Is the parody genre dead?
>>
>>81596572
Hollywood is already a joke, what's the need for parody?
>>
>>81596572
Scary Movie 5 is proof of the decline.
>>
>>81596602
it used to be good in the late 90s/ early 2000s

their must be a load of fresh stuff to make fun of by this point
>>
>>81596572

blame those jews who made meet the spartans and vampires suck and all those god awful "parody" movies

they literally killed a genre, and mel brooks is too old to bring it back
>>
>>81596572
Is this /spoofkino/?
I unironically give it a 7/10.
>>
>>81596742
it absolutely is, and it deserves more than a 7/10

the best in this genre this century
>>
>>81596572
Try out Angie Tribeca anon. It's a parody show along the lines of police squad and the naked gun.
>>
>>81596572
The most recent one was Fifty Shades of Black, which was obviously a parody of Fifty Shades of Grey, but with black people, and it was pretty shit.
>>
OH I'LL BE ABLE TO TAKE YOU TO SCHOOL I'LL JUST BE TOO DRUNK TO REMEMBER

I can't think of a good one after that.

Yes.

This movie and the first 3 Scary Movies can never be made today. Not even Airplane. Don't even get me started on Ace Ventura. We're lucky we got to see and enjoyed them with out any backlash.

This, pretty much

I've been slowly rediscovering a lot of forgotten parody flicks from the '70s through the '90s. It used to be a huge genre.

By no means are these quality films, but for interested anons check out the last 3 I watched:

>Mike's Mondo Video
late '70s SNL cast making a stupid as fuck experimental comedy film with film-school tier editing and writing, all parodying Italian mondos

>Kentucky Fried Movie
one of the OG parody flicks from the '70s, has a good gag or two, but also an uncomfortably long Bruce Lee parody that's about 1/3 of the movie -- worth it to see a couple racey jokes, though

>Silence of the Hams
early '90s thriller movie parody starring Dom Deluise and Billy Zane, with some good Clinton jokes thrown in that make you feel all warm and fuzzy nostalgic for the '90s
>>
>Tfw you realize that the glut of superhero flicks and movies based on young adult novels could be two comedy kinos for our age
>>
Yep, You cant make fun of anything these days without people screaming "Just let people like things!" or "stop being a hater".

Fandoms and cinematic universes wield too much power in the industry.

You know, I didn't realize how right you were until I sat back and gave it a moment.

Obviously everything in this movie is ALL played for laughs with tongue firmly planted in cheek, but people wouldn't stand for this shit today. No fucking way.

"Not Another Teen Movie" has:
>Teenage girl using a vibrator
>Vietnam vet being portrayed as a nutjob
>Racist caricature of an Asian
>Teenage tits
>Gay jokes
>A very minor black character who is the butt of the joke
>A song about teenage suicide
>A man getting beat and torn apart several times
>Teenage boys talking nonstop about sex
>Entire plot is about the weird geeky girl being "ugly" because she isn't fitting the female ideals
>Smoking
>Teen drinking
>Movie follows a main cast made up of entirely American and white actors

The only thing that would still "fly" is probably the incest subplot in today's movie landscape. Seriously.
>>
>>81596572
Superhero Movie and the Comebacks got me to laugh a handful of times. They were mediocre spoof movies.
>>
>>81596572
Someone should make a remake of a parody. The parody would be in the remake genre, while remaking a parody.
>>
The real world is too stupid to parody. People in the future will laugh at us. We're living breathing parody now.
>>
>>81597393
Except, make it darker. And grittier. Modernize the parody genre for the edgy new generation, make it violent and badass.

>>
>>81597356
I was watching Beverly Hills Ninja today and realized that the movie could never be made today either. It would blow a modern audience's mind the way they "callously portray" the Japanese ninja clan, never mind the pace of the movie or its focus on straight up slapstick.
>>
>>81597401
This, which is why I suggested >>81597393

Parodying modern film is pointless, because it is already a parody. So the parody has to be about the industry in general. You can guess why a movie like that won't be made though.
>>
>>81597487
Movie 48 sort of did that? Sort of?

God, that movie was awful. I actually paid money for it...
>>
>>81596602
Fate of the Furious is unironically the greatest parody film ever made. It's like everything big Hollywood movies are known for cranked up to 500% but played absolutely straight. It's a masterpiece.
>>
>>81597520
why?
>>
>>81597520
>search Movie 48

>movie 43
>some movie about interconnect stories or some bs

>48 HRS
>action movie with Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte

Which one is the right one? Those both sound like comedy/parody.
>>
>>81597478
Honestly, though, eventually someone is going to make it, and if it's good and funny it'll be successful anyway. Progressive protesting has never actually hurt any piece of media.
>>
Nah all these people talking about how it couldn't be made today are missing the big picture
Fun comedy movies can't exist anymore
Action, thriller, horror, are the only genres left for adults because everything has too be dark and gritty. It sucks that slapstick fun is really present only in kids movies now
>>
>>81597746
Is this an issue with millenials or gen x? I honestly don't know.

tbf, all the movies this thread has claimed as good fun comedy of the past, I watched as a kid.

>>
>>81597127
First 2 Scary Movies are top tier though, you must admit.

Angie Tribeca is pretty good. It reminds me of 30 Rock in terms of jokes put into one show. They get celebrities to just come in say a line and then disappear forever. Last episode had Chris Pine playing a Hannibal Lecter character which was pretty fucking funny.
>>

They made a lazy parody of the superhero genre awhile ago. I think we're due for an awesome parody now.
>>
>>81597245
This.

It used to be an era where people can have fun and all these spoof movies were coming out

Yeah, seriously, just grading it against normal movies I still give it high marks. Who wrote it? It makes more sense to lump those all together in one school than whatever the "Movie Movie" guys were doing.

same way the terrible comedies with no actual jokes call themselves "black comedies " then proceed to bomb at the box office

hot fuz wasn't even better than the other movie that guy did, the zombie one was more funny and relevant considering how many shitty zombie movies were coming out
fucking hot fuzz was like a script written 10 years before it came out, i'd say The Guard is way better and way more funny

>>
>>81599463
They don't feel comparable because they're actually good movies on top of being parodies. The writers actually constructed good movies out of parody material, instead of thinking up all of the individual parody scenes and then stitching them together. It's why the Scary Movies got progressively worse as they started parodying more movies, because what they were actually doing was stitching together more and more disjointed parody scenes that clashed and made the final picture a mess. It's also where all the shitty parody movies got it wrong, as they tried to ape that way of doing parody movies but without any writing skill. So they were completely unable to take all of those parody ideas they had and bring them together.

Isn't Police Academy just a straight comedy and not a parody, though? If it's a parody I've been missing out on it for ages.

Story-wise you might have a point, but that depends on whether you connect with the characters and so it's entirely subjective.

But there's no way in hell Hot Fuzz isn't the strongest of them when it comes to the comedy aspect. I kind of get your thinking. When I'd only seen the movies once I thought Shaun was WAY better than Hot Fuzz. But then I rewatched them and it became clear just how much smoother and tighter the comedic script and delivery is in Hot Fuzz.

Parody has died because parody doesn't bring $$$. Shit like 21 Jump Street brings $$$. Comedy today is basically 80's parodies/comedies without the slapstick and trope jokes. Plus all the 'racism' is removed. It's a shame but that's the way it goes.

You'd never get another Naked Gun type film. Or even Beverly Hills Cops type films. Hell, even Rush Hour is too 'racist' to do, despite being diverse as fuck (protags are a British Hong-Konger and a black guy). They attempted to do a Rush Hour type film with Jackie Chan and Johnny Knoxville, it was OK but it got poor reviews so no $$$.

I've watched Hot Fuzz on several occasions. I remember seeing the screener when it leaked then seeing it in the theater. It didn't really do anything for me. I saw Shaun and liked it when it came out. The Worlds End sort of spoke to me and the part of life I was in. The whole peak in high school and basically have nothing to show for it inlife. Plus I am a world class alcoholic who would love to stop but can't. Also I terms of jokes I related to a lot of them. However my friend stood me up and I watched the movie all by myself. So I could really be attached to the way I felt the night I had saw it.

I think the problem is not that there's not enough movies to parody today, but that writers have grown mean and cynical. It's hard to parody something you hate. The parodies of old were great because the people who made them had a genuine love for the source material.

The problem with comedy is that an All or Nothing type of genre, a comedy is either 10/10 or absolutely cringeworthy.

Latest great entries in the comedy/spoof I can remember as great are the Crank films, the Cornetto Trilogy and Cabin in the Woods, and they only work because they had fresh content and ideas instead of simply taking a parody a character and changing their name around a bit.

Parody won't come back until the age of irony ends. Movies are always making fun of themselves as a defense mechanism. Actors don't give it their all, they quip about their circumstances rather than living in them. Self-awareness is an excuse for plot holes and poor acting.

I want movies to start giving it their all again, putting themselves on the line and taking themselves incredibly seriously. Only then will parody come back.

The real reason comedy films are disappearing or going straight to Netflix is that they don't play well to the foreign market. Guardians of the Galaxy was a hit domestically but none of the humor translated to Chinese (because of all of the references: Pollock, Footloose, etc) and they hated it. Comedy is really culturally subjective outside of slapstick.
>>
>>81597149
You're underestimating by a ton. Nowadays Twitter seems to be the only thing marketers care about, to them it's a miracle, instant reciprocation of media by the "fans." That platform has a huge influence, which sucks because it's full of morons and assholes.
>>
Literally almost every genre of movies got destroyed in some way either through laziness or generation of offended millennials.

- Comedies became divided between extremely low brow slapstick humour made by washed up actors in their 20s and pseudo intellectual PC crap that forgets to be funny, Days of Shrek and early Sandler movies are long gone. Last time I laughed thorough movie was in 2014 when watching what we do in the shadows.

- Horror is just dead, bad actors, tons of cliches and scare jumps with no payoff or tension. Too many people confuse gore with fear.

- action movies plagued with shitty CGI shaky cam and lack of practical effects which made em look real.

- Thrillers pretty much don't exist or they revolve around a strong SJW woman that fights against evil white male oppression.

- Sci-Fi and adventure movies replaced with "deep" psychological rethinks about human nature.

yeah this is probably one reason tucker and dale felt more like an actual movie on top of a parody.

they didn't stitch scenes togethers with le wacky pop culture references in certain scenes from some other scary movie. it did its job well and felt like a movie of its own.
tucker and dale still makes me laugh.

Hot Fuzz is one of those movies that's absolutely incomprehensible to me.

I just don't get it, at all. It's not funny to me. Every gag falls flat, it doesn't even work that well as a parody, and the story is utterly uninteresting.

Tucker and Dale is hilarious, Shaun of the Dead is solid, I can even mildly enjoy The World's End. But Hot Fuzz is just utter trash.
>>
>>81605924
The ongoing joke with the token black just being there to say stereotypical catchphrases was hilarious and unoffensive, but that kind of thing would never be in a movie nowadays.
>>
>>81599746
I agree wholeheartedly with this, the movies stopped ''flowing'' well...

It takes talent and time to parody something whilst retaining some enjoyable continuity, but they just started shitting them out and haphazardly stitched incongruous scenes together like you said
>>
goofy ridiculous comedies in general died out around the late 2000s

there used to be several a year. austin powers, dumb and dumber, ace ventura, zoolander, dodgeball, old school, anchorman, talladega knights, hot rod, tropic thunder, step brothers. that sort of style of humor has just died off lately. maybe it's that society has gotten more cynical or more ironic or whatever, or maybe it's just that all the actors who used to star in those movies were all around the same age and now they're all old now. either way, i miss those movies.

I wouldn't blame millennials. I think the cause is naked capitalism. Look at vidya games for the same problem. Bigger budgets (both production and marketing) increase risk, nobody wants to lose money, so everything permutates around the same tried and true formulas.

Thrillers and Horror excludes kids, women
"True" sci-fi or fantasy is too nerdy for the general public
Anything too mature/serious like a good drama excludes kids and thick people.

What you're left with is kids movies with a few adult jokes, capeshit, and rom-coms. Until this ends you're going to see fast and the furious, marvelshit and mama-mia until the end of time.

we don't need parody because nothing is genuine anymore

every piece of art made in the 21st century has an ironic subtext

there's no such thing as a genuine horror film, or action flick, or western movie. there's always a voice behind it saying "hehe how lame, aren't the tropes of this genre so lame?"

imagine how we would react if someone said "that movie really scared me!" or "i was on the edge of my seat during that car chase!" the immediate response would be "what a faggot, doesn't he realize movies are FAKE!?" we can only enjoy things with detachment

consider reality TV, arguably the most popular genre. an inherent part of watching those shows is understanding both the behind the scenes aspects of casting, filming, editing, etc. and an understanding the 'meta-strategy' of whatever the show is about. nobody has ever watched 'the bachelor' without considering what 'role' an individual was cast for, how the editors manipulated a scene, and what the individuals on the show plan to do with their lives outside of the show, post-production. almost nothing about enjoying the bachelor actually involves wondering who the main dude is going to fall in love with!

imagine what kind of 'fool' would genuinely think about who would be the best fit in marriage?

This movie is excellent, though you won't enjoy it nearly as much if you haven't seen the teenager brat pack movies it parodies.

re-watched that a couple times a few months ago when it was coming on one of the premium movie channels a lot, it held up better than I ever woulda thought it would. first time i ever saw that cunt evans in anything. still remember renting it from blockbuster when it first came out, was one of the first cast commentary track dvd extras I ever heard, along with fight club and donnie darko

the pretty/ugly girl is way prettier to me now that i'm a lot older and fatter too, though she's not hitting on much playing supergirl's dyke sis these days. i always used to like the girl that played his incest lusting sister too but she got old and fat too, was on defiance a couple years back, no bueno

haunted house series is good because when the Wayan's actually sit down and write a parody thats complete it turns out great. 50 shades of black was shit because they wrote it coming off haunted house and thought they could phone it in and still earn big bucks on it
