>>81589551
>location
Mariana trench/surface water middle of the ocean
>characters
Deep sea divers and boat people maybe a token scientist or two. Captain is an old angry black Vietnam vet dude who gives a drunken rambling of seeing the viacong sacrificing soldiers and doing ritual shit.
>plot
Finally have the technology to go deeper than ever before. Typical "why not?" discovery journey.
>monsters
First "monster" has the appearance of a massive boulder swarming with never seem before crabs. Reveals itself as a massive crab/lobster looking lumbering beast that crushes an entire sub.
The massive true monster is never fully shown, but we see it has several mouths on various sides of its head, flaps/fins that can cause tidal waves on the surface, and makes sounds similar to whale noises and icebergs breaking and grinding together. It is awoken when the divers start dropping charges into the trench to free one of their subs that got stuck in a rock slide. The waves it makes flips the topside ship and kills half the crew on board. Half of the movie is about the people floating in the sea catching glimpses of the beast and being taken out by the "small" larvae it spews. Other half focuses on the divers trapped in the trench below in caves and rubble left behind by the beast when it surfaced. Other creatures here include glowing fish covered in razor sharp scales, jellyfish type parasite like things that attach and leech and leave gaping round wounds like a cookie cutter shark, constricting eels, and near the end of the movie the most dangerous enemy: man, as air runs low for the few remaining survivors. Final guy down below (not counting the captain who lives but loses his legs) is swimming to the surface after killing another guy for his tank comes face to face with the massive beast and something happens for a sweet finale.
>style
Stealing what other anon said, only natural lights like flashlights and the glowing creatures. Very dark. No music.
Directed by Sam raimi

>>81592734
>finally have the technology
Who cares; make up some bologna. New type of extremely resilient, but extremely playable metal/element is found and allows for the construction of subs and suits. When they enter the caves there is pockets of air and massive hollow spaces that allow the pressure not to affect them. Heck go full scifi and have the divers be experimented on with some deep sea creature dna that prevents the need for depressurization.
As for casting, the old black war vet has to be Keith David.

These are hardly about Lovecraft, they're "cosmic horror" threads really.

No one's adding in a 'Detective Malone' to their stories and keeping with the literary tradition.

Also, most of his stories are set in typically plain areas that have a noticeably eerie air to them (Shadow over Innsmouth, Music of Erich Zann, Rats in the Walls, etc.) Even At the Mountains of Madness, probably one of his stranger pieces, is a professor recounting his expedition after returning to a civilized world. I think the warmth or familiarity of something as pleasant as the countryside adds to the horror in his work, when its contrasted with something wrong or out-of-place.

If we wanted to be really Lovecraftian, then the story should follow a detective or inquisitive student that follows up on a decade old story of a deep sea exploration. He might notice that it was highly publicized to begin with, but there's little to no mention of what happened afterward and what their findings were. Much of the horror would be delivered through the performance of the sole surviving member of the crew, and what awful effects his memories have on the protagonist who might then be propelled to delve deeper and discover more.

No monsters. That's stupid and just kills all suspension of disbelief. Leave it to the imagination. Focus on the side effects that occur as a result of these monsters. Make it subtle. Explore the metaphysics instead of just cheap attempts at horror.

>Location

American flyover state, closer to the North. Lots of tall pines and rivers. Mining town under the shadow of giant forests, lakes and mountains. Set in the heat of May.

>characters

Two or three historians who come to investigate town. Local astronomer/historian. Some other locals who are actually pretty innocent, no death cult here, but they know more than they let on.

>Plot

Team of historians specialising in Norse history arrive in mining town to research rumours published by local historians about the chance of finding viking remains/iconography to see if the vikings made it that far inland. Local historian/hobby astronomer volunteers to guide them through the woods after meeting them at 9am at a bus stop in front of a diner, in the morning on the day of their arrival. They agree and go, down the mines, thru the woods, etc. Most of movie is spent following the group as they document their research. One of the historians stops at the library out of curiosity and reads an old book about a meteor landing in the area 100 million years ago, but the local astronomer dismisses this (in an almost suspiciously hostile fashion). The historians take trips through the surrounding area to look at the scenery, finding the ruins of a tree with carvings on it in a proto-Norse language, slightly different to regular viking writing (detailing some kind of process that "keeps the land fresh and kind"), markings in the rocks of it being used as a longboat post, etc.

>>
who would be the best director for a lovecraft film today?
>>
>>81597593
As the movie progresses, we realise that something is very wrong, both in terms of subtle, barely noticed differences (the water in the lake seems almost black at times, no birds chirping) to slightly overt, as a character points out a tree they went by on a trip to the forest seems to have been twisted and torn and overgrown, all in a matter of hours. The visiting historians find that there is something wrong with the passage of time as well, as their watches show day when it's night, the sun rises and sets quicker than usual, etc. The astronomer at first seems oblivious, then it's shown that he knows and is prepared for this, e.g. reseting his watch by looking at the stars (or something). He cryptically mentions how in the history book at the library, the book was wrong, and the meteor actually landed 20,000 years ago,"but is much older and bigger than you think", "as his granddad told him".

The characters decide to go back to the town on this last trip, as they are getting worried, but find themselves getting lost as the distance between them and the village seems to increase. The local guide disappears after one of the historians hits him from panic, leaving a cut. One historian panics and tries to swim the lake, thinking he can reach the town that way, but begins thrashing struggling half way through and is pulled into the liquid.

Contd
>>
>>81597631
The two others try and make their way back but one falls down a crag in the ground, the other runs a few meters to find some rope to get him back, comes back and sees just a pile of moss and dirt where his friend was lying, vaguely human shaped. He then runs off, panicked and crying, the camera unmoving as we hear him run into the distance. We are treated to a few shots of the locations they visited, still and unmoving, except like how they were when they first arrived. The camera then cuts to the historian, who is sitting down at a cafe, lacking any signs of his cut or anything like that. He sits and looks at the clock, showing 9am, then the bus stop, and the same people as at the start of the movie come out but no historians. He smiles and leaves the diner, as the camera pans up from the ground to show the town, forest, lakes, mountains, the whole area forming a spherical, island-like shape that slightly juts out the ground like it was placed there. The camera then pans silently to the stars of the sky as the credits play.

>Monsters

None really seen. The location itself is evil, the power in the area stemming from an uncertain but ancient, and not Earth-based source. Something nasty may lurk in the waters of the lake, though. Or it could be the lake itself..

>Style

Slightly surreal, uncomfortable atmosphere, especially for scenes in the woods. Shots of the group walking with only their feet being heard, no birds or anything. The water in the lakes is unusually dark, and the sky often lacks any clouds. Use of contrast between light and dark; lots of shots of characters in light (streetlamp, diner at night) surrounded by pitch black dark. Lots of moments where things are "off", as mentioned. Emphasis on large spaces, vistas of the valleys in the mountains, etc. Lots of imagery of a picturesque American town. The soundtrack, being quite nostalgic sounding indie/alt rock.

w/e, came up with this in a few minutes.

>Deep sea horror

Naw bruh. If you do lovecraft you easily want to make an adaptation of Mountains of Madness.

>Location
Antarctica
>Characters
primarily scientists and explorers. Maybe one or two more adventerous people, but keep it largely homogenous and largely ignorant
>Plot
Discovery of the largest mountain, the investigation of the city, they're driven in by a massive snow storm that also ground the other teams / flights. Then cut between base camp and exploratory team, people getting lost, people getting picked off. Shoot it like a mystery/slasher basically. Possibly found footage?

Anything that fits from the mythos really. I think the setting in antarctica and the lost city is a neat idea, but it doesn't need to actually be the blobs from the story.

Which actually could have been a fun-ish Hills Have Eyes knock off idea if it wasn't executed shittily.

For you.
>>
>>81598306
Honestly, I'm not a big fan of the style, but It seems fitting to an extent.

Who knows.

Maybe the Predator POV stalking shots could be used to try and build tension for monsters without showing them.

If i'm picturing how a Lovecraftian Mountains of Madness movie could be adapted, it inevitably comes out as sort of the first 1/2 AVP and then a second half as a mix between The Descent and The Grey.

You need to have that creepiness and awe from the idea of a civilization in Antarctica, and then you need the claustraphobia and idea of being pursued within this maze-like area.

Its the only Lovecraft story i've read. But i can't imagine there are many that are feasible to make into movies.

>>81589551
>Location
Submarine that's stuck on the ocean floor
>characters
Surly submarine crew, dorky scientists, creepy cook who knows about the occult
>Plot
Strange activity in the Arctic ocean draws the attention of the government. They send a submarine and a team of scientists to investigate. They find a huge crack in the ocean floor that's emitting light and extreme cold. As the sub gets closer it's suicide-
attacked by strange sea creatures and propulsion systems fail, causing it to sink to the ocean floor. The crew starts going crazy one by one and snatching others before disappearing. A handful of them, aided by the cook, try to figure out what's happening, survive, and get the sub moving. But while they're doing that the crazy ones are sacrificing the people they snatched and the crack is getting larger and larger. And as the crack gets larger more and more creatures stream out, going in every direction. Eventually the crack breaks wide open and a massive, fuck huge Eldritch Horror emerges and heads to the surface as the sub tumbles down the hole.
>Monsters
Dark Souls style. Deformed, gangly, creepy. The final monster is like a vaguely humanoid mass of undulating tentacles, eyeballs, mouths, human-sized limbs, diamond and blackness.

Suspense-Horror

Like if Cabin In The Woods was scary and took itself seriously.
