What did this scene mean, /tv/?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t7FZJ_jrP9I&t
>>
>>81601366
He was trying to tell Peter Boyle that he's losing his shit, but the guy doesn't really get it. He basically just projects his own shit onto Travis
>>
>>81601366
It shows the unsatisfactory and disappointing nature of normie """advice"""
>>
I thought it was a "You are who you choose to be" Iron Giant moment.
>>
He's just telling Travis to chill the fuck out, drive his cab, and don't shoot a Senator. Just because you feel like something is wrong with society doesn't mean you should or can change anything.

Also anybody that thinks Travis was right should be put on a watch list.
>>
>>81601683
I thought Travis was attractive and goofy but clearly misguided if that counts, this movie has a great aesthetic.

Phenomenal opening track in this film.

But yeah op, he's just a cab driver so it doesn't matter how shit his advice is.
>>
>>81601366
Why did he order his food and then leave it there?
>>
So, was Travis lying about being a vet or not?
>>
>>81602037
According to the screenplay he was a real Vet. Nothing in the movie says it for sure though so it's up to you.
>>
>>81601968
It's one of the best movies ever made but a troubling number of people think that Travis is a role model. Also yes the whole opening is hypnotic.
>>
>>81601428
>>81601529
these
>>
>>81601968
I thought his advice was poorly articulating a profound idea. Travis is suffering from some kind of psychosis and feels like he's losing control. The old guy basically tells him that the role you choose in the world defines who you are. Why don't I own my own cab? It must be because that's who I am. I choose to be a night shift taxi driver.

Travis fancies himself a political assassin. He shaves his head and basically grooms himself for the role of villain, but when he finally gets his chance to assassinate the Senator, he chickens out. Instead he ends up saving the girl, and becomes a hero. So that must be who Travis is because that's what he chose.
>>
>>81602360
Interesting viewpoint.
>>
>>81602360
>Travis fancies himself a political assassin.
I don't think Travis knows what to do with himself, that's the problem. He just feels that something is wrong and wants to lash out at the people he sees as responsible. That's why when his assassination plot falls apart he kills the pimp. To him it's the same thing and it's not about doing right in the world so much as him feeling like he's done something.
>>
>>81601366
A REAL BEAN
>>
>>81602567
True. I agree that Travis is not consciously choosing his destiny. I just think it's interesting that he was inches from killing the Senator. He would have ended the movie in jail as a villain. But instead he fails, and he ends up killing the pimps, and the newspapers publish articles about what a hero he is. I just think there's some parallel between the "Your job becomes who you are" speech and how Travis lashes out in the end defines how the world perceives him. But then again, I don't know. The scene has always stuck out to me.
>>
>>81602695
I always just saw the ending as an ironic commentary on how society views violence. Do what you think is right against the wrong person (according to society) and you're a villain, do what you think is right against the right person for the same reason and you're a hero. Travis is a psychopath either way but since he took out his rage on a pimp he's hailed. This thread makes me want to rewatch it, it's been a while. Also the "some scenes are Travis's fantasies" theory is actually pretty compelling and I want to see if it holds up after a complete viewing.
>>
>>81601428
It's basically this, although I wouldn't necessarily say Peter Boyle is projecting. He's trying to give Travis some common sense advice mixed in with some homespun existential philosophy. He seems to interpret his problem as a sort of generalized malaise and dissatisfaction with the stresses of work and life. He doesn't realize how deeply troubled Travis actually is.

>>81601366
What did Travis see in the glass of water?
>>
>>81602037
he was a vet, when he's doing push ups you can see a big scar on his back, probably a a war wound which is why he was discharged
>>
>>81602037

He sure was, and Vietnam was probably the reason why he suffers so much from anxiety and isolation. You can tell he's not right just in the beginning of the film..
>>
>>81601366
Men have trouble talking to each other about their feelings in general and at the time PTSD (which he was suffering from) was not a widely understood disorder.
>>
>>81602037
Why the hell would he be lying?
>>
>>81602956
himself
>>
>>81604828
He lied to everyone else in the movie

> my top secret work with the government
>>
>>81602956
I love this little moment. So happy that someone bother to make a webm out of it.

And to answer your question, he probably saw GOD.
>>
>>81601683
he was right though

His own rage bubbling to the surface at a corrupt and unjust human society?

idk how about go fuck yourself?
>>
>>81602695

Yeah, the thing is Travis is still derailed by the end of the movie but just because he took out some hoodlums instead of a senator he looks like a straight edge hero.
>>
>>81602037

A lower class guy in his mid/late 20s at that time most likely would have been drafted and not been able to dodge it
>>
Where is this generation's movie about young white male loneliness and social isolation now that it's more prevalent than ever?

Why would anyone draw inspiration from such a ridiculous scene?
>>
>>81610461
what so ridiculous about it?
>>
>>81610554
First of all, it is impossible to have vivid hallucinations from alcohol consumption. Secondly, his reaction was vastly exaggerated and even comical in retrospect.
>>
>>81609548

Weight lifting wasn't as common back then, so high rep calisthenics was really the bulk of most workout regimens.
>>
>>81610608
well thats youre opinion
>>
>>81609583

This is too focused around a very specific kind of mentality. One that's substantial in size, but it doesn't have the universality of Taxi Driver.
>>
>>81610711
Say that to my face and see what happens, punk.
>>
>>81602923
Good point
>>
>>81602956
Some good interpretations so far. Here's mine.

The water is completely inert at first, but it starts bubbling with life after adding a single thing to it. In Travis' mind his life is inert, he has no higher purpose, he drives aimlessly. He's looking for that one thing, the one concept he could bring into his life to gain action and direction. This ends up being a dedication to ridding the city of its degenerates, a single idea to which he devotes himself fully. It ends up working too.

why do you think he has PTSD?
>>
>>81601366
I've seen this film about four times but I still can't make sense of why he took his date to a porno

shit was going well with his dating, why on earth did he think it was a good idea? how did he imagine it would go down if he took her to a fucking porn cinema
>>
>>81612352

People have been saying he has PTSD because of his chronic insomnia and isolation.
>>
>>81612631
oh ok. i'm not too read up on ptsd but I thought it had to do with getting flashback from combat situations and being on edge all the time. learn something every day innit

Because Travis hangs around low class people all the time and has this social awkwardness so he thinks this is what a date is.

He says that people take their dates to these kind of movies all the time but that's only a certain type of people. Because Travis always hangs around with "filfth" he kind of thinks all people are like that.

On one hand he despises these people, on the other hand he feels comfortable around these kinds of people and hangs around with them all the time. Like Betsy said in the restaurant, a walking contradiction.

nah. r9k posters are whiny virgin manchildren who've never experienced any hardship

Travis has been to a horrific war and most definetly has some severe psychiatric diagnose (schizotypal, PTSD, ASPD or something like that)
r9k are just ugly kids with self diagnosed depression who haven't gotten laid
