The axe wasn't on the spaceship though... it was specifically stowed away in the mini life support ship. Having an axe in a life support ship makes sense, since the survivors may have to chop down trees or do some other survival shit. You could ask, why not use a robot or something to chop down trees... but the whole point is to conserve power in order to live longer. A wooden axe is the most efficient chopping tool.
