Sobel did nothing wrong.
No, he didn't. It's too bad what happened to him.

He did nothing wrong but also nothing right.
He should never have been a leader, his insecurities and short comings reveal a severe lack of character.
Another example of following the law but not understanding judgement.
What a cunt.

Actually he did plenty wrong, but that ending up being advantageous in building up unshakable esprit de corps.

Indeed. They were on a break.
In 1970, Sobel shot himself in the head with a small-caliber pistol. The bullet entered his left temple, passed behind his eyes, and exited out the other side of his head. This severed his optic nerves and left him blind. He was later moved to a VA assisted living facility in Waukegan, Illinois. He resided there for his last seventeen years until his death due to malnutrition on 30 September 1987. No services were held for him after his death.

His one fault was that he forget that you salute the rank - not the man.

He forgot the number one rule of leadership: to always be to keep up with your men and be able to do what they do. He trained Easy company to a very high standard but showed himself to be unable to fulfill his own duty of actually leading them effectively in combat. He was a terrible navigator, impatient, took credit from his subordinates and blamed his mistakes on them and completely lacked good tactical sense. A good leader doesn't necessarily have to be liked but they must be respected. His training may have made his men hate him, but his objective lack of ability meant they could never respect him. The top brass saw this, especially after his senior NCO's refused to fight under him and decided he'd make a better trainer than a leader. What Sobel did wrong was that he was more of a manager than a leader.
