This shit was 1991. Good director makes all the difference
>>
>>81531620
A good director can't magically make cgi good if the tech isn't there. The tech in 1991 was shit compared to just a few years later. That's how quick the animation industry adapts and changes.
>>

>A good director can't magically make cgi good if the tech isn't there

>>

Oh, were you? I guess. I don't think those graphics really hold up though, it has a "tech demo windows 98" vibe now.

>>
>>81531854
that looks fine. It's a wideshot from far away, the detail doesn't have to be there. I assume that was one of the rushed Weta scenes.
>>
>>81531810
No, I feel like that's exactly what he did. I was more hung up on the "good director can't magically make cgi good if the tech isn't there" followed by an example of someone who did it.

I misunderstood, you mean James Cameron literally made that film with magic. I agree.
>>
>>81531918
So, you are going to be a cheeky cunt then? Cool. I never gave an example of "someone who did it", I was saying that it really doesn't look that amazing but he did what he could with the tech that he did.
>>
>>81532012
No, not being a cunt at all. Just praising James Cameron. It's crazy what he did with the tech at the time. Dude is literally a wizard is what I'm saying.

I find the world too sterile, the pace too slow without any tension or buildup to make up for it (Das Boot is one of my favourite films, so it's not an ADD thing) far too much use of CGI which is a massive disappointment from the man that gave us Bad Taste and Braindead..

To make a film like that, as SLOW as that and capture a kids attention is a feat

They put some fun stuff for the kiddies in there but played it pretty straight with intense heavy themes going on

He wasn't rushed, he didn't want to do it. So The Hobbit was a complex copyright battle with the Tolkien estate and New Line Cinema, with Peter wanting little involvement. But New Line shat themselves when it finally gor greenlit and Toro left the mess so Peter had to come in and fix it.

That just makes me wonder how they got away with stuff like the Orcs throwing a bunch of severed heads over the walls or that split second shot of an Uruk crushing an orcs head with a boulder in Cirith Ungol

>So why was he made to rush The Hobbit?
The problem of the Hobbit is that turned two movies worth of content into a trilogy. The first and second movies are rather padded while the last one has pretty much no narrative value whatsoever and is just stretching some thin plotlines to tie over 3 hours. The Hobbit shouldn't have run for more than 5 hours.

TPM is probably the least terrible of the prequel trilogy, AotC being absolutely terrible and RofS being mere fanservice floating on an ocean of feces. Smaug is definitely the strongest entry in the Hobbit Trilogy.

The Pelennor Fields are supposed to be farmlands, but in the movie they're grassy plains. It's not a big deal, but it tickles my autism because it makes me wonder how they get enough food to sustain the population of Minas Tirith. Plus, it would have been great to see the orcs burning down houses and crops, salting the fields, digging up trenches, and generally destroying and pilfering the area surrounding Minas Tirith like they do in the books.

>it makes me wonder how they get enough food to sustain the population of Minas Tirith
I kept wondering how any army was sustainable, in particular Sauron's gigantic armies of orcs living in a barren wasteland.

Mordor actually has farmlands and the charred "blackening" of the region was a fairly recent thing.

Actual Men lived in there too.

Before you shit on the hobbit, understand that given that he had less than a month of pre-production time before shooting, he did fucking amazing.

Most movies take about 6 months to a year and a half pre-production wise (lotr took 3) and he managed to yolo it in less than a month, and thats having to film 3 movies back to back.

Give fucking credit where credit is due.
>>
>>81537922
This.

First movie isn't even that bad. If bad at all.
>>
>>81537922
It's almost universally acknowledged here the studio was to blame not Peter
I have nothing bad to say about the man
>>
>>81537922
I genuinely believe that the Hobbit would have turned quite nice had they kept it to only two movies.

Its not even the number of movies, but the lack PP time.
Things that happen in pre-production is
>Scouting
>Armor design
>Monster design
>Getting with the prop masters and seeing what you can do practically
>Actual wardrobe
>Lifecasting for props
>storyboards
>pacing of the movie
>controlled re-writes
>build sets

And when deltaco backed out due to studio interference pissing him off, jackson had to throw everything away and start fresh because deltoro and him have vastly different designs and visions. It would be like asking spielberg to film a Tarantino movie with all thing Tarantino. It wouldnt turn out right, and thats why he had 1 month prep time.

Imagine, even with 3 movies, what it would have looked like had he been given the 3 years deltoro had.
