it.
They get it because it's expected that their name is attached to the M&A deal. If the name isn't there, buyers and financiers of the buyers will assume something is wrong, and they won't be interested.
So if the big picture is that competence isn't key, appearance is, you can understand that this translates inside the organisation as well. It's similar on the legal side.

thats because i only know how to get dubs
