In first grade we had a full retard kid in our class but everybody liked him. Kids are easy to get along with. And when I say "full retard" I mean full retard. Wheelchair. Yelling some watchword repeatedly - I can't even remember it anymore, some kind of food I think. Wildly flailing arms. The works. Later on, I would grow to be disconcerted by the mentally handicapped as I aged and matured. I don't want to be near them and certainly not to let them touch me, if I am being totally honest.

I think that it is easier for children to look past unusual behavior and see a human. Or at least, it was that way for me.

We had a retard in my school, year below me. Or grade I guess if you're yanks. Anyway, this guy had a tard wrangler and she often disappeared or had to deal with other shit. He used to regularly attack us and then if we defended ourselves, run off to tard wrangler and hug her and go "DEY WERE BEING HOWWIBLE TO MEH :((". Anyway one day tard wrangler attacked us super hard, spitting on us, kicking us, biting us, scratching us and we had enough and went and told the tard wrangler. He did his usual bollocks. Thought that was end of it.

Then when we go to class, we (my group and I) get called outside to talk about how we're not to do anything to the poor defenceless retard. Despite us telling them we didn't do shit, they believe tard wrangler and tard.

tl;dr special ed kids in the mid 90's were considered untouchable; now they're basically their own little Gods.
