Will Villeneuve be able to do it, /tv/? Can somebody finally make a good adaption of this story?

What about sequels? Is there any way to even adapt God Emperor to the screen?
>>
>>81573155
No. We're going to get a SF action movie with Dune skin.
>>
>>81573223
Idk, Arrival wasnt like that
>>
>>81573155
Dune is the single most overrated piece of literally of the latter 20th century tbqh.
>>
>>81573155
I'm halfway through it. Can't stand Paul and his mother. They do everything right, they got always the answer. Paul is a fucking Mary Sue.
>>
>>81573155
No. If it's true to the books, shit like >>81573740
will leave diehard fans satisfied but normies puzzled. If they cater to the normies, diehard fans won't be pleased and normies don't really want a saga long space opera anyways. All they care about is "le spice must flow" meme.
>>
>>81573740
You gotta see it as the story of the rise of Muad'Dib, told by his followers. I think all those historical entries at the beginning of chapters support this way of reading it. Of course their messiah did everything right and had no flaws.
The bible doesn't have any stories about how other kids didn't wan't to play with jesus because he was an entitled bastard or how he got tricked by a scam artist this one time at the market or some shit like that, either.
Dune: Messiah is about how Paul fucked up.
>>
>>81573740
Spoiler alert, anon: all those angsty pages Paul has about trying to prevent the jihad and the loss of billions of innocent lives?

he doesn't.

I just hope its entertaining. I was bored out of my fucking skull watching Lynch's version.
>>
>>81574316
The Harkonnens were the only good part, even if they were nothing like the book.

https://youtu.be/30WjxhLASCU
>>
>>81573740

Ehhhhhhh

I can justify that, but by doing so, I'd pretty much spoil the entire Dune series

Just accept they are amazing people and keep reading
>>
I trust him more than any director in the past 30 years. The issue with adapting Dune is cutting down its script into something less than 3 hours while still maintaining the essence of the book.
>>
>>81574364
>The issue with adapting Dune is cutting down its script into something less than 3 hours while still maintaining the essence of the book.

Which I still think cannot be done without just turning it into an action movie with Dune flavor sprinkled on top of it. That's why people have been saying forever that TV series is the way to go with Dune.
>>
>>81574520
I've yet to see a TV series, even on Netflix, that actually captures the grandeur a propper adaptation of Dune would need.

Just imagine how shitty HBO's CGI worm would be.

It should be a two-part film, but those seem to be impossible to fund these days.

But besides, you could never make a movie of Messiah after that given its an assassination plot story following a story of literally taking over the universe.
>>
>>81573155
It'll be his first disappointment of a film but will probably have enough atmosphere and vision to find sci fi audience appreciation.

The issue is that it's a movie and not a Netflix mega budget series. Just do what they did with The Expanse, adapt the first book into 10 episodes and throw cash at them, like 10 mill per episode. Cast great actors and pull from the mythology and world building detail so we get something with depth,
>>
Should I read Dune? I read LotR and enjoyed it but otherwise don't really read fantasy/sci-fi stuff.
>>
>>81574988
how have you NOT read dune already? at least read the genre classics.
>>
>>81574988
If you enjoyed LotR I'm sure you'd enjoy Dune. It's very medeival-toned despite being futuristic. Plus it gets criticism for being dry, but LotR is way more dry so you should be good.
>>
>>81574590

>It should be a two-part film, but those seem to be impossible to fund these days.

Nah. It should be a three parter. Stake the entire fucking studio on it and then completely vitalize the entire science fiction genre.
>>
>>81574988
Oh yes.
>>
>>81574344
>>81574252

>>
>>81575472
If you don't like the first half of Dune, you won't like the second, and you'll hate the ending. You should just stop reading. Personal character flaws just aren't an important part of the series, it's much more big-picture.
>>
>>81573483
you haven't read "Dhalgren", have you? heh heh heh
>>
>>81573740

>>81577392

>>
>>81573740
ehh sort of

Paul is a mary sue in character but I think people have unfairly made the assessment that someone who is good at things is automatically a bad character

That's not to say that most of the time definitly that is the case but It's also possible for a character to be really good at everything and also being an interesting character because of their internal conflict about what to do

Paul's good at everything but the whole book all he wants to do is avoid the galatic jihad he can see in his visions and he doesn't so there's that
>>
>>81577583
The usage of Mary Sue as "good at stuff" is absurd anyway. Aside from the fact it's not anywhere near what Mary Sue technically means, you can make the argument nearly every non-underdog protagonist is one.
>>
>>81574590
>two-part film
Hollywood can't do epics anymore?
>>
>>81579736
Nobody is going to fund a 3+ hour long movie these days, especially not the potential start of a series.
>>
>>81573155
The book is incredibly overrated SJW shit.
>>
>>81573155
I trust him completely with the aesthetics and feel of the universe, I'm not so sure whether he'll be able to get the tone right.
>>
>>81574590
>It should be a two-part film

Where would you end the first part?
>>
>>81580996
Good question. Maybe after Paul's 1 on 1 with Jamis
>>
>>81580603
>Anti gay, all-white society
>SJW
Why? Because specifically bred women become the army in the fourth book?
>>
>>81580996
I'd end it with Paul becoming Muad'Dib. The second part would focus on the Battle of Arrakeen and what follows.
>>
I'd hope people would completely give up making a live action Dune.
They should just make high quality animated films.
>>
>>81581948

So much this. Dune made me realize why science fiction will never be accepted as real literature, if autists consider anything in that book to be good writing.

The inconsistent, asshat protagonist, the wildly changing omniscience of the narrator (who switches character perspectives mid-paragraph) and the suspenseless narrative in which 90% of the plot is predicted in the first two chapters (and everything goes exactly according to the fucking prophecy) make dune, in my opinion, the worst "epic" novel I have ever read. I had to force myself to keep reading after the first third, not even because I "just wanted to know what happened" but because I was desperately and incredulously searching for what the fuck people see in that book.

Anime has a bad rep because of moeshit, and modern anime is indeed quite filled with cliches. I recently watched 'A monster calls' and the animted fragments just blew me away. I immediately thought I would kill for a fantasy/sci-fi animated series in that style, and Dune and Silmarillion came to mind. Too bad this kind of animation is probably expensive as hell to make, so anythign longer than 30 minutes is out of the question, especially for a niche IP like some obscure space opera with very 'adult' themes.

The Lynch film is great.

The design is excellent, for the most part it looks stunning apart from a few dodgy SFX shots. Its also a slightly older film than most people seem to remember it as being.

Unusually I even enjoy the exposition from Princess Irulan and "A secret report within the Guild" which seems very cool to me.

The 'weirding module' is a bit silly but I understand what they were trying to do.

It shouldn't be a film though, it should be the obvious successor to GoT.

He stopped drinking and lost a lot of weight. Plus he had the worst acting in Kong. I love the guy, but he might be losing his edge.

I'd say russell crowe might be a good fit. Maybe a fat Val Kilmer?
>>
>>81600070
What? He had the best acting in Kong and bounced of Samuel L Jackson and the black kid very well. That scene with him and the senator was great. If anything he was severely under utilized and had a terrible meaningless death much like Brian cranston in godzilla.

He's one of the best picks to play The Baron out side of Brian Cox or Brendan Gleeson

If there was ever a trailer that didn't have to show the biggest baddest critter, it's a Dune trailer. Just show the sand shifting as something huge is burrowing under it. Nearly everyone knows what it is already anyway. Keep the spoilers down and the teasing high.
>>
>>81599292
Can he be a egotistical cunt?
>>81600070
I was thinking Kilmer too, but how intimidating can he be?

Baron is supposed to be morbidly obese. They'll have to do some effects anyway if they want him to look like the books described. He couldn't even walk easily. I don't know how important it is to have an actor who is fat to begin with, though I would think it would make it easier to create convincing effects.

Based on what we've seen in Enemy and Arrival, and depending on how successful Blade Runner 2049 is, I'm pretty optimistic.

>was Alejandro Jodorowsky's 14-hour Dune going to be the definitive version?

no. it was going to be another Jodo shamanic shitfest with vision quests, castrated parents, people shitting on things and a deliberately ambiguous ending so people would talk about it afterwards.

jodo just wanted the fame that the book had gained by being a great book. he didn't want to make a film of Dune. he just wanted attention.

nnnnnnnnno it doesn't. the sketches were rudimentary and the book itself was mostly jodo's masturbating.

poor Jean Giraud seems to have had a history of being taken in by fast-talking bullshit artist shamans.

he didn't even draw this.

I really wanted to see a Refn version of Dune. I think he could perform his autism magic on it and Elle could play the princess.
I could see that kid that played Ender / Hugo as Paul Attredies, Goose as Duncan. He would fit Titcow in there somewhere, somehow.

Not sure why but I feel he would be able to capture the atmosphere while making it beautiful to look at in every shot.

Reverend Mother Bellonda, from the last two books. she was said to be a little on the chubby side, but she was a Reverend Mother, so she'd've been hot chubby.

Dune is a glib facsimile of 40k anyway.

This is what I want for The Wheel of Time series. Theres no way it could be made properly with live action because its 14 books taking place over 2 years, and all the actors would age so much. Animating it would also make all the channeling the one power look just as good as its surroundings and not rely on expensive CGI.

They need to stop mixing 2D and 3D because that's what leads to slideshow presentations. I fear, you can'0t do CG in 60FPS if your 2D assets can't follow.

He's right though. Dune, originally, might not have copied 40k. But the shit not written by Herbert is spitting on Dune and is basically copying what 40k did.

the shit not written by Herbert is not Dune, in my opinion. i agree with Zack Parsons on this:

Even if you have never read a Dune book, the plot synopsis of the latest Dune novel written by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson should be enough to get your blood boiling:

Sandworms picks up where Hunters left off: The no-ship Ithaca is still searching for a new homeworld for the Jews and Bene Gesserit, while Duncan evades the tachyon net of the old couple, now known to be Omnius and Erasmus. In the Old Empire, Murbella attempts to rally human kind for a last stand against the Thinking Machines. The New Face Dancers continue to infiltrate the main organizations of the Old Empire at all levels, having also sent the gholas of the Baron Harkonnen and young Paolo Atreides to Omnius' capital, Synchrony.

Brian Herbert has not just tarnished his father's legacy, he has ridden atop a burning money train straight down the gullet of his father's dessicated corpse, exploding it in a shower of creepy sex scenes and lame multi-page descriptions of giant robots fighting. Burn in hell forever, Brian Herbert. I hope you slip and fall in that new bathroom.

>>81604990
Exactly. 40k is played for satire in it's silliness (though he's toned it down a lot, sadly) and you can just have a laugh if shit doesn't make sense. But the new Dune content? It's like a completely different setting. Like somebody saw Dune, saw 40k + Gundam + Sci-Fi Shows and then went "Let's remove what make these great" and then slap it together because "lol". 40k took a lot of stuff from Dune and twisted it to fit in with Star Wars, Star Trek, Starship Troopers and loads of other shit like Stargate, which all worked together somehow. But Dune? It's like somebody wrote a fanfiction. Or copied Dune, but didn't twist it enough to be it's own thing but twisted it too much it was no longer Dune.

It's guaranteed to be shit, as this is now standard operating procedure in Hollywood when it comes to "adapting" novels (see; GoT, et al).

The Metabarons is the absolute best to come out of the Incal universe, if there's ever a faithful adaptation of the whole family I could finally die happy.

The Technopriests sucked btw

I don't know. GoT was doing alright in the first two seasons. I think the realization they would have to go off on their own in the future fucked over the writing. What they adapted faithfully was good.

I dont really mind that, since the dangers of AI is a known theme

but now I remembered, my problem was that the last books kinda focused on the butlerian jihad shit which i could really give a fuck about since its a prequel series I didnt read
>>
>>81608553
Problem was that he really simplified the theme that was present in the original book and Herbert purposefully kept vague because hey, it's been thousands of years of A) history and B) control. There was no way what actually happened for real, but social impact was definitely felt.
